1  וַיֶּאֶסֹ֧ף (And gathered) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) שִׁבְטֵ֥י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) שְׁכֶ֑מָה (to Shechem), וַיִּקְרָא֩ (and he called) לְזִקְנֵ֨י (for the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel), וּלְרָאשָׁ֗יו (and for its heads), וּלְשֹֽׁפְטָיו֙ (and for its judges), וּלְשֹׁ֣טְרָ֔יו (and for its officers); וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ (and they presented themselves) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֗ם (the people), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel): בְּעֵ֣בֶר (On the other side) הַנָּהָ֗ר (of the River) יָשְׁב֤וּ (dwelt) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ (Your⁺ fathers) מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם (of old)— תֶּ֛רַח (Terah), אֲבִ֥י (the father) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham), וַאֲבִ֣י (and the father) נָח֑וֹר (of Nahor)— וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ (and they served) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other). 3  וָ֠אֶקַּח (And I took) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיכֶ֤ם (your⁺ father) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) מֵעֵ֣בֶר (from beyond) הַנָּהָ֔ר (of the River), וָאוֹלֵ֥ךְ (and led) אוֹת֖וֹ (him) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), וָאֶרֶב (and multiplied) אֶת־ (-) זַרְע֔וֹ (his seed), וָֽאֶתֶּן־ (and gave) ל֖וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac). 4  וָאֶתֵּ֣ן (And I gave) לְיִצְחָ֔ק (to Isaac) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) וְאֶת־ (and) עֵשָׂ֑ו (Esau), וָאֶתֵּ֨ן (and I gave) לְעֵשָׂ֜ו (to Esau) אֶת־ (-) הַ֤ר (Mount) שֵׂעִיר֙ (Seir) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess), אוֹת֔וֹ (-) וְיַעֲקֹ֥ב (and Jacob) וּבָנָ֖יו (and his children) יָרְד֥וּ (went down) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (to Egypt).

5  וָאֶשְׁלַ֞ח (And I sent) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֤ה (Moses) וְאֶֽת־ (and) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron), וָאֶגֹּ֣ף (and I plagued) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (by what) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I did) בְּקִרְבּ֑וֹ (among them), וְאַחַ֖ר (and afterward) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (I brought out) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 6  וָֽאוֹצִ֤יא (And I brought) אֶת־ (-) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ fathers) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt), וַתָּבֹ֖אוּ (and you⁺ came) הַיָּ֑מָּה (to the sea). וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ (And pursued) מִצְרַ֜יִם (Egypt) אַחֲרֵ֧י (after) אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ fathers) בְּרֶ֥כֶב (with chariot) וּבְפָרָשִׁ֖ים (and with horsemen) יַם־ (to the Sea) סֽוּף׃ (Red). 7  וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), וַיָּ֨שֶׂם (and He put) מַֽאֲפֵ֜ל (darkness) בֵּינֵיכֶ֣ם׀ (between you⁺) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַמִּצְרִ֗ים (the Egyptians), וַיָּבֵ֨א (and He brought) עָלָ֤יו (upon them) אֶת־ (-) הַיָּם֙ (the sea) וַיְכַסֵּ֔הוּ (and covered them), וַתִּרְאֶ֙ינָה֙ (and saw) עֵינֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ eyes) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I did) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (against Egypt), וַתֵּשְׁב֥וּ (and you⁺ dwelt) בַמִּדְבָּ֖ר (in the wilderness) יָמִ֥ים (days) רַבִּֽים׃ (many).

