Psalm 41

Victory over Betrayal
(John 13:18–30)

לַמְנַצֵּ֗חַ (For the one directing). מִזְמ֥וֹר (A Psalm) לְדָוִֽד׃ (of David).

1אַ֭שְׁרֵי (Blessed is) מַשְׂכִּ֣יל (he who acts wisely) אֶל־ (toward) דָּ֑ל (the poor);

בְּי֥וֹם (in a day) רָ֝עָ֗ה (of evil) יְֽמַלְּטֵ֥הוּ (will rescue him) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

2  יְהוָ֤ה׀ (YHWH) יִשְׁמְרֵ֣הוּ (will guard him) וִֽ֭יחַיֵּהוּ (and keep him alive);

יֶאְשֹּׁר (he will be blessed) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land),

וְאַֽל־ (and not) תִּ֝תְּנֵ֗הוּ (will deliver him)

בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ (to the will) אֹיְבָֽיו׃ (of his enemies).

3  יְֽהוָ֗ה (YHWH) יִ֭סְעָדֶנּוּ (will support him) עַל־ (on) עֶ֣רֶשׂ (his couch) דְּוָ֑י (of illness);

כָּל־ (all) מִ֝שְׁכָּב֗וֹ (his bed) הָפַ֥כְתָּ (You turn over) בְחָלְיֽוֹ׃ (in his sickness).

4  אֲ‍ֽנִי־ (I) אָ֭מַרְתִּי (said), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH), חָנֵּ֑נִי (be gracious to me);

רְפָאָ֥ה (heal) נַ֝פְשִׁ֗י (my soul), כִּי־ (for) חָטָ֥אתִי (I have sinned) לָֽךְ׃ (against You).

5  אוֹיְבַ֗י (My enemies) יֹאמְר֣וּ (speak) רַ֣ע (evil) לִ֑י (against me):

מָתַ֥י (When) יָ֝מ֗וּת (will he die) וְאָבַ֥ד (and perish) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ (his name)?

6  וְאִם־ (And if) בָּ֤א (one comes) לִרְא֨וֹת׀ (to see me), שָׁ֤וְא (emptiness) יְדַבֵּ֗ר (he speaks);

לִבּ֗וֹ (his heart) יִקְבָּץ־ (gathers) אָ֥וֶן (iniquity) ל֑וֹ (for himself)

יֵצֵ֖א (he goes out) לַח֣וּץ (at the street), יְדַבֵּֽר׃ (he speaks).

7  יַ֗חַד (Together) עָלַ֣י (against me) יִ֭תְלַחֲשׁוּ (they whisper) כָּל־ (all) שֹׂנְאָ֑י (those hating me); עָלַ֓י׀ (against me)

יַחְשְׁב֖וּ (they devise) רָעָ֣ה (evil) לִֽי׃ (to me):

8  דְּֽבַר־ (A thing) בְּ֭לִיַּעַל (of destruction) יָצ֣וּק (let be poured) בּ֑וֹ (into him),

וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and he who) שָׁ֝כַ֗ב (lies down), לֹא־ (not) יוֹסִ֥יף (shall he again) לָקֽוּם׃ (rise up).

9  גַּם־ (Even) אִ֤ישׁ (a man) שְׁלוֹמִ֨י׀ (of my welfare),

אֲשֶׁר־ (he whom) בָּטַ֣חְתִּי (I trusted), ב֭וֹ (in him)

אוֹכֵ֣ל (who ate) לַחְמִ֑י (my bread),

הִגְדִּ֖יל (has lifted up) עָלַ֣י (against me) עָקֵֽב׃ (the heel).

10  וְאַתָּ֤ה (And You), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), חָנֵּ֥נִי (show favor to me) וַהֲקִימֵ֑נִי (and raise me up),

וַֽאֲשַׁלְּמָ֥ה (that I may repay) לָהֶֽם׃ (them).

11  בְּזֹ֣את (By this) יָ֭דַעְתִּי (I know) כִּֽי־ (that) חָפַ֣צְתָּ (You have delighted) בִּ֑י (in me),

כִּ֤י (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יָרִ֖יעַ (should shout) אֹיְבִ֣י (my enemy) עָלָֽי׃ (over me).

12  וַאֲנִ֗י (And I), בְּ֭תֻמִּי (in my integrity) תָּמַ֣כְתָּ (may You take hold) בִּ֑י (on me)

וַתַּצִּיבֵ֖נִי (and set me) לְפָנֶ֣יךָ (before Your face) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

13  בָּ֘ר֤וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֨ה׀ (YHWH) אֱלֹ֘הֵ֤י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel),

מֵֽ֭הָעוֹלָם (from forever) וְעַ֥ד (and even to) הָעוֹלָ֗ם (forever).

אָ֘מֵ֥ן׀ (Amen) וְאָמֵֽן׃ (and Amen).
