Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger
(Psalm 6:1–10)

מִזְמ֖וֹר (A Psalm) לְדָוִ֣ד (of David), לְהַזְכִּֽיר׃ (for remembrance).

1יְֽהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), אַל־ (not) בְּקֶצְפְּךָ֥ (in Your wrath) תוֹכִיחֵ֑נִי (should You rebuke me)

וּֽבַחֲמָתְךָ֥ (and in Your fury) תְיַסְּרֵֽנִי׃ (chastise me).

2  כִּֽי־ (For) חִ֭צֶּיךָ (Your arrows) נִ֣חֲתוּ (descend) בִ֑י (into me)

וַתִּנְחַ֖ת (and comes down) עָלַ֣י (on me) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (Your hand).

3  אֵין־ (No) מְתֹ֣ם (soundness) בִּ֭בְשָׂרִי (is in my flesh)

מִפְּנֵ֣י (before the face) זַעְמֶ֑ךָ (of Your anger);

אֵין־ (no) שָׁל֥וֹם (peace) בַּ֝עֲצָמַ֗י (is in my bones)

מִפְּנֵ֥י (before the face) חַטָּאתִֽי׃ (of my sin).

4  כִּ֣י (For) עֲ֭וֺנֹתַי (my iniquities) עָבְר֣וּ (have passed over) רֹאשִׁ֑י (my head);

כְּמַשָּׂ֥א (like a burden) כָ֝בֵ֗ד (heavy) יִכְבְּד֥וּ (they are heavy) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (for me).

5  הִבְאִ֣ישׁוּ (Are foul) נָ֭מַקּוּ (and festering) חַבּוּרֹתָ֑י (my wounds)

מִ֝פְּנֵ֗י (before the face) אִוַּלְתִּֽי׃ (of my foolishness).

6  נַעֲוֵ֣יתִי (I am bent); שַׁחֹ֣תִי (I am bowed down) עַד־ (even to) מְאֹ֑ד (excess);

כָּל־ (all) הַ֝יּ֗וֹם (the day) קֹדֵ֥ר (mourning) הִלָּֽכְתִּי׃ (I go about).

7  כִּֽי־ (For) כְ֭סָלַי (my loins) מָלְא֣וּ (are full of) נִקְלֶ֑ה (burning),

וְאֵ֥ין (and there is no) מְ֝תֹ֗ם (soundness) בִּבְשָׂרִֽי׃ (in my flesh).

8  נְפוּג֣וֹתִי (I am numb) וְנִדְכֵּ֣יתִי (and crushed) עַד־ (even to) מְאֹ֑ד (excess);

שָׁ֝אַ֗גְתִּי (I roar) מִֽנַּהֲמַ֥ת (from the groaning) לִבִּֽי׃ (of my heart).

9  אֲ‍ֽדֹנָי (O Lord), נֶגְדְּךָ֥ (before You) כָל־ (is all) תַּאֲוָתִ֑י (my desire),

וְ֝אַנְחָתִ֗י (and my groaning) מִמְּךָ֥ (from You) לֹא־ (not) נִסְתָּֽרָה׃ (is hidden).

10  לִבִּ֣י (My heart) סְ֭חַרְחַר (pounds); עֲזָבַ֣נִי (has forsaken me) כֹחִ֑י (my power);

וְֽאוֹר־ (and the light) עֵינַ֥י (of my eyes), גַּם־ (even) הֵ֝֗ם (they) אֵ֣ין (are not) אִתִּֽי׃ (with me).

11  אֹֽהֲבַ֨י׀ (My beloved) וְרֵעַ֗י (and my friends) מִנֶּ֣גֶד (from) נִגְעִ֣י (my plague) יַעֲמֹ֑דוּ (stand away),

וּ֝קְרוֹבַ֗י (and my neighbors) מֵרָחֹ֥ק (far off) עָמָֽדוּ׃ (stand).

12  וַיְנַקְשׁ֤וּ׀ (And lay snares) מְבַקְשֵׁ֬י (those seeking) נַפְשִׁ֗י (my soul),

וְדֹרְשֵׁ֣י (and those searching out) רָ֭עָתִי (my harm) דִּבְּר֣וּ (speak)

הַוּ֑וֹת (destruction), וּ֝מִרְמ֗וֹת (and treachery) כָּל־ (all) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) יֶהְגּֽוּ׃ (they muse).

13  וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) כְ֭חֵרֵשׁ (like a deaf one) לֹ֣א (not) אֶשְׁמָ֑ע (does hear);

וּ֝כְאִלֵּ֗ם (and like a mute one) לֹ֣א (who not) יִפְתַּח־ (does open) פִּֽיו׃ (his mouth).

14  וָאֱהִ֗י (And I am) כְּ֭אִישׁ (like a man) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) לֹא־ (not) שֹׁמֵ֑עַ (is hearing),

וְאֵ֥ין (and not) בְּ֝פִ֗יו (in his mouth) תּוֹכָחֽוֹת׃ (are rebukes).

15  כִּֽי־ (Because) לְךָ֣ (for You), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH), הוֹחָ֑לְתִּי (I have waited);

אַתָּ֥ה (You) תַ֝עֲנֶ֗ה (will answer), אֲדֹנָ֥י (O Lord) אֱלֹהָֽי׃ (my God).

16  כִּֽי־ (For) אָ֭מַרְתִּי (I said),

פֶּן־ (Lest) יִשְׂמְחוּ־ (they rejoice) לִ֑י (over me)

בְּמ֥וֹט (in the slipping) רַ֝גְלִ֗י (my foot)—

עָלַ֥י (against me) הִגְדִּֽילוּ׃ (they magnify themselves).

17  כִּֽי־ (For) אֲ֭נִי (I) לְצֶ֣לַע (to fall) נָכ֑וֹן (am ready),

וּמַכְאוֹבִ֖י (and my sorrow is) נֶגְדִּ֣י (before me) תָמִֽיד׃ (continually).

18  כִּֽי־ (For) עֲוֺנִ֥י (my iniquity) אַגִּ֑יד (I declare);

אֶ֝דְאַ֗ג (I am anxious) מֵֽחַטָּאתִֽי׃ (over my sin).

19  וְֽ֭אֹיְבַי (And my enemies) חַיִּ֣ים (vigorous) עָצֵ֑מוּ (are many),

וְרַבּ֖וּ (and have been multiplied) שֹׂנְאַ֣י (those hating me) שָֽׁקֶר׃ (without cause).

20  וּמְשַׁלְּמֵ֣י (And those repaying) רָ֭עָה (evil) תַּ֣חַת (for) טוֹבָ֑ה (good),

יִ֝שְׂטְנ֗וּנִי (they oppose me), תַּ֣חַת (because) רְדוֹפִי (of my pursuing) טֽוֹב׃ (good).

21  אַל־ (Not) תַּֽעַזְבֵ֥נִי (should You forsake me), יְהוָ֑ה (O YHWH);

אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י (O my God), אַל־ (not) תִּרְחַ֥ק (be far) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (from me).

22  ח֥וּשָׁה (Hurry) לְעֶזְרָתִ֑י (to help me),

אֲ֝דֹנָ֗י (O Lord) תְּשׁוּעָתִֽי׃ (my salvation).
