| 1On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes. | 1So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. |
| 2As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs. | 2When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. |
| 3This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains. | 3This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. |
| 4Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him. | 4Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. |
| 5Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones. | 5Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. |
| 6When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. | 6When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. |
| 7And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!” | 7With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” |
| 8For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!” | 8For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” |
| 9“What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” | 9Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” |
| 10And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region. | 10Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. |
| 11There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. | 11There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. |
| 12So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” | 12“Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” |
| 13He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. | 13So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. |
| 14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. | 14The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. |
| 15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. | 15A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. |
| 16Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs. | 16Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. |
| 17And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region. | 17And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. |
| 18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him. | 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. |
| 19But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.” | 19But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” |
| 20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed. | 20So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. | 21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea. | 21Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. |
| 22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet | 22Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, |
| 23and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.” | 23pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” |
| 24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him. | 24Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. |
| 25And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. | 25A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. |
| 26She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse. | 26She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. |
| 27When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. | 27She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. |
| 28For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.” | 28For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” |
| 29Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. | 29Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. |
| 30At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?” | 30Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” |
| 31His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” | 31His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” |
| 32But He kept looking around to see who had done this. | 32But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. |
| 33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth. | 33Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. |
| 34“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.” | 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” |
| 35While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?” | 35While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” |
| 36But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.” | 36But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” |
| 37And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. | 37Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). |
| 38When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly. | 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. |
| 39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.” | 39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” |
| 40And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child. | 40The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. |
| 41Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” | 41Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” |
| 42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded. | 42And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. |
| 43Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat. | 43Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. |
