Israel Rebuked at Bochim

1  וַיַּ֧עַל (And came up) מַלְאַךְ־ (the angel) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְגָּ֖ל (Gilgal) אֶל־ (to) הַבֹּכִ֑ים פ (Bochim), וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (and said), אַעֲלֶ֨ה (I led up) אֶתְכֶ֜ם (you) מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם (out of Egypt) וָאָבִ֤יא (and brought) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (of which) נִשְׁבַּ֙עְתִּי֙ (I swore) לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (to your⁺ fathers), וָאֹמַ֕ר (and I said), לֹֽא־ (Not) אָפֵ֧ר (I will break) בְּרִיתִ֛י (My covenant) אִתְּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 2  וְאַתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺) לֹֽא־ (not) תִכְרְת֤וּ (shall cut) בְרִית֙ (a covenant) לְיֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ (with the dwellers) הָאָ֣רֶץ (of the land) הַזֹּ֔את (this); מִזְבְּחוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (their altars’) תִּתֹּצ֑וּן (you⁺ shall tear down).

וְלֹֽא־ (Not) שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ have obeyed) בְּקֹלִ֖י (My voice). מַה־ (What is) זֹּ֥את (this) עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ (you⁺ have done)? 3  וְגַ֣ם (And also) אָמַ֔רְתִּי (I said), לֹֽא־ (not) אֲגָרֵ֥שׁ (I will drive them out) אוֹתָ֖ם (-) מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם (before you⁺), וְהָי֤וּ (and they shall be) לָכֶם֙ (unto you⁺) לְצִדִּ֔ים (in the sides), וֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (and their gods) יִהְי֥וּ (shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (unto you⁺) לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ (a snare).

4  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כְּדַבֵּ֞ר (when spoke) מַלְאַ֤ךְ (the angel) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֶֽל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (that lifted up) הָעָ֛ם (the people) אֶת־ (-) קוֹלָ֖ם (their voice), וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ (and they wept). 5  וַֽיִּקְרְא֛וּ (And they called) שֵֽׁם־ (the name) הַמָּק֥וֹם (of the place) הַה֖וּא (that) בֹּכִ֑ים (Bochim), וַיִּזְבְּחוּ־ (and they sacrificed) שָׁ֖ם (there) לַֽיהוָֽה׃פ (to YHWH).

Joshua’s Death and Burial

6  וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח (And dismissed) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֑ם (the people), וַיֵּלְכ֧וּ (and went) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אִ֥ישׁ (each) לְנַחֲלָת֖וֹ (to his own inheritance) לָרֶ֥שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land). 7  וַיַּעַבְד֤וּ (And served) הָעָם֙ (the people) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (of Joshua), וְכֹ֣ל׀ (and all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים (of the elders) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הֶאֱרִ֤יכוּ (had lengthened) יָמִים֙ (their days) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) יְהוֹשׁ֔וּעַ (Joshua), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) רָא֗וּ (had seen) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה (the works) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) הַגָּד֔וֹל (great), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (He had done) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (for Israel).

8  וַיָּ֛מָת (And died) יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֖וּן (of Nun), עֶ֣בֶד (the servant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), בֶּן־ (a son) מֵאָ֥ה (of a hundred) וָעֶ֖שֶׂר (and ten) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 9  וַיִּקְבְּר֤וּ (And they buried) אוֹתוֹ֙ (him) בִּגְב֣וּל (within the border) נַחֲלָת֔וֹ (of his inheritance) בְּתִמְנַת־ (at Timnath-) חֶ֖רֶס (heres), בְּהַ֣ר (in the hill country) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim), מִצְּפ֖וֹן (on the north side) לְהַר־ (of Mount) גָּֽעַשׁ׃ (Gaash).

Israel’s Unfaithfulness
(Isaiah 43:22–28; Jeremiah 2:23–37)

10  וְגַם֙ (And) כָּל־ (all) הַדּ֣וֹר (the generation) הַה֔וּא (that) נֶאֶסְפ֖וּ (had been gathered) אֶל־ (to) אֲבוֹתָ֑יו (their fathers), וַיָּקָם֩ (and arose) דּ֨וֹר (generation) אַחֵ֜ר (another) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם (after them) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) לֹא־ (not) יָֽדְעוּ֙ (did know) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וְגַם֙ (and not) אֶת־ (-) הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה (the work) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (He had done) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (for Israel). 11  וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ (And did) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ (and they served) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּעָלִֽים׃ (the Baals), 12  וַיַּעַזְב֞וּ (and they forsook) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבוֹתָ֗ם (of their fathers), הַמּוֹצִ֣יא (who had brought out) אוֹתָם֮ (them) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַיִם֒ (of Egypt), וַיֵּלְכ֞וּ (and they went) אַחֲרֵ֣י׀ (after) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֗ים (other) מֵאֱלֹהֵ֤י (from the gods) הָֽעַמִּים֙ (of the peoples) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who were) סְבִיב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם (around them), וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ (and they bowed down) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), וַיַּכְעִ֖סוּ (and they provoked to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 13  וַיַּעַזְב֖וּ (And they forsook) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ (and did dervice) לַבַּ֖עַל (to Baal) וְלָעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃ (and to the Ashtoreths).

