Psalms 42–72

As the Deer Pants for the Water

לַמְנַצֵּ֗חַ (For the one directing). מַשְׂכִּ֥יל (A Maskil) לִבְנֵי־ (of the sons) קֹֽרַח׃ (of Korah).

1כְּאַיָּ֗ל (As the deer) תַּעֲרֹ֥ג (pants) עַל־ (for) אֲפִֽיקֵי־ (streams) מָ֑יִם (of water),

כֵּ֤ן (so) נַפְשִׁ֨י (my soul) תַעֲרֹ֖ג (pants) אֵלֶ֣יךָ (for You), אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (O God).

2  צָמְאָ֬ה (Thirsts) נַפְשִׁ֨י׀ (my soul) לֵאלֹהִים֮ (for God), לְאֵ֪ל (for God) חָ֥י (the living One).

מָתַ֥י (When) אָב֑וֹא (shall I come) וְ֝אֵרָאֶ֗ה (and appear) פְּנֵ֣י (before the face) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God)?

3  הָֽיְתָה־ (Have been) לִּ֬י (to me) דִמְעָתִ֣י (my tears) לֶ֭חֶם (as bread)

יוֹמָ֣ם (day) וָלָ֑יְלָה (and night),

בֶּאֱמֹ֥ר (in the saying) אֵלַ֥י (to me) כָּל־ (all) הַ֝יּ֗וֹם (the day),

אַיֵּ֥ה (Where is) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God)?

4  אֵ֤לֶּה (These things) אֶזְכְּרָ֨ה׀ (I remember) וְאֶשְׁפְּכָ֬ה (and I pour out) עָלַ֨י׀ (within myself) נַפְשִׁ֗י (my soul),

כִּ֤י (for) אֶֽעֱבֹ֨ר׀ (I crossed over) בַּסָּךְ֮ (with the throng),

אֶדַּדֵּ֗ם (I moved with them) עַד־ (up to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אֱלֹ֫הִ֥ים (of God),

בְּקוֹל־ (with the voice) רִנָּ֥ה (of shouting) וְתוֹדָ֗ה (and praise),

הָמ֥וֹן (with a multitude) חוֹגֵֽג׃ (keeping the feast).

5  מַה־ (Why) תִּשְׁתּ֬וֹחֲחִ֨י׀ (are you cast down), נַפְשִׁי֮ (O my soul),

וַתֶּהֱמִ֪י (and in commotion) עָ֫לָ֥י (within me)?

הוֹחִ֣ילִי (Wait) לֵֽ֭אלֹהִים (for God), כִּי־ (for) ע֥וֹד (still) אוֹדֶ֗נּוּ (I will praise Him)

יְשׁוּע֥וֹת (for the salvation) פָּנָֽיו׃ (of His face).

6  אֱ‍ֽלֹהַ֗י (O My God), עָלַי֮ (within me) נַפְשִׁ֪י (my soul) תִשְׁתּ֫וֹחָ֥ח (is downcast);

עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) אֶ֭זְכָּרְךָ (I remember You),

מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) יַרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan) וְ֝חֶרְמוֹנִ֗ים (and Hermon),

מֵהַ֥ר (from the mount) מִצְעָֽר׃ (of Mizar).

7  תְּהֽוֹם־ (Deep) אֶל־ (to) תְּה֣וֹם (deep) ק֭וֹרֵא (is calling)

לְק֣וֹל (at the voice) צִנּוֹרֶ֑יךָ (of Your waterfalls),

כָּֽל־ (and all) מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ (Your breakers) וְ֝גַלֶּ֗יךָ (and waves)

עָלַ֥י (over me) עָבָֽרוּ׃ (have passed).

8  יוֹמָ֤ם׀ (By day) יְצַוֶּ֬ה (commands) יְהוָ֨ה׀ (YHWH) חַסְדּ֗וֹ (His loving devotion),

וּ֭בַלַּיְלָה (and in the night) שִׁירָהּ (His song is) עִמִּ֑י (with me),

תְּ֝פִלָּ֗ה (a prayer) לְאֵ֣ל (to the God) חַיָּֽי׃ (of my life).

9  אוֹמְרָ֤ה׀ (I will say) לְאֵ֥ל (to God) סַלְעִי֮ (my rock),

לָמָ֪ה (Why) שְׁכַ֫חְתָּ֥נִי (have You forgotten me)?

לָֽמָּה־ (Why) קֹדֵ֥ר (in mourning) אֵלֵ֗ךְ (must I walk)

בְּלַ֣חַץ (in the oppression) אוֹיֵֽב׃ (of the enemy)?

10  בְּרֶ֤צַח׀ (With a shattering) בְּֽעַצְמוֹתַ֗י (in my bones)

חֵרְפ֥וּנִי (taunt me) צוֹרְרָ֑י (my enemies),

בְּאָמְרָ֥ם (in their saying) אֵלַ֥י (to me) כָּל־ (all) הַ֝יּ֗וֹם (the day),

אַיֵּ֥ה (Where is) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God)?

11  מַה־ (Why) תִּשְׁתּ֬וֹחֲחִ֨י׀ (are you cast down), נַפְשִׁי֮ (O my soul),

וּֽמַה־ (and why) תֶּהֱמִ֪י (are you in commotion) עָ֫לָ֥י (within me)?

הוֹחִ֣ילִי (Wait) לֵֽ֭אלֹהִים (for God), כִּי־ (for) ע֣וֹד (still) אוֹדֶ֑נּוּ (I will praise Him),

יְשׁוּעֹ֥ת (the salvation) פָּ֝נַ֗י (of my face), וֵֽאלֹהָֽי׃ (and my God).
