1Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.

1Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.

2The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.

2And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;

3“Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.

3and they began to come up to Him and say, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and to give Him slaps in the face.

4Pilate went outside again and said to the people, “I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty.”

4Pilate came out again and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him."

5Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, “Look, here is the man!”

5Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold, the Man!"

6When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.”

6So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him."

7The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”

7The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God."

8When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.

8Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;

9He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer.

9and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

10“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”

10So Pilate said to Him, "You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?"

11Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”

11Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."

12Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”

12As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, "If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar."

13When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha ).

13Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!”

14Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!"

15“Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!” “What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.

15So they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."

16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. The Crucifixion So they took Jesus away.

16So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.

17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha ).

17They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.

18There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.

18There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.

19And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”

19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS."

20The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.

20Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.

21Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, “Change it from ‘The King of the Jews’ to ‘He said, I am King of the Jews.’”

21So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews'; but that He said, 'I am King of the Jews.'"

22Pilate replied, “No, what I have written, I have written.”

22Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.

24So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.

24So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS."

25Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.

25Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.”

26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"

27And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. The Death of Jesus

27Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.

28Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty."

29A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.

29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

30When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

31It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.

31Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.

32So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him;

33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs.

33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

34One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.

34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe. )

35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.

36These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of his bones will be broken,”

36For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."

37and “They will look on the one they pierced.” The Burial of Jesus

37And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."

38Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.

38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.

39With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.

39Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.

40Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.

40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

41The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.

41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

42And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

42Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
