Athaliah and Joash
(2 Chronicles 22:10–12)

1  וַֽעֲתַלְיָה֙ (And Athaliah) אֵ֣ם (the mother) אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ (of Ahaziah) וְרָאֲתָה (saw) כִּ֣י (that) מֵ֣ת (was dead) בְּנָ֑הּ (her son), וַתָּ֙קָם֙ (and she arose) וַתְּאַבֵּ֔ד (and destroyed) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) זֶ֥רַע (the seed) הַמַּמְלָכָֽה׃ (of the kingdom). 2  וַתִּקַּ֣ח (And took) יְהוֹשֶׁ֣בַע (Jehosheba) בַּת־ (the daughter) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ (of King) י֠וֹרָם (Joram), אֲח֨וֹת (sister) אֲחַזְיָ֜הוּ (of Ahaziah), אֶת־ (-) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחַזְיָ֗ה (of Ahaziah), וַתִּגְנֹ֤ב (and she stole away) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) מִתּ֤וֹךְ (from the midst) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הַמָּמוֹתְתִים (who were to be killed) אֹת֥וֹ (-). וְאֶת־ (And) מֵינִקְתּ֖וֹ (with his nurse) בַּחֲדַ֣ר (in) הַמִּטּ֑וֹת (the bedroom) וַיַּסְתִּ֧רוּ (and they hid) אֹת֛וֹ (him) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from) עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ (Athaliah), וְלֹ֥א (so that not) הוּמָֽת׃ (he was killed).

3  וַיְהִ֤י (And he was) אִתָּהּ֙ (with her) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), מִתְחַבֵּ֖א (hidden) שֵׁ֣שׁ (six) שָׁנִ֑ים (years), וַעֲתַלְיָ֖ה (and Athaliah) מֹלֶ֥כֶת (reigned) עַל־ (over) הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ (the land).

(2 Chronicles 23:1–11)

4  וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה (And in the year) הַ֠שְּׁבִיעִית (seventh) שָׁלַ֨ח (sent) יְהוֹיָדָ֜ע (Jehoiada) וַיִּקַּ֣ח׀ (and brought) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֣י (the heads) הַמֵּאיוֹת (of the hundreds), לַכָּרִי֙ (the Carites), וְלָ֣רָצִ֔ים (and the runners), וַיָּבֵ֥א (and he brought) אֹתָ֛ם (them) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) בֵּ֣ית (into the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). וַיִּכְרֹת֩ (And he made) לָהֶ֨ם (with them) בְּרִ֜ית (a covenant) וַיַּשְׁבַּ֤ע (and took an oath) אֹתָם֙ (from them) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH).

וַיַּ֥רְא (And he showed) אֹתָ֖ם (them) אֶת־ (-) בֶּן־ (the son) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 5  וַיְצַוֵּ֣ם (And he commanded them), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), זֶ֥ה (This is) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the thing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תַּעֲשׂ֑וּן (you⁺ shall do): הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֤ית (A third) מִכֶּם֙ (of you⁺) בָּאֵ֣י (who come on duty) הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת (on the Sabbath) וְשֹׁ֣מְרֵ֔י (and shall be keeping) מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (watch over) בֵּ֥ית (house) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king), 6  וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ (and a third) בְּשַׁ֣עַר (at the gate) ס֔וּר (of Sur), וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֥ית (and a third) בַּשַּׁ֖עַר (at the gate) אַחַ֣ר (behind) הָרָצִ֑ים (the runners). וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת (the watch) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house) מַסָּֽח׃ (pulled down). 7  וּשְׁתֵּ֤י (And the two) הַיָּדוֹת֙ (hands) בָּכֶ֔ם (of you⁺) כֹּ֖ל (-) יֹצְאֵ֣י (who go off duty) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (on the Sabbath) וְשָֽׁמְר֛וּ (and shall keep) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת (the watch) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (for) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king). 8  וְהִקַּפְתֶּ֨ם (And you⁺ shall surround) עַל־ (upon) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) סָבִ֗יב (on all sides), אִ֚ישׁ (each man) וְכֵלָ֣יו (and his weapons) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand). וְהַבָּ֥א (And he who is coming) אֶל־ (to) הַשְּׂדֵר֖וֹת (the ranks), יוּמָ֑ת (will be killed). וִהְי֥וּ (And You are to be) אֶת־ (with) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בְּצֵאת֥וֹ (in his going out) וּבְבֹאֽוֹ׃ (and in his coming in).

