King James BibleInternational Standard Version
And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.1As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."
And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.3The high priests kept accusing him of many things.
And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.4So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"
But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.5But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished.
Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.6At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.
And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.7Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion.
And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.8So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.
But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.10because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy.
But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.11But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.
And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?12So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call 'the King of the Jews'?"
And they cried out again, Crucify him.13"Crucify him!" they shouted back.
Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.14"Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"
And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.16The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard.
And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head.
And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!18They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"
And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.19They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him.
And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.20When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.
And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.21They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.
And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.22They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place.
And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it.
And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.24Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get.
And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.26The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.27They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left.
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.28
And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,29Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—
Save thyself, and come down from the cross.30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.31In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!
Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.32Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.
And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?34At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")
And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.35When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"
And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.36So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"
And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.38The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"
There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;40Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome.
(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.41They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.
And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,42It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,
Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.44Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.
And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.
And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.46Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.
