1On the first day of the second month of the second year after [the Israelites] had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He told him, 1וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֛ה בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר סִינַ֖י בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד בְּאֶחָד֩ לַחֹ֨דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֜י בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשֵּׁנִ֗ית לְצֵאתָ֛ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם לֵאמֹֽר׃
2“Take a census of the entire congregation of the sons of Israel by their clans and families, listing the name of every man, one by one. 2שְׂא֗וּ אֶת־ רֹאשׁ֙ כָּל־ עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֔וֹת כָּל־ זָכָ֖ר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃
3You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions— everyone who can serve in Israel’s army. 3מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כָּל־ יֹצֵ֥א צָבָ֖א בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל תִּפְקְד֥וּ אֹתָ֛ם לְצִבְאֹתָ֖ם אַתָּ֥ה וְאַהֲרֹֽן׃
4And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you. 4וְאִתְּכֶ֣ם יִהְי֔וּ אִ֥ישׁ אִ֖ישׁ לַמַּטֶּ֑ה אִ֛ישׁ רֹ֥אשׁ לְבֵית־ אֲבֹתָ֖יו הֽוּא׃
5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From [the tribe of] Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; 5וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ שְׁמ֣וֹת הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַֽעַמְד֖וּ אִתְּכֶ֑ם לִרְאוּבֵ֕ן אֱלִיצ֖וּר בֶּן־ שְׁדֵיאֽוּר׃
6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; 6לְשִׁמְע֕וֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ צוּרִֽישַׁדָּֽי׃
7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; 7לִֽיהוּדָ֕ה נַחְשׁ֖וֹן בֶּן־ עַמִּינָדָֽב׃
8from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; 8לְיִ֨שָּׂשכָ֔ר נְתַנְאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ צוּעָֽר׃
9from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; 9לִזְבוּלֻ֕ן אֱלִיאָ֖ב בֶּן־ חֵלֹֽן׃
10from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; 10לִבְנֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף לְאֶפְרַ֕יִם אֱלִישָׁמָ֖ע בֶּן־ עַמִּיה֑וּד לִמְנַשֶּׁ֕ה גַּמְלִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ פְּדָהצֽוּר׃
11from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; 11לְבִ֨נְיָמִ֔ן אֲבִידָ֖ן בֶּן־ גִּדְעֹנִֽי׃
12from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; 12לְדָ֕ן אֲחִיעֶ֖זֶר בֶּן־ עַמִּֽישַׁדָּֽי׃
13from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; 13לְאָשֵׁ֕ר פַּגְעִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ עָכְרָֽן׃
14from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; 14לְגָ֕ד אֶלְיָסָ֖ף בֶּן־ דְּעוּאֵֽל׃
15[and] from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.” 15לְנַ֨פְתָּלִ֔י אֲחִירַ֖ע בֶּן־ עֵינָֽן׃
16These men were appointed from the congregation; they [were] the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel. 16אֵ֚לֶּה [קריאי] (קְרוּאֵ֣י) הָעֵדָ֔ה נְשִׂיאֵ֖י מַטּ֣וֹת אֲבוֹתָ֑ם רָאשֵׁ֛י אַלְפֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵֽם׃
17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 17וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן אֵ֚ת הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִקְּב֖וּ בְּשֵׁמֽוֹת׃
18and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older, 18וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־ הָעֵדָ֜ה הִקְהִ֗ילוּ בְּאֶחָד֙ לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י וַיִּתְיַֽלְד֥וּ עַל־ מִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֗וֹת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֛ה וָמַ֖עְלָה לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃
19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So [Moses] numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai: 19כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖ם בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר סִינָֽי׃ פ
20From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older, everyone who could serve in the army, 20וַיִּהְי֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ רְאוּבֵן֙ בְּכֹ֣ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר שֵׁמוֹת֙ לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם כָּל־ זָכָ֗ר מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
21those registered to the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500. 21פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֑ן שִׁשָּׁ֧ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
22From the sons of Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 22לִבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֔וֹן תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם פְּקֻדָ֗יו בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר שֵׁמוֹת֙ לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם כָּל־ זָכָ֗ר מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
23those registered to the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300. 23פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה שִׁמְע֑וֹן תִּשְׁעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
24From the sons of Gad, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 24לִבְנֵ֣י גָ֔ד תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֗וֹת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
25those registered to the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650. 25פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה גָ֑ד חֲמִשָּׁ֤ה וְאַרְבָּעִים֙ אֶ֔לֶף וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ פ
26From the sons of Judah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 26לִבְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
27those registered to the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600. 27פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה יְהוּדָ֑ה אַרְבָּעָ֧ה וְשִׁבְעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
