As often as it passes through, it will carry you away;
This phrase refers to the impending judgment and destruction that will come upon the people of Israel due to their disobedience and rejection of God's covenant. The imagery of something passing through and carrying away suggests a relentless and unstoppable force, often interpreted as the Assyrian invasion. Historically, the Assyrians were known for their military prowess and their ability to conquer and exile nations. This serves as a warning to the Israelites that their reliance on foreign alliances and their own strength will not save them from God's judgment.

it will sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.
The continuous nature of the judgment is emphasized here, indicating that it will be persistent and inescapable. The mention of "morning after morning" and "by day and by night" suggests a comprehensive and unrelenting calamity. This can be seen as a reflection of the covenant curses outlined in Deuteronomy 28, where disobedience leads to ongoing suffering and distress. The imagery of sweeping through also evokes the idea of a flood, which is often used in the Bible to symbolize overwhelming judgment (e.g., the flood in Genesis).

The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
The realization of the severity and certainty of God's judgment is meant to instill fear and prompt repentance. The message is clear: ignoring God's warnings and continuing in sin will lead to devastating consequences. This terror is not just fear of physical destruction but also a recognition of the spiritual implications of being separated from God's protection and favor. The prophetic message serves as a call to return to God and seek His mercy. This theme of fear leading to repentance is echoed in other scriptures, such as Proverbs 1:7, which states that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Isaiah
A major prophet in the Old Testament, Isaiah is the author of the book. He prophesied to the Kingdom of Judah during a time of moral and spiritual decline.

2. Judah

3. Assyrian Invasion
The historical context of this passage involves the threat of the Assyrian Empire, which was a tool of God's judgment against Israel and Judah.
Teaching Points
The Certainty of God's Judgment
God's judgment is inevitable and will come repeatedly until His purposes are fulfilled. This should lead us to a sober reflection on our spiritual state.

The Importance of Understanding God's Message
The terror described is linked to understanding the message. We must seek to understand God's word deeply to respond appropriately.

The Call to Repentance
The passage serves as a warning to turn from sin and seek God's mercy. Repentance is the appropriate response to the realization of impending judgment.

The Role of Fear in Faith
A healthy fear of God's judgment can lead to wisdom and a deeper faith, as it drives us to seek refuge in Christ.

The Continuous Nature of God's Warnings
Just as the judgment is described as coming "morning after morning," God's warnings are continuous, giving us ample opportunity to turn back to Him.(19) From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you.--The words that follow remind us of Deuteronomy 28:66-67. Day by day would come the dread rumours of the Assyrian march. Then the "report" would no longer be unintelligible. Instead of the "line upon line, precept upon precept," there would be "mourning upon mourning," "day and night," each with its sad burden of alarming tidings. To understand those tidings would be a vexation and a terror. The word for "report" is the same as the "doctrine" of Isaiah 28:9, and stands, in each case, for the deride "message" of the prophet.

Verse 19. - From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you; rather, as often as it passes along, it shall take you away; i.e. as often as the flood of Assyrian invasion sweeps through Palestine, it shall thin the population by death and captivity. We know of at least eight passages of the flood through Judaea - one under Sargon, two under Sennacherib, three or four under Esarhaddon, and two under Asshur-bani-pal. There may have been more. Morning by morning; i.e. frequently - time after time. Shall it pass over; rather, pass along, or pass through. It shall be a vexation only to understand the report; rather, it will be sheer terror to understand the doctrine. There is an allusion to ver. 9. They had thought scorn of Isaiah's "doctrine," when he taught it them by word of mouth; they will understand it but too well, and find it" nothing but a terror," when it is impressed on them by the preaching of facts.
