On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.1Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.
As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.2As soon as He got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met Him.
This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.3He lived in the tombs. No one was able to restrain him anymore--even with chains--
Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.4because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.5And always, night and day, he was crying out among the tombs and in the mountains and cutting himself with stones.
When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before Him.
And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”7And he cried out with a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, don't torment me!"
For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”8For He had told him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
“What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”9"What is your name?" He asked him." My name is Legion," he answered Him, "because we are many."
And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.10And he kept begging Him not to send them out of the region.
There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.11Now a large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside.
So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”12The demons begged Him, "Send us to the pigs, so we may enter them."
He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.13And He gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.14The men who tended them ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed by the legion, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.16The eyewitnesses described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and told about the pigs.
And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.17Then they began to beg Him to leave their region.
As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him.
But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”19But He would not let him; instead, He told him, "Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you."
So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.20So he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.
When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.21When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea.
A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet
and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”23and kept begging Him, "My little daughter is at death's door. Come and lay Your hands on her so she can get well and live."
So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against Him.
And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.25A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years
She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.26had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse.
When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.27Having heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His robe.
For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”28For she said, "If I can just touch His robes, I'll be made well!"
Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.29Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction.
At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”30At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My robes?"
His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”31His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, Who touched Me?'"
But He kept looking around to see who had done this.32So He was looking around to see who had done this.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth.
“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”34"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction."
While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”35While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?"
But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”36But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid. Only believe."
And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.37He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James's brother.
When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.38They came to the leader's house, and He saw a commotion--people weeping and wailing loudly.
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”39He went in and said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."
And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.40They started laughing at Him, but He put them all outside. He took the child's father, mother, and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was.
Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”41Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded.42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was 12 years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.
Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.43Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and said that she should be given something to eat.