28From the sons of Issachar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 28לִבְנֵ֣י יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
29those registered to the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400. 29פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֑ר אַרְבָּעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
30From the sons of Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 30לִבְנֵ֣י זְבוּלֻ֔ן תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
31those registered to the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400. 31פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֑ן שִׁבְעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
32From the sons of Joseph: From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 32לִבְנֵ֤י יוֹסֵף֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
33those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500. 33פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה אֶפְרָ֑יִם אַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
34And from the sons of Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 34לִבְנֵ֣י מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֗וֹת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
35those registered to the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200. 35פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה שְׁנַ֧יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּמָאתָֽיִם׃ פ
36From the sons of Benjamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 36לִבְנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
37those registered to the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400. 37פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֑ן חֲמִשָּׁ֧ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
38From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 38לִבְנֵ֣י דָ֔ן תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
39those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700. 39פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה דָ֑ן שְׁנַ֧יִם וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁבַ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
40From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 40לִבְנֵ֣י אָשֵׁ֔ר תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
41those registered to the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500. 41פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֑ר אֶחָ֧ד וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
42From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 42בְּנֵ֣י נַפְתָּלִ֔י תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמֹ֗ת מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כֹּ֖ל יֹצֵ֥א צָבָֽא׃
43those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400. 43פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה נַפְתָּלִ֑י שְׁלֹשָׁ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃ פ
44These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel; each one representing his family. 44אֵ֣לֶּה הַפְּקֻדִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ פָּקַ֨ד מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאַהֲרֹן֙ וּנְשִׂיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר אִ֑ישׁ אִישׁ־ אֶחָ֥ד לְבֵית־ אֲבֹתָ֖יו הָיֽוּ׃
45So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were registered according to their families. 45וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ כָּל־ פְּקוּדֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כָּל־ יֹצֵ֥א צָבָ֖א בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
46And the total of those registered numbered 603,550. 46וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ כָּל־ הַפְּקֻדִ֔ים שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֑ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃
47The Levites, however, were not registered with the tribe of their fathers. 47וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה אֲבֹתָ֑ם לֹ֥א הָתְפָּקְד֖וּ בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ פ
48For the LORD had said to Moses: 48וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃
49“Do not register the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites. 49אַ֣ךְ אֶת־ מַטֵּ֤ה לֵוִי֙ לֹ֣א תִפְקֹ֔ד וְאֶת־ רֹאשָׁ֖ם לֹ֣א תִשָּׂ֑א בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
50Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it. 50וְאַתָּ֡ה הַפְקֵ֣ד אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּם֩ עַל־ מִשְׁכַּ֨ן הָעֵדֻ֜ת וְעַ֣ל כָּל־ כֵּלָיו֮ וְעַ֣ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ לוֹ֒ הֵ֜מָּה יִשְׂא֤וּ אֶת־ הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ כֵּלָ֔יו וְהֵ֖ם יְשָׁרְתֻ֑הוּ וְסָבִ֥יב לַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן יַחֲנֽוּ׃
51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death. 51וּבִנְסֹ֣עַ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן יוֹרִ֤ידוּ אֹתוֹ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וּבַחֲנֹת֙ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן יָקִ֥ימוּ אֹת֖וֹ הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וְהַזָּ֥ר הַקָּרֵ֖ב יוּמָֽת׃
52The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own [family] banner. 52וְחָנ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִ֧ישׁ עַֽל־ מַחֲנֵ֛הוּ וְאִ֥ישׁ עַל־ דִּגְל֖וֹ לְצִבְאֹתָֽם׃
53But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath shall fall on the Israelite congregation. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.” 53וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם יַחֲנ֤וּ סָבִיב֙ לְמִשְׁכַּ֣ן הָעֵדֻ֔ת וְלֹֽא־ יִהְיֶ֣ה קֶ֔צֶף עַל־ עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשָׁמְרוּ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶת־ מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת מִשְׁכַּ֥ן הָעֵדֽוּת׃
54Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 54וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ מֹשֶׁ֖ה כֵּ֥ן עָשֽׂוּ׃ פ
