And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. | 1David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. |
He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, | 2He sang: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; |
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. | 3my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. |
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. | 4I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. |
“For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me; | 5“The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me. |
the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 6The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. |
“In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears. | 7But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears. |
“Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry. | 8“Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger. |
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. | 9Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. |
He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. | 10He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. |
He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind. | 11Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds. |
Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. | 13A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth. |
The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. | 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. |
And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused. |
Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. | 16Then at the command of the LORD, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. |
“He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. | 17“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. | 18He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 19They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me. |
He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. | 20He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. |
“The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. | 21The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. | 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. |
For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. | 23I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. |
I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. | 24I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. |
And the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. | 25The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. |
“With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; | 26“To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. |
with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. | 27To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. |
You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. | 28You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them. |
For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. | 29O LORD, you are my lamp. The LORD lights up my darkness. |
For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. | 30In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. |
This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. | 31“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. |
“For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? | 32For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? |
This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. | 33God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect. |
He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. | 34He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. |
He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 35He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. |
You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great. | 36You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great. |
You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; | 37You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. |
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. | 38“I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered. |
I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. | 39I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet. |
For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. | 40You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. |
You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. | 41You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. |
They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. | 42They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer. |
I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. | 43I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt. |
“You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. | 44“You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. |
Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. | 45Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit. |
Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses. | 46They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. |
“The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, | 47“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! |
the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, | 48He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me |
who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence. | 49and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. |
“For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. | 50For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. |
Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.” | 51You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.” |