8  וָאָבִאָה (And I brought) אֶתְכֶ֗ם (you⁺) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) הָאֱמֹרִי֙ (of the Amorite) הַיּוֹשֵׁב֙ (the ones dwelling) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on the other side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (of the Jordan), וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ (and they fought) אִתְּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺). וָאֶתֵּ֨ן (And I gave) אוֹתָ֤ם (them) בְּיֶדְכֶם֙ (into your⁺ hands), וַתִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ (and you⁺ possessed) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֔ם (their land), וָאַשְׁמִידֵ֖ם (and I destroyed them) מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃ (from before your⁺ faces). 9  וַיָּ֨קָם (And arose) בָּלָ֤ק (Balak) בֶּן־ (son) צִפּוֹר֙ (of Zippor), מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם (and to make war) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (against Israel), וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (and he sent) וַיִּקְרָ֛א (and called) לְבִלְעָ֥ם (Balaam) בֶּן־ (son) בְּע֖וֹר (of Beor) לְקַלֵּ֥ל (to curse) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 10  וְלֹ֥א (And not) אָבִ֖יתִי (I was willing) לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ (to listen) לְבִלְעָ֑ם (to Balaam), וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ (and blessing) בָּרוֹךְ֙ (he blessed you) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺). וָאַצִּ֥ל (And I delivered) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ (out of his hand).

11  וַתַּעַבְר֣וּ (And you⁺ went over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּן֮ (the Jordan) וַתָּבֹ֣אוּ (and came) אֶל־ (to) יְרִיחוֹ֒ (Jericho), וַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ (and fought) בָכֶ֣ם (against you⁺) בַּעֲלֵֽי־ (the men) יְ֠רִיחוֹ (of Jericho), הָֽאֱמֹרִ֨י (and the Amorite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֜י (and the Perizzite), וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֗י (and the Canaanite), וְהַֽחִתִּי֙ (and the Hittite), וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֔י (and the Girgashite), הַֽחִוִּ֖י (the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י (and the Jebusite). וָאֶתֵּ֥ן (And I delivered) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ (into your⁺ hands). 12  וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח (And I sent) לִפְנֵיכֶם֙ (before your⁺ faces) אֶת־ (-) הַצִּרְעָ֔ה (the hornet), וַתְּגָ֤רֶשׁ (and it drove out) אוֹתָם֙ (them) מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם (from before your⁺ faces)— שְׁנֵ֖י (two) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֑י (of the Amorite)— לֹ֥א (not) בְחַרְבְּךָ֖ (by your sword) וְלֹ֥א (and not) בְקַשְׁתֶּֽךָ׃ (by your bow). 13  וָאֶתֵּ֨ן (And I have given) לָכֶ֜ם (to you⁺) אֶ֣רֶץ׀ (a land) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (which) לֹֽא־ (not) יָגַ֣עְתָּ (you did labor) בָּ֗הּ (on it), וְעָרִים֙ (and cities) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹא־ (not) בְנִיתֶ֔ם (you⁺ did build), וַתֵּשְׁב֖וּ (and you⁺ dwell) בָּהֶ֑ם (in them). כְּרָמִ֤ים (Of vineyards) וְזֵיתִים֙ (and olive groves) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) נְטַעְתֶּ֔ם (you⁺ did plant), אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) אֹכְלִֽים׃ (eat).

Choose Whom You Will Serve
(Deuteronomy 10:12–22)

14  וְעַתָּ֞ה (And now) יְר֧אוּ (fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) וְעִבְד֥וּ (and serve) אֹת֖וֹ (Him) בְּתָמִ֣ים (in sincerity) וּבֶֽאֱמֶ֑ת (and in truth). וְהָסִ֣ירוּ (And put away) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (the gods) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) עָבְד֨וּ (served) אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֜ם (your⁺ fathers) בְּעֵ֤בֶר (on the other side) הַנָּהָר֙ (of the River) וּבְמִצְרַ֔יִם (and in Egypt), וְעִבְד֖וּ (and Serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH)! 15  וְאִם֩ (And if) רַ֨ע (it seems evil) בְּֽעֵינֵיכֶ֜ם (in your⁺ eyes) לַעֲבֹ֣ד (to serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), בַּחֲר֨וּ (choose) לָכֶ֣ם (for yourselves) הַיּוֹם֮ (this day) אֶת־ (-) מִ֣י (whom) תַעֲבֹדוּן֒ (you⁺ will serve), אִ֣ם (whether) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהִ֞ים (the gods) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָבְד֣וּ (served) אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ fathers), אֲשֶׁר֙ (that were) בְּעֵבֶר (on the other side) הַנָּהָ֔ר (of the River), וְאִם֙ (or) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) יֹשְׁבִ֣ים (are dwelling) בְּאַרְצָ֑ם (in their land). וְאָנֹכִ֣י (And I) וּבֵיתִ֔י (and my house) נַעֲבֹ֖ד (will serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH)!

