Hananiah's False Prophecy

I have even given him control of the beasts of the field.’ ”…

“Go and tell Hananiah

Jeremiah was sent directly to confront Hananiah, whose name means “Yahweh is gracious,” whose public prediction of Babylon’s swift defeat contradicted God’s warning that Judah would remain under Babylonian rule. Hananiah’s assurances encouraged the people to reject the discipline God had appointed.

2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Isa 37:21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…

that this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah spoke with divine authority, not personal opinion. The issue was whether Judah would submit to God’s revealed judgment or follow a message that promised relief without repentance.

2Ki 1:16 And Elijah said to King Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says…

Hananiah had broken the wooden yoke Jeremiah wore, a symbol of subjugation and servitude under Babylon’s temporary, lighter burden over Judah and the surrounding nations. His action pictured the removal of Babylon’s power, but it falsely represented God’s will.

Jer 27:2 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…

but in its place you have fashioned a yoke of iron.’

Hananiah’s false sign would not remove Judah’s bondage. Instead, Babylon’s domination would become more severe and unavoidable. The iron yoke portrayed the firmness of God’s judgment after the nation refused His word.

Teaching Points
The Danger of False Prophecy
False prophets, like Hananiah, can lead people astray with messages that appeal to their desires rather than God's truth. Discernment is crucial.

Consequences of Disobedience
Ignoring God's warnings can lead to harsher consequences. The shift from a wooden to an iron yoke illustrates the severity of continued rebellion.

The Importance of True Prophetic Voices
True prophets, like Jeremiah, often face opposition but remain steadfast in delivering God's message. We must value and heed true prophetic voices.

God's Sovereignty and Justice
God's plans will prevail despite human opposition. His justice ensures that falsehood is exposed and truth is upheld.

The Call to Repentance
Even in judgment, God offers opportunities for repentance. Recognizing and turning from falsehood can restore us to God's intended path.

Verse 13. - The yokes of wood; rather, a yoke of wood. The word rendered in the Authorized Version" yokes" means properly "poles," two of which, with the "bands," composed a "yoke" (see on Jeremiah 27:2). But thou shalt make; rather, but thou hast made. The sense in which Hananiah is said to have made "a yoke of iron" (we should render in the singular) comes out in ver. 14. The point is that there was a certain justification for Hananiah's violent act, but not that which he supposed. Jeremiah's wooden yoke was really an inadequate symbol; the prophet was too tender to his people. Thus God made the truth appear in still fuller brightness from the very perverseness of its enemy.

Jeremiah 28:13 shows the seriousness of distorting God’s word. Hananiah’s symbolic victory was hollow; breaking the wooden yoke only ensured a stronger iron one. When people reject God’s corrective measures, they invite heavier discipline. God’s pronouncement through Jeremiah proves literal, certain, and rooted in His righteous purpose: submission to His will brings life, while resistance forges chains that cannot be broken.
