Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. | 1As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. |
So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. | 2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so." |
And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. | 3The high priests kept accusing him of many things. |
Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!” | 4So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!" |
But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply. | 5But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished. |
Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing. | 6At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested. |
And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. | 7Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion. |
So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom. | 8So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did. |
“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked. | 9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?" |
For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over. | 10because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy. |
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead. | 11But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead. |
So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?” | 12So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call 'the King of the Jews'?" |
And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!” | 13"Crucify him!" they shouted back. |
“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!” | 14"Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!" |
And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified. | 15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified. |
Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together. | 16The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard. |
They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head. | 17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head. |
And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” | 18They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!" |
They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him. | 19They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him. |
After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him. | 20When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him. |
Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. | 21They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross. |
They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull. | 22They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place. |
There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. | 23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it. |
And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take. | 24Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get. |
It was the third hour when they crucified Him. | 25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. |
And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. | 26The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews." |
Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left. | 27They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left. |
And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, | 29Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days— |
come down from the cross and save Yourself!” | 30save yourself and come down from the cross!" |
In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! | 31In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself! |
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him. | 32Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him. |
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. | 33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. |
At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” | 34At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?") |
When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.” | 35When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!" |
And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” | 36So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!" |
But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. | 37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. |
And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. | 38The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. |
When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” | 39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!" |
And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. | 40Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome. |
These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him. | 41They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too. |
Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), | 42It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening, |
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. | 43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. |
Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. | 44Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead. |
When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. | 45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse. |
So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. | 46Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. |
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed. | 47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid. |
