Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.1Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”2So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He replied, "You say so."
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.3Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.
Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”4So Pilate asked him again, "Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!"
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.5But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.6During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.
And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.7A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection.
Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.8Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.
But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”9So Pilate asked them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.10(For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”12So Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call king of the Jews?"
So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”13They shouted back, "Crucify him!"
Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”14Pilate asked them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted more insistently, "Crucify him!"
So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.15Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.16So the soldiers led him into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort.
And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,17They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18They began to salute him: "Hail, king of the Jews!"
Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.20When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.21The soldiers forced a passerby to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country (he was the father of Alexander and Rufus).
And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.22They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which is translated, "Place of the Skull").
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take.
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.25It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26The inscription of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.27And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”28
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,29Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.31In the same way even the chief priests--together with the experts in the law--were mocking him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.32Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33Now when it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”34Around three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”35When some of the bystanders heard it they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah!"
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”36Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah will come to take him down!"
And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.37But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and breathed his last.
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38And the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom.
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”39Now when the centurion, who stood in front of him, saw how he died, he said, "Truly this man was God's Son!"
There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,40There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.41When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there too.
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42Now when evening had already come, since it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.
So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.45When Pilate was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.46After Joseph bought a linen cloth and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was placed.
