1 Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan— those in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)— As soon as all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, And it came to pass, when all the kings which <i>were</i> on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard <i>thereof</i>; Now it came about when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, the lowland, and on all the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard about it, Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)—
2 they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel. they gathered together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel. That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. that they met together with one purpose, to fight with Joshua and with Israel. they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
3 But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, The inhabitants of Gibeon also heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4 acted deceptively and set out as envoys, carrying on their donkeys worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. they on their part acted with cunning and went and made ready provisions and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; but they on their part acted craftily and went and took provisions for a journey, and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins <i>that were</i> worn out, split open, and patched, they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.
5 They put worn, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies, and their whole supply of bread was dry and moldy. with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes. And all their provisions were dry and crumbly. And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry <i>and</i> mouldy. and worn-out and patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry <i>and</i> had become crumbled. They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.
6 They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.” And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us.” And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. And they went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now then, make a covenant with us.” Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.”
7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?” But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?” And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you are living within our land; how then are we to make a covenant with you?” The Israelites said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?”
8 “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?” They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you? And where do you come from?” And they said unto Joshua, We <i>are</i> thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who <i>are</i> ye? and from whence come ye? So they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Then Joshua said to them, “Who are you and where do you come from?” “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?”
9 “Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt, They said to him, “From a very distant country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God. For we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God; for we have heard the report about Him and all that He did in Egypt, They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,
10 and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan— Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth. And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that <i>were</i> beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which <i>was</i> at Ashtaroth. and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan who was in Ashtaroth. and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.
11 So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’ So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, ‘Take provisions in your hand for the journey and go to meet them and say to them, “We are your servants. Come now, make a covenant with us.”’ Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We <i>are</i> your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; now then, make a covenant with us.”’ And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.|’
12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and moldy. Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly. This our bread we took hot <i>for</i> our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: This bread of ours <i>was</i> hot <i>when</i> we took it for our provisions from our houses on the day that we left to come to you; but now behold, it is dry and has become crumbled. This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.” These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst. And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.” And these bottles of wine, which we filled, <i>were</i> new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. And these wineskins which we filled were new, and behold, they are split open; and these clothes of ours and our sandals are worn out from the very long journey.” And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.”
14 Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions, but did not seek the counsel of the LORD. So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD. And the men took of their victuals, and asked not <i>counsel</i> at the mouth of the LORD. So the men <i>of Israel</i> took some of their provisions, and did not ask for the counsel of the LORD. The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.
15 And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them. And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore <i>an oath</i> to them. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16 Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them. At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they lived among them. And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they <i>were</i> their neighbours, and <i>that</i> they dwelt among them. However, it came about at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were neighbors and that they were living within their land. Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.
17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day arrived at their cities— Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities <i>were</i> Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. Then the sons of Israel set out and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities <i>were</i> Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.
18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders. But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. But the sons of Israel did not attack them because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders. But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,
19 All the leaders answered, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them. But all the leaders said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. But all the leaders said to the whole congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them. but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.
20 This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them.” This we will do to them: let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath that we swore to them.” This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. This we will do to them, even let them live, so that wrath will not be on us because of the oath which we swore to them.” This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.”
21 They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise. And the leaders said to them, “Let them live.” So they became cutters of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said of them. And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. So the leaders said to them, “Let them live.” And they became gatherers of firewood and labor to draw water for the whole congregation, just as the leaders had spoken to them. They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.
22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us? Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us? And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We <i>are</i> very far from you; when ye dwell among us? Then Joshua called for them and spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you are living within our land? Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us?
23 Now therefore you are under a curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.” Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything but servants, cutters of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.” Now therefore ye <i>are</i> cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. Now therefore, you are cursed, and you will never cease to be slaves, both gatherers of firewood and labor to draw water for the house of my God.” You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24 The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this. They answered Joshua, “Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you—so we feared greatly for our lives because of you and did this thing. And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. So they answered Joshua and said, “Since your servants were fully informed that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you, we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing. They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.
25 Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.” And now, behold, we are in your hand. Whatever seems good and right in your sight to do to us, do it.” And now, behold, we <i>are</i> in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. And now behold, we are in your hands; do to us as it seems good and right in your sight to do.” We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
26 So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites. So he did this to them and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel, and they did not kill them. And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. This he did to them, and saved them from the hands of the sons of Israel, and they did not kill them. So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.
27 On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose. But Joshua made them that day cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place that he should choose. And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose. But on that day Joshua made them gatherers of firewood and labor to draw water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place which He would choose. That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.