9  וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֞וּ (And did) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַמֵּאיוֹת (of the hundreds) כְּכֹ֣ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּה֮ (commanded) יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵן֒ (the priest), וַיִּקְחוּ֙ (and took) אִ֣ישׁ (each of them) אֶת־ (-) אֲנָשָׁ֔יו (his men)— בָּאֵ֣י (those going in) הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת (on the Sabbath) עִ֖ם (with) יֹצְאֵ֣י (those going out) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (on the Sabbath)— וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and they came) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (the priest). 10  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And gave) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) לְשָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַמֵּאיוֹת (of the hundreds) אֶֽת־ (-) הַחֲנִית֙ (the spears) וְאֶת־ (and) הַשְּׁלָטִ֔ים (the shields), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (unto King) דָּוִ֑ד (David had), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which were) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 11  וַיַּעַמְד֨וּ (And stood) הָרָצִ֜ים (the runners), אִ֣ישׁ׀ (each man) וְכֵלָ֣יו (and his weapons) בְּיָד֗וֹ (in his hand), מִכֶּ֨תֶף (from the shoulder) הַבַּ֤יִת (of the house) הַיְמָנִית֙ (right) עַד־ (to) כֶּ֤תֶף (the shoulder) הַבַּ֙יִת֙ (of the house) הַשְּׂמָאלִ֔ית (left), לַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (by the altar) וְלַבָּ֑יִת (and the house) עַל־ (upon) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) סָבִֽיב׃ (all around).

12  וַיּוֹצִ֣א (And he brought out) אֶת־ (-) בֶּן־ (the son) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of the king) וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (and put) עָלָיו֙ (on him) אֶת־ (-) הַנֵּ֙זֶר֙ (the diadem) וְאֶת־ (and) הָ֣עֵד֔וּת (the Testimony). וַיַּמְלִ֥כוּ (And they made king) אֹת֖וֹ (him) וַיִּמְשָׁחֻ֑הוּ (and anointed him), וַיַּכּוּ־ (and they clapped) כָ֔ף (their hands) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), יְחִ֥י (Long live) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס (the king).

The Death of Athaliah
(2 Chronicles 23:12–15)

13  וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) עֲתַלְיָ֔ה (Athaliah) אֶת־ (-) ק֥וֹל (the voice) הָֽרָצִ֖ין (of the runners) הָעָ֑ם (and of the people), וַתָּבֹ֥א (and she came) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 14  וַתֵּ֡רֶא (And she looked), וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold), הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ (the king) עֹמֵ֨ד (was standing) עַֽל־ (by) הָעַמּ֜וּד (a pillar) כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֗ט (according to custom), וְהַשָּׂרִ֤ים (and the leaders) וְהַחֲצֹֽצְרוֹת֙ (and the trumpets) אֶל־ (by) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king). וְכָל־ (And all) עַ֤ם (the people) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the land) שָׂמֵ֔חַ (were rejoicing) וְתֹקֵ֖עַ (and blowing) בַּחֲצֹֽצְר֑וֹת (with the trumpets).

וַתִּקְרַ֤ע (And tore) עֲתַלְיָה֙ (Athaliah) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדֶ֔יהָ (her clothes) וַתִּקְרָ֖א (and cried out), קֶ֥שֶׁר (Treason)! קָֽשֶׁר׃ס (Treason)!

