Exodus 31
Berean Study Bible

Bezalel and Oholiab

Then the LORD

God continued to direct Israel’s worship, leadership, and national life from His covenant presence among them. The LORD who delivered Israel from Egypt now gave Moses detailed instructions for carrying out the work of the tabernacle.

Bezalel

Bezalel, whose name means “in the shadow of God,” was chosen to oversee the skilled craftsmanship required for the sanctuary and its sacred furnishings. His work served the worship of God and the visible testimony of God’s presence among Israel.

Moreover, I have selected Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, as his assistant.

God appointed Oholiab to work alongside Bezalel in building the Tabernacle. Though Dan was not among Israel’s leading tribes, God chose a man from Dan for this central task, showing that service in His work depended on His calling rather than tribal prominence. Oholiab’s name, meaning “Father’s tent,” aptly suits his role in preparing the sanctuary where God would dwell among Israel.

the Tent of Meeting,

The Tent of Meeting was Israel’s portable sanctuary in the wilderness, built according to the pattern God gave Moses on Mount Sinai. It marked the place where God met with His people and where the priests carried out the worship He commanded. Its order, holiness, and materials reflected the reality that the Lord dwelt among Israel while remaining distinct from sin.

the ark of the Testimony

The Ark of the Testimony stood in the Most Holy Place and contained the tablets of the covenant. As the holiest object in the sanctuary, it represented God’s covenant rule over Israel and His presence in their midst. It was to be handled only as God directed and was carried before the people at significant moments in their journey.

and the mercy seat upon it,

The mercy seat was the gold covering placed over the Ark, beneath the cherubim. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest sprinkled sacrificial blood there to make atonement for the sins of the nation. It showed that forgiveness required a substitute and that access to God depended on His provision of mercy.

and all the other furnishings of the tent—

These included the table for the bread of the Presence, representing God’s provision, the golden lampstand, symbolizing His light, the altar of incense, signifying the prayers of the saints, and the instruments used in priestly service. Each was made for the ordered worship of God and supplied the needs of the sanctuary ministry. Together they demonstrated that Israel’s worship was governed by God’s instruction rather than human invention.

the table with its utensils,

The Table of Showbread stood in the Holy Place and held twelve loaves set before the Lord as a continual memorial of Israel’s covenant fellowship with Him. Its continual light testified to God’s holy presence among His people.

in addition to the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place.

The holy anointing oil set apart the priests, the Tabernacle, and its furnishings for service to the Lord. The fragrant incense was burned regularly before God in the Holy Place, marking the sanctuary as a place of consecrated worship. Both were prepared according to God’s prescribed formula and reserved exclusively for sacred use.

Bezalel, Oholiab, and the skilled workers were responsible to complete every sacred item exactly as God directed Moses. Their work required careful obedience because the Tabernacle and its furnishings were made to reflect God’s holiness and to provide the appointed means by which Israel could approach Him.

The Sign of the Sabbath

And the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to give Moses instructions for Israel at Sinai, establishing the order by which the nation would worship and live as His covenant people. Moses received these commands as God’s appointed mediator, faithfully conveying the Lord’s will to the Israelites.

Exo 24:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain…
Exo 33:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Leave this place”…
Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets…

God addresses the covenant nation descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The command is given to Israel as a people, not merely to isolated individuals.

Lev 1:2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you”…

Israel was to observe the weekly Sabbath as God had commanded, resting from ordinary labor on the seventh day. Its observance was an essential duty within their covenant life.

Lev 26:2 You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary.…
Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…

for this will be a sign between Me and you

The Sabbath publicly marked Israel as belonging to the LORD. By resting according to His command, they acknowledged His authority as Creator and Redeemer.

Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…
Ezk 20:20 Keep My Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign…
Gen 17:11 You are to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin,…

for the generations to come,

Every generation of Israel was responsible to preserve this covenant sign, teaching it within their households and ordering their national life around God’s command.

Exo 12:14 And this day will be a memorial for you,…
Lev 23:14 You must not eat any bread or roasted or new grain…
Lev 23:31 You are not to do any work at all. This is a permanent statute…

so that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

Sabbath observance reminded Israel that the LORD had set them apart for Himself. Their holiness rested on His covenant faithfulness, ultimately pointing to the complete rest Christ provides for His people.

