Definition and General Understanding:
Consent, in a biblical context, refers to the act of agreeing or giving permission for something to happen. It involves a voluntary and deliberate decision to accept or approve a particular action or proposal. In the Scriptures, consent is often associated with moral and ethical decisions, reflecting one's alignment with God's will and commandments.

Biblical References and Examples:

1. Parental Consent:
In the Old Testament, the concept of consent is evident in the context of family and marriage. For instance, in Genesis 24:57-58, when Rebekah is asked if she will go with Abraham's servant to marry Isaac, she consents, saying, "I will go." This illustrates the importance of personal agreement in significant life decisions.

2. Consent in Leadership and Governance:
The Bible also addresses the idea of consent in the context of leadership and governance. In 1 Samuel 8:19-22, the Israelites demand a king to rule over them, and despite God's warning through Samuel, they consent to this request. This passage highlights the collective consent of the people in choosing their form of governance, even when it diverges from divine guidance.

3. Moral and Ethical Consent:
Consent is crucial in moral and ethical decisions, as seen in the account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11. They conspired together to deceive the apostles about the proceeds from the sale of their property. Their mutual consent to lie resulted in severe consequences, underscoring the importance of integrity and honesty in one's agreements.

4. Consent and Obedience to God:
The Bible emphasizes the necessity of consenting to God's will. In Isaiah 1:19, it is written, "If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best of the land." This verse highlights the blessings associated with consenting to and aligning with God's commands.

5. Consent in the New Testament Church:
In the early church, consent played a role in communal decisions. Acts 15:25 describes how the apostles and elders, with the whole church, consented to send chosen men to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas to communicate the decisions of the Jerusalem Council. This collective consent was vital for maintaining unity and doctrinal integrity.

Theological Implications:

· Free Will and Responsibility:
The concept of consent is deeply tied to the theological understanding of free will. Humans are endowed with the ability to choose, and with that choice comes responsibility. Consent, therefore, is not merely a passive agreement but an active participation in God's plan or, conversely, a deviation from it.

· Consent and Covenant:
In biblical theology, consent is integral to the idea of covenant. God's covenants with humanity, such as those with Noah, Abraham, and the Israelites, required a response of consent and commitment. This mutual agreement between God and His people is foundational to the biblical narrative.

· Ethical Living:
The Bible calls believers to live ethically, which involves consenting to what is good and rejecting what is evil. Romans 12:9 instructs, "Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good." Consent, in this sense, is an expression of one's values and alignment with divine principles.

Conclusion:
While the Bible does not always explicitly use the term "consent," the concept is woven throughout its teachings, emphasizing the importance of agreement, integrity, and alignment with God's will in various aspects of life.

CONSENT

kon-sent': The verb implies compliance with the guidance and direction of another, and, therefore, a secondary and subordinate relation of approval, sympathy and concurrence on the part of the one who consents. He does not take the initiative, but yields to what the principal proposes. The phrase ek sumphonou, "by consent," means "by mutual agreement" (1 Corinthians 7:5), both parties concerned being placed on an equality. "With one consent" (Zephaniah 3:9, Hebrew "with one shoulder"; Luke 14:18) suggests, although it does not necessarily imply, the result of deliberation and consultation; it may have no other force than that of unanimity.
