Joash Repairs the Temple
(2 Chronicles 24:1–14)

1  בִּשְׁנַת־ (In the year) שֶׁ֤בַע (seventh) לְיֵהוּא֙ (of Jehu), מָלַ֣ךְ (became king) יְהוֹאָ֔שׁ (Jehoash). וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים (And forty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) צִבְיָ֖ה (was Zibiah) מִבְּאֵ֥ר (of Beer-) שָֽׁבַע׃ (sheba). 2  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And did) יְהוֹאָ֧שׁ (Jehoash) הַיָּשָׁ֛ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) כָּל־ (all) יָמָ֑יו (the days) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (in which) הוֹרָ֔הוּ (instructed him) יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (the priest).

3  רַ֥ק (But) הַבָּמ֖וֹת (the high places) לֹא־ (not) סָ֑רוּ (were taken away); ע֥וֹד (still) הָעָ֛ם (the people) מְזַבְּחִ֥ים (sacrificed) וּֽמְקַטְּרִ֖ים (and burned incense) בַּבָּמֽוֹת׃ (on the high places).

4  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹאָ֜שׁ (Jehoash) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (the priests), כֹּל֩ (All) כֶּ֨סֶף (the silver) הַקֳּדָשִׁ֜ים (of the holy things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יוּבָ֤א (are brought) בֵית־ (into the house) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), כֶּ֣סֶף (the silver) עוֹבֵ֔ר (of passing over) אִ֕ישׁ (of each man), כֶּ֥סֶף (the silver) נַפְשׁ֖וֹת (of his valuation) עֶרְכּ֑וֹ (assessment), כָּל־ (and all) כֶּ֗סֶף (the silver) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יַֽעֲלֶה֙ (purposes) עַ֣ל (in) לֶב־ (his heart) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) לְהָבִ֖יא (to bring) בֵּ֥ית (into the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH), 5  יִקְח֤וּ (let take it) לָהֶם֙ (unto themselves) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests), אִ֖ישׁ (each) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) מַכָּר֑וֹ (his constituency), וְהֵ֗ם (and they) יְחַזְּקוּ֙ (shall strengthen) אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֣דֶק (the breach) הַבַּ֔יִת (of the house) לְכֹ֛ל (in every place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יִמָּצֵ֥א (is found) שָׁ֖ם (there) בָּֽדֶק׃פ (a breach).

6  וַיְהִ֗י (And it was) בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (by the year) עֶשְׂרִ֧ים (twenty) וְשָׁלֹ֛שׁ (and third) שָׁנָ֖ה (year) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) יְהוֹאָ֑שׁ (Jehoash), לֹֽא־ (that not) חִזְּק֥וּ (had strengthened) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests) אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֥דֶק (the breach) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (of the house). 7  וַיִּקְרָא֩ (And called) הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (King) יְהוֹאָ֜שׁ (Jehoash) לִיהוֹיָדָ֤ע (to Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest), וְלַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (and to the priests), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), מַדּ֛וּעַ (Why) אֵינְכֶ֥ם (have you⁺ not) מְחַזְּקִ֖ים (strengthened) אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֣דֶק (the breach) הַבָּ֑יִת (of the house)? וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) אַל־ (no more) תִּקְחוּ־ (do take) כֶ֙סֶף֙ (silver) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) מַכָּֽרֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ constituency), כִּֽי־ (but) לְבֶ֥דֶק (for the breach) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house) תִּתְּנֻֽהוּ׃ (give it).

8  וַיֵּאֹ֖תוּ (And agreed) הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים (the priests) לְבִלְתִּ֤י (no more) קְחַת־ (to receive) כֶּ֙סֶף֙ (silver) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וּלְבִלְתִּ֥י (and not) חַזֵּ֖ק (to strengthen) אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֥דֶק (the breach) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (of the house).

9  וַיִּקַּ֞ח (And took) יְהוֹיָדָ֤ע (Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) אֲר֣וֹן (chest) אֶחָ֔ד (one) וַיִּקֹּ֥ב (and bored) חֹ֖ר (a hole) בְּדַלְתּ֑וֹ (in its lid) וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (and set) אֹתוֹ֩ (it) אֵ֨צֶל (beside) הַמִּזְבֵּ֜חַ (the altar), בַּיָּמִין (on the right side) בְּבֽוֹא־ (as comes) אִישׁ֙ (one) בֵּ֣ית (into the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH). וְנָֽתְנוּ־ (And put) שָׁ֤מָּה (there) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (the priests) שֹׁמְרֵ֣י (who kept) הַסַּ֔ף (the door) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) הַמּוּבָ֥א (brought) בֵית־ (into the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

