Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger
(Psalm 38:1–22)

לַמְנַצֵּ֣חַ (For the one directing). בִּ֭נְגִינוֹת (With stringed instruments) עַֽל־ (according to) הַשְּׁמִינִ֗ית (Sheminith), מִזְמ֥וֹר (a Psalm) לְדָוִֽד׃ (of David).

1יְֽהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), אַל־ (do not) בְּאַפְּךָ֥ (in Your anger) תוֹכִיחֵ֑נִי (rebuke me),

וְֽאַל־ (and not) בַּחֲמָתְךָ֥ (in Your rage) תְיַסְּרֵֽנִי׃ (discipline me).

2  חָנֵּ֥נִי (Be gracious to me), יְהוָה֮ (O YHWH), כִּ֤י (for) אֻמְלַ֫ל (weak) אָ֥נִי (I am).

רְפָאֵ֥נִי (Heal me), יְהוָ֑ה (O YHWH), כִּ֖י (for) נִבְהֲל֣וּ (are disturbed) עֲצָמָֽי׃ (my bones).

3  וְ֭נַפְשִׁי (And my soul) נִבְהֲלָ֣ה (is disturbed) מְאֹ֑ד (greatly);

וְאַתְּ (and You), יְ֝הוָ֗ה (O YHWH), עַד־ (until) מָתָֽי׃ (when)?

4  שׁוּבָ֣ה (Return), יְ֭הוָה (O YHWH), חַלְּצָ֣ה (draw out) נַפְשִׁ֑י (my soul).

ה֝וֹשִׁיעֵ֗נִי (Save me) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ (of Your loving devotion).

5  כִּ֤י (For) אֵ֣ין (is not) בַּמָּ֣וֶת (in death) זִכְרֶ֑ךָ (remembrance of You);

בִּ֝שְׁא֗וֹל (in Sheol) מִ֣י (who) יֽוֹדֶה־ (can give thanks) לָּֽךְ׃ (to You)?

6  יָגַ֤עְתִּי׀ (I have grown weary) בְּֽאַנְחָתִ֗י (in my sighing);

אַשְׂחֶ֣ה (I cause to swim) בְכָל־ (through all) לַ֭יְלָה (the night) מִטָּתִ֑י (my bed);

בְּ֝דִמְעָתִ֗י (with my tears) עַרְשִׂ֥י (my couch) אַמְסֶֽה׃ (I melt).

7  עָֽשְׁשָׁ֣ה (Has wasted away) מִכַּ֣עַס (from grief) עֵינִ֑י (my eye);

עָֽ֝תְקָ֗ה (it grows old) בְּכָל־ (because of all) צוֹרְרָֽי׃ (afflicting me).

8  ס֣וּרוּ (Turn away) מִ֭מֶּנִּי (from me) כָּל־ (all) פֹּ֣עֲלֵי (workers) אָ֑וֶן (of iniquity),

כִּֽי־ (for) שָׁמַ֥ע (has heard) יְ֝הוָ֗ה (YHWH) ק֣וֹל (the voice) בִּכְיִֽי׃ (of my weeping).

9  שָׁמַ֣ע (Has heard) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) תְּחִנָּתִ֑י (my supplication);

יְ֝הוָ֗ה (YHWH) תְּֽפִלָּתִ֥י (my prayer) יִקָּֽח׃ (has received).

10  יֵבֹ֤שׁוּ׀ (Let them be ashamed) וְיִבָּהֲל֣וּ (and disturbed) מְ֭אֹד (greatly) כָּל־ (all) אֹיְבָ֑י (my enemies);

יָ֝שֻׁ֗בוּ (let them turn back) יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ (and be ashamed) רָֽגַע׃ (in an instant).