15  וַיְצַו֩ (And commanded) יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֥י (the captains) הַמֵּיאוֹת (of the hundreds), פְּקֻדֵ֣י (inspectors) הַחַ֗יִל (of the army), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them), הוֹצִ֤יאוּ (Take outside) אֹתָהּ֙ (her) אֶל־ (to) מִבֵּ֣ית (the house) לַשְּׂדֵרֹ֔ת (between the ranks), וְהַבָּ֥א (and the one who comes) אַחֲרֶ֖יהָ (after her) הָמֵ֣ת (put to death) בֶּחָ֑רֶב (with the sword). כִּ֚י (For) אָמַ֣ר (had said) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), אַל־ (Not) תּוּמַ֖ת (do let her be killed) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

16  וַיָּשִׂ֤מוּ (And they seized) לָהּ֙ (her) יָדַ֔יִם (hands), וַתָּב֛וֹא (and she went) דֶּֽרֶךְ־ (by way) מְב֥וֹא (of entrance) הַסּוּסִ֖ים (of the horses) בֵּ֣ית (to the house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וַתּוּמַ֖ת (and she was put to death) שָֽׁם׃ס (there).

Jehoiada Restores the Worship of Yahweh
(2 Chronicles 23:16–21)

17  וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת (And cut) יְהוֹיָדָ֜ע (Jehoiada) אֶֽת־ (-) הַבְּרִ֗ית (a covenant) בֵּ֤ין (between) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) וּבֵ֤ין (and between) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הָעָ֔ם (the people) לִהְי֥וֹת (that they should be) לְעָ֖ם (a people) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (of YHWH)— וּבֵ֥ין (and also between) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הָעָֽם׃ (the people).

18  וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And went) כָל־ (all) עַם֩ (the people) הָאָ֨רֶץ (of the land) בֵּית־ (to the house) הַבַּ֜עַל (of the Baal) וַֽיִּתְּצֻ֗הוּ (and tore it down). אֶת־ (-) מִזְבְּחֹתוֹ (its altars) וְאֶת־ (and) צְלָמָיו֙ (images) שִׁבְּר֣וּ (they broke in pieces) הֵיטֵ֔ב (thoroughly), וְאֵ֗ת (and) מַתָּן֙ (Mattan) כֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) הַבַּ֔עַל (of the Baal) הָרְג֖וּ (they killed) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַֽמִּזְבְּח֑וֹת (the altars).

וַיָּ֧שֶׂם (And appointed) הַכֹּהֵ֛ן (the priest) פְּקֻדּ֖וֹת (officers) עַל־ (over) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 19  וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And he took) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַ֠מֵּאוֹת (of the hundreds), וְאֶת־ (and) הַכָּרִ֨י (the Carites), וְאֶת־ (and) הָרָצִ֜ים (the runners), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַ֣ם (the people) הָאָ֗רֶץ (of the land), וַיֹּרִ֤ידוּ (and they brought down) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַיָּב֛וֹאוּ (and they went) דֶּֽרֶך־ (by way) שַׁ֥עַר (of the gate) הָרָצִ֖ים (of the runners) בֵּ֣ית (to the house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king).

וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב (And he sat) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) הַמְּלָכִֽים׃ (of the kings). 20  וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח (And rejoiced) כָּל־ (all) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land), וְהָעִ֣יר (and the city) שָׁקָ֑טָה (was quiet). וְאֶת־ (And for) עֲתַלְיָ֛הוּ (Athaliah) הֵמִ֥יתוּ (they had killed) בַחֶ֖רֶב (with the sword) בֵּ֥ית (in house) מֶלֶךְ׃ס (of the king).

21  בֶּן־ (A son) שֶׁ֥בַע (of seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) יְהוֹאָ֥שׁ (Jehoash was) בְּמָלְכֽוֹ׃פ (in his reigning).
