New King James VersionNew Living Translation
Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.1Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council —met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”2Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.3Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,
Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”4and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.5But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.6Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner—anyone the people requested.
And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.7One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.8The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”9“Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.
For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.10(For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.11But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”12Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”
So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”13They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”14“Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.15So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified. The Soldiers Mock Jesus
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.16The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.
And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,17They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.
and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.19And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.20When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified. The Crucifixion
Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.21A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)
And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.22And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.23They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.24Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each piece.
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.25It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.
And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.27Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”28
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,29The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.
save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”30Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.31The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.32Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him. The Death of Jesus
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”34Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”35Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”36One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”
And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.37Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”39When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”
There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,40Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph ), and Salome.
who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.41They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there. The Burial of Jesus
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached,
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.)
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.44Pilate couldn’t believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet.
So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.45The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body.
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.46Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus’ body was laid.