16  וַיַּ֤עַן (And answered) הָעָם֙ (the people) וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said), חָלִ֣ילָה (Far be it) לָּ֔נוּ (from us) מֵעֲזֹ֖ב (that we should forsake) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) לַעֲבֹ֖ד (to serve) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other)! 17  כִּ֚י (For) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God) הוּא֩ (is He) הַמַּעֲלֶ֨ה (who brought up) אֹתָ֧נוּ (us) וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבוֹתֵ֛ינוּ (our fathers) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) עֲבָדִ֑ים (of slavery), וַאֲשֶׁ֧ר (and who) עָשָׂ֣ה (did) לְעֵינֵ֗ינוּ (in our sight) אֶת־ (-) הָאֹת֤וֹת (the signs) הַגְּדֹלוֹת֙ (great) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), וַֽיִּשְׁמְרֵ֗נוּ (and preserved us) בְּכָל־ (in all) הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָלַ֣כְנוּ (we went) בָ֔הּ (in it) וּבְכֹל֙ (and in all) הָֽעַמִּ֔ים (the people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) עָבַ֖רְנוּ (we passed) בְּקִרְבָּֽם׃ (among). 18  וַיְגָ֨רֶשׁ (And drove out) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָעַמִּ֗ים (the people), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֱמֹרִ֛י (the Amorite) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (who dwelt) הָאָ֖רֶץ (in the land), מִפָּנֵ֑ינוּ (from before us). גַּם־ (Also) אֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ (we) נַעֲבֹ֣ד (will serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּי־ (for) ה֖וּא (He is) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ס (our God)!

19  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֗ם (the people), לֹ֤א (Not) תֽוּכְלוּ֙ (you⁺ are able) לַעֲבֹ֣ד (to serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּֽי־ (for) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (a God) קְדֹשִׁ֖ים (holy) ה֑וּא (He is), אֵֽל־ (a God) קַנּ֣וֹא (jealous) ה֔וּא (He is). לֹֽא־ (Not) יִשָּׂ֥א (He will lift) לְפִשְׁעֲכֶ֖ם (your⁺ transgressions) וּלְחַטֹּאותֵיכֶֽם׃ (and your⁺ sins). 20  כִּ֤י (If) תַֽעַזְבוּ֙ (you⁺ forsake) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֖ם (and serve) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (gods) נֵכָ֑ר (foreign), וְשָׁ֨ב (and He will turn) וְהֵרַ֤ע (and do harm) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) וְכִלָּ֣ה (and consume) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵיטִ֥יב (He has done good) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺).

21  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua), לֹ֕א (No), כִּ֥י (but) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) נַעֲבֹֽד׃ (we will serve)!

22  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֗ם (the people), עֵדִ֤ים (Witnesses) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺ are) בָּכֶ֔ם (against yourselves) כִּֽי־ (that) אַתֶּ֞ם (you⁺) בְּחַרְתֶּ֥ם (have chosen) לָכֶ֛ם (for yourselves) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לַעֲבֹ֣ד (to serve) אוֹת֑וֹ (Him).

וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (And they said), עֵדִֽים׃ (Witnesses)!

23  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now), הָסִ֛ירוּ (put away) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (gods) הַנֵּכָ֖ר (the foreign) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that are) בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם (among you⁺) וְהַטּוּ֙ (and incline) אֶת־ (-) לְבַבְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ heart) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

24  וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ (And said) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-), יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our God) נַעֲבֹ֔ד (we will serve), וּבְקוֹל֖וֹ (and to His voice) נִשְׁמָֽע׃ (we will listen).