Lev 20:8 And you shall keep My statutes and practice them.…
Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Lev 21:8 You are to regard him as holy, since he presents the food…

Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you.

The Sabbath commemorated God’s rest after creation and marked Israel as the people set apart by His covenant. By ceasing from ordinary labor, Israel acknowledged God as Creator, trusted His provision, and devoted the day to worship and renewal. It also recalled the Lord’s deliverance of Israel from slavery, when they had no rest under Pharaoh. The Sabbath anticipated the lasting rest secured through Christ.

Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Deu 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Isa 58:13-14 If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath,…

Anyone who profanes it must surely be put to death.

Treating the Sabbath as an ordinary day, profaning it by treating it as common, rejected a covenant sign established by God. The prescribed penalty showed that deliberate disobedience was not a private matter but an assault on Israel’s holiness and obedience as God’s covenant people. Israel’s civil law guarded the sanctity of worship and life under God’s rule.

Num 15:32-36 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found…
Exo 35:2 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…

Whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from among his people.

Sabbath labor violated the command to cease from regular work and rely on God’s provision. Being cut off meant removal from the covenant community and, in cases of defiant violation, could include judicial execution. Under the new covenant, believers are not bound to Israel’s Sabbath penalties, yet Christ fulfills the Sabbath’s purpose and gives rest to those who belong to Him.

Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Lev 23:29-30 If anyone does not humble himself on this day,…

For six days work may be done,

God established a regular rhythm of labor for Israel, reflecting His order in creation. Work was good and necessary, but it was not to govern every day of life.

Exo 23:12 For six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day…
Exo 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Deu 5:13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest,

The seventh day required a full cessation from ordinary labor. Israel’s rest expressed trust in God’s provision and distinguished the nation from surrounding peoples.

Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God,…
Lev 23:3 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…
Gen 2:2-3 And by the seventh day God had finished the work;…

holy to the LORD.

The Sabbath belonged especially to God. It was set apart for worship, remembrance of His covenant, and renewed devotion to Him.

Deu 5:12 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Jer 17:22 You must not carry a load out of your houses…
Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…

Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must surely be put to death.

Because the Sabbath was a covenant sign between God and Israel, deliberate violation was treated as rebellion against God’s authority. The penalty demonstrated the seriousness of holiness and obedience within the covenant community.

Exo 35:2 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…
Num 15:32-36 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found…

The Israelites must keep the Sabbath,

God commanded Israel to observe the Sabbath as part of their covenant relationship with Him. Following the pattern established at creation, Israel was to cease from ordinary labor on the seventh day and recognize the Lord as Creator, Deliverer, and Provider.

Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Deu 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Isa 56:2 Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man…

celebrating it as a permanent covenant

Sabbath observance marked Israel as God’s covenant people. It was a continuing obligation, reminding each generation that the nation belonged to the Lord who had redeemed them from slavery in Egypt.

Isa 56:4-6 For this is what the LORD says: “To the eunuchs…
Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…
Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them…

for the generations to come.

Parents and leaders were responsible to preserve this command among their descendants. The weekly Sabbath maintained Israel’s distinct identity and kept God’s covenant purposes before the people throughout their history.

Exo 12:17 So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,…
Lev 23:14 You must not eat any bread or roasted or new grain…
Num 15:15-16 The assembly is to have the same statute both for you…

It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever;

The Sabbath marked Israel as the covenant people of the LORD. Its weekly observance distinguished them from surrounding nations and continually reminded them that they belonged to the God who had redeemed and set them apart.

Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…
Ezk 20:20 Keep My Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign…
Isa 56:6 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD…

for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,

Israel’s Sabbath rested on the historical reality of God’s creation of all things in six days. The pattern of work followed by rest came from the Creator Himself and established the rhythm God appointed for His people.

Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,…

but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”

God ceased from His completed work, not because He lacked strength, but because creation was finished and perfect. Israel was therefore to cease from ordinary labor on the Sabbath, Shabbat meaning “to cease or desist,” honoring the LORD as Creator and remembering their covenant relationship with Him.

God concluded the instructions given to Moses during his time on the mountain, where He established Israel’s covenant obligations and provided direction for worship, priesthood, and the tabernacle. Moses stood before God as Israel’s appointed mediator.
