Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the nations
This phrase calls for universal worship, emphasizing that all families and nations are to recognize the sovereignty of the LORD. The term "ascribe" suggests acknowledging or attributing certain qualities to God. In the ancient Near Eastern context, families and tribes often had their own deities, but this verse calls for a unified recognition of the LORD's supremacy. This reflects the Abrahamic promise in Genesis 12:3, where all families of the earth are to be blessed through Abraham's lineage, pointing to the inclusivity of God's plan. The call to the "families of the nations" also foreshadows the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands His disciples to make disciples of all nations.

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength
The repetition of "ascribe" emphasizes the importance of recognizing God's attributes. "Glory" refers to the weightiness and majesty of God, often associated with His presence, as seen in Exodus 24:16-17 during the giving of the Law. "Strength" highlights God's power and might, which is evident throughout the biblical narrative, from creation in Genesis to the deliverance of Israel in Exodus. This call to ascribe glory and strength is a reminder of God's unmatched power and majesty, contrasting with the impotence of idols, as seen in Isaiah 44:9-20. It also points to the ultimate revelation of God's glory and strength in Jesus Christ, who is described in Hebrews 1:3 as the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The LORD (Yahweh)
The central figure in this verse, Yahweh is the covenant name of God, emphasizing His eternal, self-existent nature and His relationship with His people.

2. Families of the Nations
This phrase refers to all the peoples and ethnic groups of the world, highlighting the universal call to worship and honor God.

3. The Psalmist
Traditionally attributed to David, the psalmist is the inspired author calling for global recognition of God's majesty.
Teaching Points
Universal Call to Worship
The verse emphasizes that worship is not limited to Israel but extends to all nations. Every family and ethnic group is invited to recognize God's glory and strength.

Recognition of God's Attributes
"Glory" and "strength" are attributes of God that we are called to acknowledge. This recognition should lead to a life of worship and reverence.

Active Participation in Worship
The repeated use of "ascribe" suggests an active role in worship. We are not passive observers but active participants in declaring God's greatness.

Unity in Diversity
The call to the "families of the nations" highlights the unity that can be found in diverse groups coming together to worship the one true God.

Reflecting God's Glory
As believers, we are called to reflect God's glory in our lives, demonstrating His strength and majesty through our actions and words.(7-9) These verses are a relic of Psalm 29:1-2, where see Notes, but instead of being addressed to the angels it is, in accordance with the world of new ideas and feelings in which Israel lived after the Captivity, addressed to all the people of the world. A truly Messianic character is thus impressed on the psalm.

Verse 7. - Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people; rather, O ye fatuities of the peoples. A renewed appeal to the heathen to join in the song of praise (comp. ver. 1). Give unto the Lord glory and strength. "Give" must be understood in the sense of "ascribe" (see Professor Cheyne's translation, and compare the Prayer book Version). Both this and the next verse are echoes of Psalm 29:1, 2.