25  וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת (And cut) יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ (Joshua) בְּרִ֛ית (a covenant) לָעָ֖ם (with the people) בַּיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַה֑וּא (that), וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and he set) ל֛וֹ (for them) חֹ֥ק (a statute) וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט (and an ordinance) בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ (in Shechem). 26  וַיִּכְתֹּ֤ב (And wrote) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) בְּסֵ֖פֶר (in the Book) תּוֹרַ֣ת (of the Law) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וַיִּקַּח֙ (and he took) אֶ֣בֶן (a stone) גְּדוֹלָ֔ה (large) וַיְקִימֶ֣הָ (and set it up) שָּׁ֔ם (there) תַּ֚חַת (under) הָֽאַלָּ֔ה (the oak) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) בְּמִקְדַּ֥שׁ (by the sanctuary) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH). 27  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֗ם (the people), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), הָאֶ֤בֶן (the stone) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) תִּֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) בָּ֣נוּ (to us) לְעֵדָ֔ה (a witness), כִּֽי־ (for) הִ֣יא (it) שָׁמְעָ֗ה (heard has) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אִמְרֵ֣י (the words) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֶּ֖ר (He spoke) עִמָּ֑נוּ (to us). וְהָיְתָ֤ה (And it will be) בָכֶם֙ (against you⁺) לְעֵדָ֔ה (for a witness), פֶּֽן־ (lest) תְּכַחֲשׁ֖וּן (you⁺ deny) בֵּאלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

28  וַיְשַׁלַּ֤ח (And sent away) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people), אִ֖ישׁ (each man) לְנַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃פ (to his inheritance).

Joshua’s Death and Burial
(Judges 2:6–9)

29  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (after) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), וַיָּ֛מָת (that died) יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֖וּן (of Nun), עֶ֣בֶד (the servant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), בֶּן־ (a son) מֵאָ֥ה (of a hundred) וָעֶ֖שֶׂר (and ten) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 30  וַיִּקְבְּר֤וּ (And they buried) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) בִּגְב֣וּל (within the border) נַחֲלָת֔וֹ (of his inheritance) בְּתִמְנַת־ (at Timnath-) סֶ֖רַח (serah), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) בְּהַר־ (in the hill country) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim), מִצְּפ֖וֹן (on the north side) לְהַר־ (of Mount) גָּֽעַשׁ׃ (Gaash). 31  וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ד (And served) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (of Joshua), וְכֹ֣ל׀ (and all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים (of the elders) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הֶאֱרִ֤יכוּ (lengthened) יָמִים֙ (days) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and who) יָדְע֗וּ (had known) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the works) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (He had done) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (for Israel).

32  וְאֶת־ (And) עַצְמ֣וֹת (the bones) י֠וֹסֵף (of Joseph) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֶעֱל֨וּ (had brought up) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל׀ (of Israel) מִמִּצְרַיִם֮ (out of Egypt) קָבְר֣וּ (they buried), בִשְׁכֶם֒ (at Shechem) בְּחֶלְקַ֣ת (in the plot) הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה (of the ground) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) קָנָ֧ה (had bought) יַעֲקֹ֛ב (Jacob) מֵאֵ֛ת (from) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) חֲמ֥וֹר (of Hamor) אֲבִֽי־ (the father) שְׁכֶ֖ם (of Shechem) בְּמֵאָ֣ה (for a hundred) קְשִׂיטָ֑ה (kesitah), וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ (and it was) לִבְנֵֽי־ (to the sons) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) לְנַחֲלָֽה׃ (for an inheritance).

33  וְאֶלְעָזָ֥ר (And Eleazar) בֶּֽן־ (son) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (of Aaron) מֵ֑ת (died), וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ (and they buried) אֹת֗וֹ (him) בְּגִבְעַת֙ (in a hill) פִּֽינְחָ֣ס (of Phinehas) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) נִתַּן־ (was given) ל֖וֹ (to him) בְּהַ֥ר (in the hill country) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim).
