Joash Anointed King of Judah
(2 Kings 11:4–12)

1  וּבַשָּׁנָ֨ה (And in the year) הַשְּׁבִעִ֜ית (seventh) הִתְחַזַּ֣ק (strengthened himself) יְהוֹיָדָ֗ע (Jehoiada), וַיִּקַּ֣ח (and he took) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַמֵּא֡וֹת (of the hundreds)— לַעֲזַרְיָ֣הוּ (Azariah) בֶן־ (son) יְרֹחָ֡ם (of Jeroham), וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל (and Ishmael) בֶּן־ (son) יְ֠הוֹחָנָן (of Jehohanan), וְלַֽעֲזַרְיָ֨הוּ (and Azariah) בֶן־ (son) עוֹבֵ֜ד (of Obed), וְאֶת־ (and) מַעֲשֵׂיָ֧הוּ (Maaseiah) בֶן־ (son) עֲדָיָ֛הוּ (of Adaiah), וְאֶת־ (and) אֱלִישָׁפָ֥ט (Elishaphat) בֶּן־ (son) זִכְרִ֖י (of Zichri)— עִמּ֥וֹ (with him) בַבְּרִֽית׃ (into the covenant). 2  וַיָּסֹ֙בּוּ֙ (And they went throughout) בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), וַיִּקְבְּצ֤וּ (and they gathered) אֶת־ (-) הַלְוִיִּם֙ (the Levites) מִכָּל־ (from all) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וְרָאשֵׁ֥י (and chief) הָאָב֖וֹת (the fathers) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and they came) אֶל־ (to) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem). 3  וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת (And made) כָּל־ (all) הַקָּהָ֥ל (the assembly) בְּרִ֛ית (a covenant) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) עִם־ (with) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king).

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) לָהֶ֗ם (to them), הִנֵּ֤ה (Behold), בֶן־ (the son) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) יִמְלֹ֔ךְ (shall reign), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עַל־ (concerning) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) דָוִֽיד׃ (of David). 4  זֶ֥ה (This is) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the thing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ (you⁺ shall do): הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֨ית (A third) מִכֶּ֜ם (of you⁺) בָּאֵ֣י (entering) הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת (on the Sabbath) לַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (of the priests) וְלַלְוִיִּ֔ם (and the Levites) לְשֹֽׁעֲרֵ֖י (shall be gatekeepers) הַסִּפִּֽים׃ (of the thresholds), 5  וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ (and a third) בְּבֵ֣ית (at the house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖ית (and a third) בְּשַׁ֣עַר (at the Gate) הַיְס֑וֹד (of the Foundation), וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֔ם (the people) בְּחַצְר֖וֹת (shall be in the courts) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 6  וְאַל־ (And none) יָב֣וֹא (let come) בֵית־ (into the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH), כִּ֤י (except) אִם־ (for) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (the priests) וְהַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים (and those who serve) לַלְוִיִּ֔ם (from the Levites); הֵ֥מָּה (they) יָבֹ֖אוּ (may go in), כִּי־ (for) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) הֵ֑מָּה (they are). וְכָל־ (And all) הָעָ֔ם (the people) יִשְׁמְר֖וּ (must keep) מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת (the charge) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 7  וְהִקִּיפוּ֩ (And shall surround) הַלְוִיִּ֨ם (the Levites) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) סָבִ֗יב (on all sides), אִ֚ישׁ (each man) וְכֵלָ֣יו (and with his weapon) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand). וְהַבָּ֥א (And whoever comes) אֶל־ (into) הַבַּ֖יִת (the house) יוּמָ֑ת (must be put to death). וִֽהְי֥וּ (And You are to be) אֶת־ (with) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בְּבֹא֥וֹ (in his coming in) וּבְצֵאתֽוֹ׃ (and in his going out).”

8  וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ (And did) הַלְוִיִּ֜ם (the Levites) וְכָל־ (and all) יְהוּדָ֗ה (Judah) כְּכֹ֣ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּה֮ (commanded) יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵן֒ (the priest), וַיִּקְחוּ֙ (and took) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֶת־ (-) אֲנָשָׁ֔יו (his men) בָּאֵ֣י (those coming in) הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת (on the Sabbath), עִ֖ם (with) יוֹצְאֵ֣י (those going out) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (on the Sabbath), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֥א (not) פָטַ֛ר (had dismissed) יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) הַֽמַּחְלְקֽוֹת׃ (the divisions). 9  וַיִּתֵּן֩ (And gave) יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) לְשָׂרֵ֣י (to the captains) הַמֵּא֗וֹת (of the hundreds) אֶת־ (-) הַֽחֲנִיתִים֙ (the spears), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמָּגִנּוֹת֙ (and the shields), וְאֶת־ (and) הַשְּׁלָטִ֔ים (and the bucklers), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (unto King) דָּוִ֑יד (David) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which were) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God). 10  וַיַּעֲמֵ֨ד (And he stationed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֜ם (the people), וְאִ֣ישׁ׀ (and every man) שִׁלְח֣וֹ (with his weapon) בְיָד֗וֹ (in his hand), מִכֶּ֨תֶף (from the shoulder) הַבַּ֤יִת (of the house) הַיְמָנִית֙ (the right) עַד־ (to) כֶּ֤תֶף (the shoulder) הַבַּ֙יִת֙ (of the house) הַשְּׂמָאלִ֔ית (the left), לַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (along by the altar) וְלַבָּ֑יִת (and at the house), עַל־ (upon) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) סָבִֽיב׃ (all around).

11  וַיּוֹצִ֣יאוּ (And they brought out) אֶת־ (-) בֶּן־ (the son) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of the king) וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ (and they placed) עָלָיו֙ (on him) אֶת־ (-) הַנֵּ֙זֶר֙ (the diadem), וְאֶת־ (and) הָ֣עֵד֔וּת (the testimony), וַיַּמְלִ֖יכוּ (and they made king) אֹת֑וֹ (him) וַיִּמְשָׁחֻ֙הוּ֙ (and anointed him). יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע (Jehoiada) וּבָנָ֔יו (and his sons) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), יְחִ֥י (Long live) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס (the king).

The Death of Athaliah
(2 Kings 11:13–16)

12  וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) עֲתַלְיָ֗הוּ (Athaliah) אֶת־ (-) ק֤וֹל (the noise) הָעָם֙ (of the people) הָֽרָצִ֔ים (running) וְהַֽמְהַֽלְלִ֖ים (and praising) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), וַתָּב֥וֹא (and she came) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 13  וַתֵּ֡רֶא (And she looked), וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold) הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ (the king) עוֹמֵ֨ד (was standing) עַֽל־ (by) עַמּוּד֜וֹ (his pillar) בַּמָּב֗וֹא (at the entrance), וְהַשָּׂרִ֣ים (and the leaders) וְהַחֲצֹצְרוֹת֮ (and the trumpeters) עַל־ (by) הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ (the king). וְכָל־ (And all) עַ֨ם (the people) הָאָ֜רֶץ (of the land) שָׂמֵ֗חַ (were rejoicing) וְתוֹקֵ֙עַ֙ (and blowing) בַּחֲצֹ֣צְר֔וֹת (with the trumpets), וְהַמְשֽׁוֹרֲרִים֙ (and the singers) בִּכְלֵ֣י (with instruments) הַשִּׁ֔יר (of song), וּמוֹדִיעִ֖ים (and the teachers) לְהַלֵּ֑ל (in praise).

וַתִּקְרַ֤ע (And tore) עֲתַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Athaliah) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדֶ֔יהָ (her garments) וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (and said), קֶ֥שֶׁר (Treason), קָֽשֶׁר׃ס (Treason).

