On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.1They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.2And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.3He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.4for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.5Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.6And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”7And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”8For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
“What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”9And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.11Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”12and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”
He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.13So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.14The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.16And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.
And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.17And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.
As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”19And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.21And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.
A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet22Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet
and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”23and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.24And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.
And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.25And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.26and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.
When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.27She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”28For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.29And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”30And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”31And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
But He kept looking around to see who had done this.32And he looked around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.33But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”35While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”36But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.37And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.38They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”39And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.40And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”41Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded.42And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.
Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.43And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
