Then the whole council rose and led Jesus away to Pilate.1Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate.
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.”2They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.3So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”4Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no grounds for charging this man."
But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people all over Judea with His teaching. He began in Galilee and has come all the way here.”5But they kept insisting, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here."
When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
And learning that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem at that time.7Finding that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle.8Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him.
Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer.9So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.
Meanwhile, the chief priests and scribes stood there, vehemently accusing Him.10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.
And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate.11Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.
That day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies.12That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.
Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,13Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,
and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.14and said to them, "You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of.
Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.15Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.
Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”16Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him."

But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”18Then they all cried out together, "Take this man away! Release Barabbas to us!"
(Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)19(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)
Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,
but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”21but they kept shouting, "Crucify! Crucify him!"
A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.”22A third time he said to them, "Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him."
But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed.23But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified, and their voices won out.
So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met.24So Pilate decided to grant their demand
As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and handed Jesus over to their will.25and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.
As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.26As they led him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him.27A large crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting him.
But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28But turning to them, Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children.
Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’29Look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the women without children, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!'
At that time ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”31For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus.32Two others--criminals--were also led away to be executed with him.
When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left.33When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.34Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing." And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”35The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: "He saved others; let him save himself if this is God's Messiah, the Chosen One!"
The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine.36The soldiers also mocked him. They came offering him sour wine
“If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!”37and said, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"
Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38An inscription was above him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save Yourself and us!”39Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!"
But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?40But the other answered, rebuking him: "Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment?
We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”41We are punished justly, because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”43And he said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three,
The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.45because the sun's light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle.
Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.46And Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit." Saying this, he breathed his last.
When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”47When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, "This man really was righteous!"
And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.48All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests.
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.49But all who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Now there was a Council member named Joseph, a good and righteous man,50There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin,
who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea, and was waiting for the kingdom of God.51who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.
He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.52He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.
Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid.53Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.
It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was beginning.54It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.55The women who had come with him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how his body was placed.
Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.56Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