14  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was hot) אַ֤ף (the anger) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (against Israel), וַֽיִּתְּנֵם֙ (and He delivered them) בְּיַד־ (into the hands) שֹׁסִ֔ים (of plunderers) וַיָּשֹׁ֖סּוּ (and they plundered) אוֹתָ֑ם (them), וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֞ם (and He sold them) בְּיַ֤ד (into the hands) אֽוֹיְבֵיהֶם֙ (of their enemies) מִסָּבִ֔יב (all around), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָכְל֣וּ (they were able) ע֔וֹד (anymore) לַעֲמֹ֖ד (to stand) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the faces of) אוֹיְבֵיהֶֽם׃ (their enemies). 15  בְּכֹ֣ל׀ (In all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יָצְא֗וּ (they went out), יַד־ (the hand) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) הָיְתָה־ (was) בָּ֣ם (against them) לְרָעָ֔ה (for calamity), כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ (as) דִּבֶּ֣ר (had said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְכַאֲשֶׁ֛ר (and as) נִשְׁבַּ֥ע (had sworn) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), וַיֵּ֥צֶר (and were distressed) לָהֶ֖ם (they) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly).

Judges Raised Up

16  וַיָּ֥קֶם (And raised up) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) שֹֽׁפְטִ֑ים (judges), וַיּ֣וֹשִׁיע֔וּם (and they delivered them) מִיַּ֖ד (out of the hand) שֹׁסֵיהֶֽם׃ (of those plundering them).

17  וְגַ֤ם (Yet) אֶל־ (to) שֹֽׁפְטֵיהֶם֙ (their judges) לֹ֣א (not) שָׁמֵ֔עוּ (they would listen), כִּ֣י (but) זָנ֗וּ (they played the prostitute) אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (with) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods), אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ (and bowed down) לָהֶ֑ם (to them). סָ֣רוּ (They turned) מַהֵ֗ר (quickly) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֜רֶךְ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (in which) הָלְכ֧וּ (had walked) אֲבוֹתָ֛ם (their fathers) לִשְׁמֹ֥עַ (to listen to) מִצְוֺת־ (the commandments) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH); לֹא־ (not) עָ֥שׂוּ (they did do) כֵֽן׃ (so).

18  וְכִֽי־ (And) הֵקִ֨ים (raised up) יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH) לָהֶם֮ (for them) שֹֽׁפְטִים֒ (judges), וְהָיָ֤ה (and was) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִם־ (with) הַשֹּׁפֵ֔ט (the judge) וְהֽוֹשִׁיעָם֙ (and delivered them) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם (of their enemies) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַשּׁוֹפֵ֑ט (of the judge); כִּֽי־ (for) יִנָּחֵ֤ם (was moved to pity) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִנַּֽאֲקָתָ֔ם (by their groaning), מִפְּנֵ֥י (because of those) לֹחֲצֵיהֶ֖ם (who oppressed them) וְדֹחֲקֵיהֶֽם׃ (and harassed them). 19  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And it came to pass), בְּמ֣וֹת (when was dead) הַשּׁוֹפֵ֗ט (the judge), יָשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ (that they turned back) וְהִשְׁחִ֣יתוּ (and acted corruptly) מֵֽאֲבוֹתָ֔ם (more than their fathers) לָלֶ֗כֶת (going) אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (after) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) לְעָבְדָ֖ם (to serve them) וּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת (and bow down) לָהֶ֑ם (to them). לֹ֤א (Not) הִפִּ֙ילוּ֙ (they did cease) מִמַּ֣עַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם (from their deeds), וּמִדַּרְכָּ֖ם (and from their way) הַקָּשָֽׁה׃ (stubborn).

20  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was hot) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (against Israel), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and He said), יַעַן֩ (Because) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָבְר֜וּ (has transgressed) הַגּ֣וֹי (the nation) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִי֙ (My covenant) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוִּ֣יתִי (I commanded) אֶת־ (-) אֲבוֹתָ֔ם (their fathers), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (has listened) לְקוֹלִֽי׃ (to My voice), 21  גַּם־ (also) אֲנִי֙ (I) לֹ֣א (not) אוֹסִ֔יף (will continue) לְהוֹרִ֥ישׁ (to dispossess) אִ֖ישׁ (any) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (before their faces) מִן־ (from) הַגּוֹיִ֛ם (the nations), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָזַ֥ב (left) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua), וַיָּמֹֽת׃ (and he died), 22  לְמַ֛עַן (in order) נַסּ֥וֹת (to test) בָּ֖ם (by them) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), הֲשֹׁמְרִ֣ים (whether are going to keep) הֵם֩ (they) אֶת־ (-) דֶּ֨רֶךְ (the ways) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) לָלֶ֣כֶת (to walk) בָּ֗ם (in them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) שָׁמְר֥וּ (kept them) אֲבוֹתָ֖ם (their fathers), אִם־ (or) לֹֽא׃ (not).

23  וַיַּנַּ֤ח (And left) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (the nations) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) לְבִלְתִּ֥י (so as not) הוֹרִישָׁ֖ם (to dispossess them) מַהֵ֑ר (immediately), וְלֹ֥א (and not) נְתָנָ֖ם (did He deliver them) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃פ (of Joshua).
