The Conquest of Canaan Proceeds
(Joshua 13:1–7)

1  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵי֙ (after) מ֣וֹת (the death) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (of Joshua), וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙ (that asked) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בַּיהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מִ֣י (Who) יַעֲלֶה־ (shall go up) לָּ֧נוּ (for us) אֶל־ (against) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י (the Canaanite) בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה (as the first) לְהִלָּ֥חֶם (to fight) בּֽוֹ׃ (against them).

2  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), יְהוּדָ֣ה (Judah) יַעֲלֶ֑ה (shall go up); הִנֵּ֛ה (behold), נָתַ֥תִּי (I have delivered) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (into his hand).

3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוּדָה֩ (Judah) לְשִׁמְע֨וֹן (to Simeon) אָחִ֜יו (his brother), עֲלֵ֧ה (Come up) אִתִּ֣י (with me) בְגוֹרָלִ֗י (into my allotment), וְנִֽלָּחֲמָה֙ (that we may fight) בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (against the Canaanite). וְהָלַכְתִּ֧י (And will go) גַם־ (likewise) אֲנִ֛י (I) אִתְּךָ֖ (with you) בְּגוֹרָלֶ֑ךָ (into your allotment). וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And went) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him) שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃ (Simeon).

4  וַיַּ֣עַל (And went up) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), וַיִּתֵּ֧ן (and delivered) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י (the Canaanite) וְהַפְּרִזִּ֖י (and the Perizzite) בְּיָדָ֑ם (into their hand), וַיַּכּ֣וּם (and they struck them) בְּבֶ֔זֶק (in Bezek)— עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) אִֽישׁ׃ (men). 5  וַֽ֠יִּמְצְאוּ (And they found) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנִ֥י (Adoni-) בֶ֙זֶק֙ (bezek) בְּבֶ֔זֶק (in Bezek) וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ (and fought) בּ֑וֹ (against him), וַיַּכּ֕וּ (and they struck down) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) וְאֶת־ (and) הַפְּרִזִּֽי׃ (the Perizzite).

6  וַיָּ֙נָס֙ (And fled) אֲדֹ֣נִי (Adoni-) בֶ֔זֶק (bezek), וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ (and they pursued him) אַחֲרָ֑יו (-) וַיֹּאחֲז֣וּ (and caught him) אֹת֔וֹ (-) וַֽיְקַצְּצ֔וּ (and cut off) אֶת־ (-) בְּהֹנ֥וֹת (his thumbs) יָדָ֖יו (-) וְרַגְלָֽיו׃ (and his feet). 7  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֲדֹֽנִי־ (Adoni-) בֶ֗זֶק (bezek), שִׁבְעִ֣ים׀ (Seventy) מְלָכִ֡ים (kings), בְּֽהֹנוֹת֩ (with the thumbs) יְדֵיהֶ֨ם (of their hands) וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֜ם (and their feet) מְקֻצָּצִ֗ים (cut off), הָי֤וּ (have been) מְלַקְּטִים֙ (scavenging) תַּ֣חַת (under) שֻׁלְחָנִ֔י (my table); כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֔יתִי (I have done), כֵּ֥ן (so) שִׁלַּם־ (has repaid) לִ֖י (me) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (God). וַיְבִיאֻ֥הוּ (And they brought him) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem), וַיָּ֥מָת (and he died) שָֽׁם׃פ (there).

The Capture of Jerusalem and Hebron
(Joshua 15:13–19)

8  וַיִּלָּחֲמ֤וּ (And fought) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (against Jerusalem), וַיִּלְכְּד֣וּ (and they took) אוֹתָ֔הּ (it) וַיַּכּ֖וּהָ (and they struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָ֑רֶב (of the sword), וְאֶת־ (and) הָעִ֖יר (the city) שִׁלְּח֥וּ (they sent) בָאֵֽשׁ׃ (into fire). 9  וְאַחַ֗ר (And afterward) יָֽרְדוּ֙ (went down) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם (to fight) בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י (against the Canaanite) יוֹשֵׁ֣ב (dwelling) הָהָ֔ר (in the hill country), וְהַנֶּ֖גֶב (and in the Negev), וְהַשְּׁפֵלָֽה׃ (and in the Shephelah).

10  וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) יְהוּדָ֗ה (Judah) אֶל־ (against) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (the Canaanite) הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב (dwelling) בְּחֶבְר֔וֹן (in Hebron) וְשֵׁם־ (and the name) חֶבְר֥וֹן (of Hebron) לְפָנִ֖ים (was formerly) קִרְיַ֣ת (Kiriath-) אַרְבַּ֑ע (Arba)) וַיַּכּ֛וּ (and they killed) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁשַׁ֥י (Sheshai), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲחִימַ֖ן (Ahiman), וְאֶת־ (and) תַּלְמָֽי׃ (Talmai).

11  וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And they went) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there) אֶל־ (against) יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) דְּבִ֑יר (of Debir) וְשֵׁם־ (and the name) דְּבִ֥יר (of Debir) לְפָנִ֖ים (was formerly) קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) סֵֽפֶר׃ (sepher)). 12  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) כָּלֵ֔ב (Caleb), אֲשֶׁר־ (Whoever) יַכֶּ֥ה (strikes down) אֶת־ (-) קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) סֵ֖פֶר (sepher) וּלְכָדָ֑הּ (and takes it), וְנָתַ֥תִּי (and I will give) ל֛וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) עַכְסָ֥ה (Acsah) בִתִּ֖י (my daughter) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife). 13  וַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙ (And took it) עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל (Othniel) בֶּן־ (son) קְנַ֔ז (of Kenaz), אֲחִ֥י (brother) כָלֵ֖ב (of Caleb) הַקָּטֹ֣ן (the younger) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (of). וַיִּתֶּן־ (And he gave) ל֛וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) עַכְסָ֥ה (Acsah) בִתּ֖וֹ (his daughter) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife).

14  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass), בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ (in her coming in) וַתְּסִיתֵ֙הוּ֙ (that she urged him) לִשְׁא֤וֹל (to ask) מֵֽאֵת־ (from) אָבִ֙יהָ֙ (her father) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field). וַתִּצְנַ֖ח (And she dismounted) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הַחֲמ֑וֹר (her donkey), וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (and said) לָ֥הּ (to her) כָּלֵ֖ב (Caleb), מַה־ (What shall be) לָּֽךְ׃ (unto you)?

15  וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (And she said) ל֜וֹ (to him), הָֽבָה־ (Give) לִּ֣י (to me) בְרָכָ֗ה (a blessing). כִּ֣י (Since) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ (of the Negev) נְתַתָּ֔נִי (you have given me), וְנָתַתָּ֥ה (and give) לִ֖י (to me) גֻּלֹּ֣ת (springs) מָ֑יִם (of water).

וַיִּתֶּן־ (And gave) לָ֣הּ (to her) כָּלֵ֗ב (Caleb) אֵ֚ת (-) גֻּלֹּ֣ת (the springs) עִלִּ֔ית (upper) וְאֵ֖ת (and) גֻּלֹּ֥ת (the springs) תַּחְתִּֽית׃פ (lower).

16  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) קֵינִי֩ (of the Kenite), חֹתֵ֨ן (father-in-law) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (of Moses), עָל֨וּ (went up) מֵעִ֤יר (from the City) הַתְּמָרִים֙ (of Palms) אֶת־ (with) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) מִדְבַּ֣ר (into the Wilderness) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בְּנֶ֣גֶב (in the Negev) עֲרָ֑ד (of Arad); וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and they went) וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (and dwelt) אֶת־ (among) הָעָֽם׃ (the people).

17  וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (And went) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) אֶת־ (with) שִׁמְע֣וֹן (Simeon) אָחִ֔יו (his brother), וַיַּכּ֕וּ (and they attacked) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) יוֹשֵׁ֣ב (dwelling) צְפַ֑ת (in Zephath) וַיַּחֲרִ֣ימוּ (and devoted to destruction) אוֹתָ֔הּ (it). וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And they called) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁם־ (the name) הָעִ֖יר (of the city) חָרְמָֽה׃ (Hormah). 18  וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד (And took) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) אֶת־ (-) עַזָּ֣ה (Gaza) וְאֶת־ (and) גְּבוּלָ֔הּ (its territory), וְאֶֽת־ (and) אַשְׁקְל֖וֹן (Ashkelon) וְאֶת־ (and) גְּבוּלָ֑הּ (its territory), וְאֶת־ (and) עֶקְר֖וֹן (Ekron) וְאֶת־ (and) גְּבוּלָֽהּ׃ (its territory). 19  וַיְהִ֤י (And was) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶתּ־ (with) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), וַיֹּ֖רֶשׁ (and he possessed) אֶת־ (-) הָהָ֑ר (of the hill country). כִּ֣י (But) לֹ֤א (not) לְהוֹרִישׁ֙ (he did dispossess) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) הָעֵ֔מֶק (in the valley), כִּי־ (because) רֶ֥כֶב (chariots) בַּרְזֶ֖ל (of iron) לָהֶֽם׃ (they had).

20  וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ (And they gave) לְכָלֵב֙ (to Caleb) אֶת־ (-) חֶבְר֔וֹן (Hebron), כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֣ר (had said) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), וַיּ֣וֹרֶשׁ (and he dispossessed) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹשָׁ֖ה (the three) בְּנֵ֥י (sons) הָעֲנָֽק׃ (of Anak).

21  וְאֶת־ (And) הַיְבוּסִי֙ (the Jebusite) יֹשֵׁ֣ב (who inhabited) יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem) לֹ֥א (not) הוֹרִ֖ישׁוּ (did dispossess) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) בִנְיָמִ֑ן (of Benjamin). וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב (And has dwelt) הַיְבוּסִ֜י (the Jebusite) אֶת־ (with) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) בִנְיָמִן֙ (of Benjamin) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (in Jerusalem) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ס (this).

22  וַיַּעֲל֧וּ (And went up) בֵית־ (the house) יוֹסֵ֛ף (of Joseph)— גַּם־ (even) הֵ֖ם (they)— בֵּֽית־ (against Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el), וַֽיהוָ֖ה (and YHWH was) עִמָּֽם׃ (with them). 23  וַיָּתִ֥ירוּ (And they sent to spy out) בֵית־ (the house) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) בְּבֵֽית־ (in Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el) וְשֵׁם־ (and the name) הָעִ֥יר (of the city) לְפָנִ֖ים (was formerly) לֽוּז׃ (Lu z)), 24  וַיִּרְאוּ֙ (and saw) הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים (the spies) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) יוֹצֵ֣א (coming) מִן־ (out) הָעִ֑יר (of the city), וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ (and they said) ל֗וֹ (to him), הַרְאֵ֤נוּ (Show us), נָא֙ (please), אֶת־ (-) מְב֣וֹא (the entrance) הָעִ֔יר (to the city), וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ (and we will show) עִמְּךָ֖ (you) חָֽסֶד׃ (kindness).

25  וַיַּרְאֵם֙ (And he showed them) אֶת־ (-) מְב֣וֹא (the entrance) הָעִ֔יר (to the city), וַיַּכּ֥וּ (and they struck) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֖יר (the city) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָ֑רֶב (of the sword). וְאֶת־ (And) הָאִ֥ישׁ (the man) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ (his family) שִׁלֵּֽחוּ׃ (they sent away). 26  וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man) אֶ֖רֶץ (to the land) הַחִתִּ֑ים (of the Hittites), וַיִּ֣בֶן (and built) עִ֗יר (a city), וַיִּקְרָ֤א (and he called) שְׁמָהּ֙ (its name) ל֔וּז (Luz); ה֣וּא (that is) שְׁמָ֔הּ (its name) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).

The Failure to Complete the Conquest

27  וְלֹא־ (And not) הוֹרִ֣ישׁ (did he dispossess) מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה (Manasseh) אֶת־ (those) בֵּית־ (of Beth-) שְׁאָ֣ן (shean) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנוֹתֶיהָ֮ (its villages), וְאֶת־ (and) תַּעְנַ֣ךְ (Taanach) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֶיהָ֒ (its villages), וְאֶת־ (and) יֹשֵׁב (the dwellers) ד֜וֹר (of Dor) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנוֹתֶ֗יהָ (its villages), וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) יִבְלְעָם֙ (of Ibleam) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֶ֔יהָ (its villages), וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) מְגִדּ֖וֹ (of Megiddo) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנוֹתֶ֑יהָ (its villages); וַיּ֙וֹאֶל֙ (and for were determined) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (the Canaanite) לָשֶׁ֖בֶת (to dwell) בָּאָ֥רֶץ (in the land) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 28  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) חָזַ֣ק (became strong) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (that he put) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) לָמַ֑ס (to forced labor). וְהוֹרֵ֖ישׁ (And completely) לֹ֥א (not) הוֹרִישֽׁוֹ׃ס (did he drive him out).

29  וְאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (And Ephraim) לֹ֣א (not) הוֹרִ֔ישׁ (did dispossess) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב (dwelling) בְּגָ֑זֶר (in Gezer); וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב (and dwelt) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י (the Canaanite) בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ (among them) בְּגָֽזֶר׃פ (in Gezer).

30  זְבוּלֻ֗ן (ZEbulun) לֹ֤א (not) הוֹרִישׁ֙ (did dispossess) אֶת־ (-) יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) קִטְר֔וֹן (of Kitron), וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) נַהֲלֹ֑ל (of Nahalol); וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב (and dwelt) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (the Canaanite) בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ (among them) וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ (and were) לָמַֽס׃ס (put to forced labor).

31  אָשֵׁ֗ר (Asher) לֹ֤א (not) הוֹרִישׁ֙ (did dispossess) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) עַכּ֔וֹ (of Acco), וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) צִיד֑וֹן (of Sidon), וְאֶת־ (and) אַחְלָ֤ב (of Ahlab), וְאֶת־ (and) אַכְזִיב֙ (Achzib), וְאֶת־ (and) חֶלְבָּ֔ה (Helbah), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲפִ֖יק (Aphek), וְאֶת־ (and) רְחֹֽב׃ (Rehob). 32  וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (And dwelt) הָאָ֣שֵׁרִ֔י (the Asherite) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (among) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (dwellers) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land); כִּ֖י (for) לֹ֥א (not) הוֹרִישֽׁוֹ׃ס (they did drive them out).

33  נַפְתָּלִ֗י (Naphtali) לֹֽא־ (not) הוֹרִ֞ישׁ (did dispossess) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) בֵֽית־ (of Beth-) שֶׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (shemesh), וְאֶת־ (and) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) בֵית־ (of Beth-) עֲנָ֔ת (anath), וַיֵּ֕שֶׁב (and they dwelt) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (among) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (dwellers) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land). וְיֹשְׁבֵ֤י (And the dwellers) בֵֽית־ (of Beth-) שֶׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (shemesh) וּבֵ֣ית (and Beth-) עֲנָ֔ת (and anath) הָי֥וּ (were) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לָמַֽס׃ס (put to forced labor).

34  וַיִּלְחֲצ֧וּ (And pressed) הָאֱמֹרִ֛י (the Amorite) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) דָ֖ן (of Dan) הָהָ֑רָה (into the hill country), כִּי־ (for) לֹ֥א (not) נְתָנ֖וֹ (they would allow them) לָרֶ֥דֶת (to come down) לָעֵֽמֶק׃ (to the valley). 35  וַיּ֤וֹאֶל (And were determined) הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ (the Amorite) לָשֶׁ֣בֶת (to dwell) בְּהַר־ (in Mount) חֶ֔רֶס (Heres), בְּאַיָּל֖וֹן (in Aijalon), וּבְשַֽׁעַלְבִ֑ים (and in Shaalbim). וַתִּכְבַּד֙ (And became heavy) יַ֣ד (the strength) בֵּית־ (of the house) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph), וַיִּהְי֖וּ (and they were) לָמַֽס׃ (put to forced labor). 36  וּגְבוּל֙ (And the border) הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite) מִֽמַּעֲלֵ֖ה (was from the Ascent) עַקְרַבִּ֑ים (of Akrabbim) מֵהַסֶּ֖לַע (to Sela) וָמָֽעְלָה׃פ (and upward).
