1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me: The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me:
2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’? “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? “What do you <i>people</i> mean by using this proverb about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers eat sour grapes, But <i>it is</i> the children’s teeth <i>that</i> have become blunt’? “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “’The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?
3 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. As I live, declares the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. <i>As</i> I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have <i>occasion</i> any more to use this proverb in Israel. As I live,” declares the Lord GOD, “you certainly are not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore. “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
4 Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.
5 Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right: “If a man is righteous and does what is just and right— But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, “But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness, “Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.
6 He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period. if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman in her time of menstrual impurity, <i>And</i> hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, <i>if</i> he does not eat at the mountain <i>shrines</i> or raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period— He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.
7 He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing. does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, commits no robbery, gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, And hath not oppressed any, <i>but</i> hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; and <i>if</i> a man does not oppress <i>anyone, but</i> restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, <i>but</i> gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. 8 He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes TRUE justice between men. does not lend at interest or take any profit, withholds his hand from injustice, executes true justice between man and man, He <i>that</i> hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, <i>that</i> hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, <i>and if</i> he does not lend <i>money</i> at interest or take interest, <i>if</i> he keeps his hand from injustice <i>and</i> executes true justice between one person and another, He does not lend to them at interest or take a profit from them. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between two parties.
9 He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD. walks in my statutes, and keeps my rules by acting faithfully—he is righteous; he shall surely live, declares the Lord GOD. Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he <i>is</i> just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD. <i>if</i> he walks in My statutes and keeps My ordinances so as to deal faithfully—he is righteous <i>and</i> will certainly live,” declares the Lord GOD. He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD.
10 Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things, “If he fathers a son who is violent, a shedder of blood, who does any of these things If he beget a son <i>that is</i> a robber, a shedder of blood, and <i>that</i> doeth the like to <i>any</i> one of these <i>things</i>, “However, he may father a violent son who sheds blood, and does any one of these things to a brother “Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things
11 though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife. (though he himself did none of these things), who even eats upon the mountains, defiles his neighbor’s wife, And that doeth not any of those <i>duties</i>, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife, (though he himself did not do any of these things), that is, he even eats at the mountain <i>shrines,</i> and defiles his neighbor’s wife, (though the father has done none of them): “He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor’s wife.
12 He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery and does not restore a pledge. 13 He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head. lends at interest, and takes profit; shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself. Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. lends <i>money</i> at interest and takes interest; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he shall certainly be put to death; his blood will be on himself. He lends at interest and takes a profit. Will such a man live? 14 Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise: “Now suppose this man fathers a son who sees all the sins that his father has done; he sees, and does not do likewise: Now, lo, <i>if</i> he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, “Now behold, he has fathered a son who saw all his father’s sins which he committed, but he has seen <i>them</i> and does not do likewise. “But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:

17 He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live. withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no interest or profit, obeys my rules, and walks in my statutes; he shall not die for his father’s iniquity; he shall surely live. <i>That</i> hath taken off his hand from the poor, <i>that</i> hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. he keeps his hand from the poor, does not take <i>any kind of</i> interest <i>on loans, but</i> executes My ordinances, <i>and</i> walks in My statutes; he will not die for his father’s guilt, he will certainly live. He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor and takes no interest or profit from them. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live.
18 As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people. As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity. <i>As for</i> his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did <i>that</i> which <i>is</i> not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity. 19 Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live. “Yet you say, ‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, <i>and</i> hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. “Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not suffer <i>the punishment</i> for the father’s guilt?’ When the son has practiced justice and righteousness <i>and</i> has kept all My statutes and done them, he shall certainly live. “Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.
20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. The person who sins will die. A son will not suffer <i>the punishment</i> for the father’s guilt, nor will a father suffer <i>the punishment</i> for the son’s guilt; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die. “But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. “But if the wicked person turns from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. “But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.
22 None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live. None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. All his offenses which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his righteousness which he has practiced, he will live. None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live.
23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live? Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: <i>and</i> not that he should return from his ways, and live? Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord GOD, “rather than that he would turn from his ways and live? Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
24 But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die. But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die. But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, <i>and</i> doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked <i>man</i> doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. “But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice <i>and</i> does according to all the abominations that the wicked person does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. “But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.
25 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, house of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed. When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. When a righteous <i>man</i> turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice and dies because of it, for his injustice which he has committed he dies. If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.
27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Again, when the wicked <i>man</i> turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. But when a wicked person turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.
28 Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Since he understood and turned away from all his offenses which he had committed, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.
29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? But the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Are My ways not right, house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right? Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall. “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn <i>yourselves</i> from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. “Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord GOD. “Repent and turn away from all your offenses, so that wrongdoing does not become a stumbling block to you. “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.
31 Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel? Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Hurl away from you all your offenses which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why should you die, house of Israel? Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?
32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live! For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.” For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn <i>yourselves</i>, and live ye. For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord GOD. “Therefore, repent and live!” For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!