14  וַיּוֹצֵא֩ (And brought out) יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֥י (the captains) הַמֵּא֣וֹת׀ (of the hundreds) פְּקוּדֵ֣י (who were set over) הַחַ֗יִל (the force), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵהֶם֙ (to them), הֽוֹצִיא֙וּהָ֙ (Take her outside) אֶל־ (from) מִבֵּ֣ית (within) הַשְּׂדֵר֔וֹת (the ranks), וְהַבָּ֥א (and whoever follows) אַחֲרֶ֖יהָ (her) יוּמַ֣ת (let him be killed) בֶּחָ֑רֶב (with the sword). כִּ֚י (For) אָמַ֣ר (had said) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), לֹ֥א (Not) תְמִית֖וּהָ (do kill her) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

15  וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ (And they seized) לָהּ֙ (her) יָדַ֔יִם (hands), וַתָּב֛וֹא (and she went) אֶל־ (by) מְב֥וֹא (way of the entrance) שַֽׁעַר־ (of Gate) הַסּוּסִ֖ים (of the Horses) בֵּ֣ית (into house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וַיְמִית֖וּהָ (and they killed her) שָֽׁם׃פ (there).

Jehoiada Restores the Worship of Yahweh
(2 Kings 11:17–21)

16  וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת (And cut) יְהוֹיָדָע֙ (Jehoiada) בְּרִ֔ית (a covenant) בֵּינ֕וֹ (between himself) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), לִהְי֥וֹת (that they should be) לְעָ֖ם (for a people) לַיהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 17  וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ (And went) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֤ם (the people) בֵּית־ (to the house) הַבַּ֙עַל֙ (of Baal) וַֽיִּתְּצֻ֔הוּ (and they tore it down), וְאֶת־ (and they broke) מִזְבְּחֹתָ֥יו (its altars) וְאֶת־ (and) צְלָמָ֖יו (images) שִׁבֵּ֑רוּ (in pieces), וְאֵ֗ת (and) מַתָּן֙ (Mattan) כֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) הַבַּ֔עַל (of Baal) הָרְג֖וּ (they killed) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הַֽמִּזְבְּחֽוֹת׃ (the altars).

18  וַיָּשֶׂם֩ (And appointed) יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע (Jehoiada) פְּקֻדֹּ֜ת (the oversight) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) בְּיַ֨ד (to the hand) הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (of the priests) הַלְוִיִּם֮ (the Levites), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) חָלַ֣ק (had assigned) דָּוִיד֮ (David) עַל־ (in) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָה֒ (of YHWH), לְֽהַעֲל֞וֹת (to offer) עֹל֣וֹת (the burnt offerings) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH), כַּכָּת֛וּב (as is written) בְּתוֹרַ֥ת (in the Law) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses), בְּשִׂמְחָ֣ה (with rejoicing) וּבְשִׁ֑יר (and with song), עַ֖ל (by) יְדֵ֥י (the hands) דָוִֽיד׃ (of David). 19  וַֽיַּעֲמֵד֙ (And he set) הַשּׁ֣וֹעֲרִ֔ים (the gatekeepers) עַֽל־ (at) שַׁעֲרֵ֖י (the gates) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְלֹֽא־ (so that no one) יָבֹ֥א (should enter) טָמֵ֖א (being unclean) לְכָל־ (in any) דָּבָֽר׃ (way).

20  וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And he took) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַמֵּא֡וֹת (of the hundreds), וְאֶת־ (and) הָֽאַדִּירִים֩ (the nobles), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמּֽוֹשְׁלִ֨ים (the governors) בָּעָ֜ם (of the people), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַ֣ם (the people) הָאָ֗רֶץ (of the land), וַיּ֤וֹרֶד (and he brought down) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH). וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ (And they went) בְּתֽוֹךְ־ (into the midst) שַׁ֥עַר (Gate) הָֽעֶלְי֖וֹן (of the Upper) בֵּ֣ית (to house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וַיּוֹשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ (and they set) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) עַ֖ל (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) הַמַּמְלָכָֽה׃ (of the kingdom). 21  וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ (And rejoiced) כָל־ (all) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land), וְהָעִ֣יר (and the city) שָׁקָ֑טָה (was quiet), וְאֶת־ (and for) עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ (Athaliah) הֵמִ֥יתוּ (they had killed) בֶחָֽרֶב׃ס (with the sword).