10  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it was), כִּרְאוֹתָ֔ם (at their seeing) כִּֽי־ (that) רַ֥ב (there was much) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (silver) בָּֽאָר֑וֹן (in the chest), וַיַּ֨עַל (that came up) סֹפֵ֤ר (a scribe) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) וְהַכֹּהֵ֣ן (and the priest) הַגָּד֔וֹל (high), וַיָּצֻ֙רוּ֙ (and they bound it up) וַיִּמְנ֔וּ (and counted) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) הַנִּמְצָ֥א (found) בֵית־ (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 11  וְנָתְנוּ֙ (And they gave) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֣סֶף (the silver) הַֽמְתֻכָּ֔ן (the weighed) עַל־ (into) יַד (the hands) עֹשֵׂ֣י (of those who did) הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה (the work), הַפְּקֻדִים (those inspecting) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיּוֹצִיאֻ֜הוּ (and they paid it out) לְחָרָשֵׁ֤י (to) הָעֵץ֙ (the carpenters) וְלַבֹּנִ֔ים (and to the builders) הָעֹשִׂ֖ים (making) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH), 12  וְלַגֹּֽדְרִים֙ (and to the masons), וּלְחֹצְבֵ֣י (and to hewers) הָאֶ֔בֶן (of stone), וְלִקְנ֤וֹת (and for buying) עֵצִים֙ (timber) וְאַבְנֵ֣י (and stone) מַחְצֵ֔ב (hewn) לְחַזֵּ֖ק (to strengthen) אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֣דֶק (the breach) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וּלְכֹ֛ל (and for all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יֵצֵ֥א (went out) עַל־ (upon) הַבַּ֖יִת (the temple) לְחָזְקָֽה׃ (to strengthen it).

13  אַךְ֩ (However), לֹ֨א (not) יֵעָשֶׂ֜ה (there were made) בֵּ֣ית (for the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) סִפּ֥וֹת (basins) כֶּ֙סֶף֙ (of silver), מְזַמְּר֤וֹת (wick trimmers), מִזְרָקוֹת֙ (sprinkling bowls), חֲצֹ֣צְר֔וֹת (trumpets), כָּל־ (or any) כְּלִ֥י (articles) זָהָ֖ב (of gold) וּכְלִי־ (or articles) כָ֑סֶף (of silver), מִן־ (from) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) הַמּוּבָ֥א (brought) בֵית־ (into the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH); 14  כִּֽי־ (but) לְעֹשֵׂ֥י (to those doing) הַמְּלָאכָ֖ה (the work) יִתְּנֻ֑הוּ (they gave), וְחִזְּקוּ־ (and they strengthened) ב֖וֹ (with it) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

15  וְלֹ֧א (And not) יְחַשְּׁב֣וּ (they did require an account) אֶת־ (with) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (the men) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) יִתְּנ֤וּ (they delivered) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ (the silver) עַל־ (into) יָדָ֔ם (their hands) לָתֵ֖ת (to be paid) לְעֹשֵׂ֣י (to those doing) הַמְּלָאכָ֑ה (the work), כִּ֥י (for) בֶאֱמֻנָ֖ה (in faithfulness) הֵ֥ם (they) עֹשִֽׂים׃ (were acting). 16  כֶּ֤סֶף (The silver from) אָשָׁם֙ (the guilt offerings) וְכֶ֣סֶף (and the silver from) חַטָּא֔וֹת (the sin offerings) לֹ֥א (not) יוּבָ֖א (was brought) בֵּ֣ית (into the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); לַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (to the priests) יִהְיֽוּ׃פ (it belonged).

The Death of Joash
(2 Chronicles 24:23–27)

17  אָ֣ז (Then) יַעֲלֶ֗ה (went up) חֲזָאֵל֙ (Hazael) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram) וַיִּלָּ֥חֶם (and fought) עַל־ (against) גַּ֖ת (Gath) וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֑הּ (and captured it). וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (And set) חֲזָאֵל֙ (Hazael) פָּנָ֔יו (his face) לַעֲל֖וֹת (to go up) עַל־ (against) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem). 18  וַיִּקַּ֞ח (And took) יְהוֹאָ֣שׁ (Jehoash) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַקֳּדָשִׁ֡ים (the holy things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִקְדִּ֣ישׁוּ (had dedicated) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט (Jehoshaphat), וִיהוֹרָם֩ (and Joram), וַאֲחַזְיָ֨הוּ (and Ahaziah), אֲבֹתָ֜יו (his fathers) מַלְכֵ֤י (kings) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) קֳדָשָׁ֔יו (his own sacred things), וְאֵ֣ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַזָּהָ֗ב (the gold) הַנִּמְצָ֛א (found) בְּאֹצְר֥וֹת (in the treasuries) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וּבֵ֣ית (and in the house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king). וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (And he sent them) לַֽחֲזָאֵל֙ (to Hazael) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram). וַיַּ֖עַל (And he went up) מֵעַ֥ל (from) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem).

19  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) יוֹאָ֖שׁ (of Joash) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

20  וַיָּקֻ֥מוּ (And arose) עֲבָדָ֖יו (his servants) וַיִּקְשְׁרֽוּ־ (and formed) קָ֑שֶׁר (a conspiracy), וַיַּכּוּ֙ (and they killed) אֶת־ (-) יוֹאָ֔שׁ (Joash) בֵּ֥ית (at Beth-) מִלֹּ֖א (millo), הַיּוֹרֵ֥ד (which goes down) סִלָּֽא׃ (to Silla). 21  וְיוֹזָבָ֣ד (And for Jozabad) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁ֠מְעָת (of Shimeath) וִיהוֹזָבָ֨ד (and Jehozabad) בֶּן־ (son) שֹׁמֵ֤ר׀ (of Shomer), עֲבָדָיו֙ (his servants), הִכֻּ֣הוּ (struck him down) וַיָּמֹ֔ת (and he died). וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ (And they buried) אֹת֛וֹ (him) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (his fathers) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (and reigned) אֲמַצְיָ֥ה (Amaziah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
