| 1After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death. | 1Two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. |
| 2But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.” | 2For they said, "Not during the feast, so there won't be a riot among the people." |
| 3And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. | 3Now while Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of costly aromatic oil from pure nard. After breaking open the jar, she poured it on his head. |
| 4But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? | 4But some who were present indignantly said to one another, "Why this waste of expensive ointment? |
| 5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply. | 5It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor!" So they spoke angrily to her. |
| 6But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. | 6But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a good service for me. |

| 43And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. | 43Right away, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him came a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law and elders. |
| 44Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.” | 44(Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard.") |

| 53And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. | 53Then they led Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests and elders and experts in the law came together. |
| 54But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. | 54And Peter had followed him from a distance, up to the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the guards and warming himself by the fire. |
| 55Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. | 55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything. |
| 56For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. | 56Many gave false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree. |
| 57Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, | 57Some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: |
| 58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” | 58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands and in three days build another not made with hands.'" |
| 59But not even then did their testimony agree. | 59Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree. |
| 60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” | 60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?" |
| 61But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” | 61But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" |
| 62Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” | 62"I am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven." |
| 63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? | 63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "Why do we still need witnesses? |

| 69And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” | 69When the slave girl saw him, she began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them." |
| 70But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.” | 70But he denied it again. | 71Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!” | 71Then he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, "I do not know this man you are talking about!" |
| 72A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept. | 72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept. |
