Berean Study Bible Reproof of False ProphetsEzekiel received God’s message while living among the Jewish exiles in Babylon following the deportation of 597 BC. Though Jerusalem still stood at this point, the nation faced coming judgment because of persistent idolatry and rebellion. God continued to speak through His appointed prophet, exposing the lies of false prophets who promised peace and security despite the people’s sin. Ezekiel’s authority rested not on personal opinion or popular expectation, but on the word God gave him to proclaim. God’s revelation through the prophets ultimately points to His fullest self-disclosure in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Son of man, God addresses Ezekiel as a human servant, set apart to speak His words to a rebellious people. The title underscores the difference between the prophet and the Lord whose message he bears. Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”… prophesy against the prophets of Israel Ezekiel is sent to condemn men who claimed spiritual authority while misleading the nation. During the exile, their assurances of safety and swift deliverance contradicted God’s announced judgment. Ezk 22:28 Her prophets whitewash these deeds by false visions… who are now prophesying. Their false messages were not a past failure but an active influence among the people, feeding hopes that Jerusalem would escape destruction and that the exiles would soon return. Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule… Tell those who prophesy out of their own imagination: These prophets spoke from their own desires and inventions rather than from revelation given by God. They used the prophetic office to offer the messages people wanted to hear. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… Hear the word of the LORD! The false prophets themselves must answer to God’s authoritative word. Ezekiel’s message exposes their claims and declares the judgment awaiting those who speak falsely in the Lord’s name. Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim… This is what the Lord GOD says: Ezekiel speaks with the authority of the sovereign Lord, not from personal opinion or imagination. The coming judgment against false prophets is God’s own declaration. Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you… Woe to the foolish prophets God pronounces judgment on prophets who claimed to speak for Him while lacking the wisdom that comes from submission to His word. Their messages gave false confidence to a people already facing the consequences of rebellion. Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution… who follow their own spirit Rather than receiving God’s revelation, these men proclaimed ideas born from their own desires, ambitions, and assumptions. They presented human invention as divine guidance. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… yet have seen nothing. Their claimed visions had no source in God. Though they spoke as prophets, they had received no true revelation and were leading the people away from repentance and obedience. Lam 2:14 The visions of your prophets were empty and deceptive;… Your prophets, O Israel, Israel’s false prophets claimed divine authority while contradicting God’s warnings of judgment. During the Babylonian exile, they reassured the people that Jerusalem would be secure and that disaster would soon pass. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… are like foxes Like foxes feeding and sheltering in devastated places, they were cunning and self-serving. Rather than protecting God’s people or calling them to repentance, they exploited their fear and confusion. Sng 2:15 Catch for us the foxes—the little foxes… among the ruins. The ruins reflect the devastation already brought upon the land and the greater judgment still approaching Jerusalem. The false prophets prospered amid Israel’s spiritual collapse instead of helping restore faithfulness to God. Lam 5:18 because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate… You did not go up to the gaps False prophets had not confronted Israel’s sin or sought to protect the people from the judgment approaching Jerusalem. Like defenders who failed to occupy breaches in a city wall, they abandoned their responsibility when the nation was most exposed. Ezk 22:30 I searched for a man among them to repair the wall… or restore the wall around the house of Israel Rather than strengthening the people through faithful instruction and calls to repentance, they left Israel without moral and spiritual defense. Their messages of peace concealed the nation’s rebellion and deepened its vulnerability. Amo 9:11 “In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David.”… so that it would stand in the battle The coming battle was the Babylonian assault and the Lord’s judgment against Jerusalem. Because the prophets had misled the people, Israel was unprepared to endure the crisis. 2Ch 20:17 You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions… on the Day of the LORD. The Day of the LORD had arrived in the form of divine judgment upon Judah. It also anticipates the final day when God will judge all rebellion and establish His righteous rule. Jol 1:15 Alas for the day! For the Day of the LORD is near… They see false visions Israel’s false prophets claimed insight from God while inventing messages that contradicted His warnings of coming judgment. During Jerusalem’s final years, they reassured the people that peace and security would continue, encouraging resistance to God’s call for repentance. Ezk 12:24 For there will be no more false visions,… and speak lying divinations. Their predictions were not revelations from the LORD but lying divinations—claims of future or hidden knowledge through means not sanctioned by God—designed to gain influence. By presenting imagined outcomes as certain, they strengthened the people’s confidence in false hopes. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… They claim, ‘Thus declares the LORD,’ They invoked the LORD’s name to give their words divine authority. Their deception was especially serious because they represented their own desires and inventions as God’s will. Jer 23:31 “Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets… when the LORD did not send them; God had not appointed or authorized these men. Unlike Ezekiel, who was commissioned to speak God’s message despite opposition, they spoke without divine instruction. Jer 23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run… yet they wait for the fulfillment of their message. Though their words were false, they expected events to validate them. Their confidence could not change the outcome: Jerusalem would fall as God had declared. Deu 18:21-22 You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message… Haven’t you seen a false vision God confronts Israel’s false prophets, who claimed divine visions while speaking from their own imaginations. Their messages gave the people false confidence and obscured God’s coming judgment. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… and spoken a lying divination Rather than receiving revelation from the Lord, they produced deceptive predictions and pretended to possess supernatural knowledge. Such practices resembled the forbidden divination, the seeking of knowledge of the future or unknown by supernatural means, of surrounding nations and led Israel away from God’s truth. Ezk 21:29 while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations… when you proclaim, ‘Thus declares the LORD,’ They invoked the Lord’s name to give their words authority. What true prophets spoke only at God’s command, these men falsely claimed as divine revelation. Jer 28:2-4 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:… even though I have not spoken? The Lord plainly denies having sent or authorized them. Their words carried no divine authority, and their deception made them accountable for misleading His people. Jer 23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run… Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: God announces His own judgment against those who claimed to speak in His name. The title Lord GOD affirms His supreme authority and His covenant rule over Israel. 1Ki 22:23 So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit… Because you have uttered vain words Israel’s false prophets offered empty assurances of peace while Jerusalem moved toward the judgment God had warned of through Ezekiel. Their messages encouraged the people to disregard God’s call to repentance. Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule… and seen false visions, Their supposed revelations did not come from the Lord. They presented inventions of their own hearts as divine guidance, deceiving a nation already resisting God’s word. Ezk 12:24 For there will be no more false visions,… I am against you, declares the Lord GOD. God Himself stood opposed to these prophets for misrepresenting Him and leading His people astray. Their authority, promises, and influence would not protect them from the judgment they denied. Nam 2:13 “Behold, I am against you,” declares the LORD of Hosts.… My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and speak lying divinations. God declares His judgment against prophets who claimed divine authority while inventing messages that contradicted His word. Their deception gave the people false confidence and encouraged rebellion rather than repentance. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… They will not belong to the council of My people These false prophets would lose all standing among Israel. Though they had presented themselves as spiritual leaders, God would separate them from the community they had misled. Psa 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,… or be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, Their names would no longer be counted in the register of the house of Israel, the genealogical record of those belonging to the covenant community. This judgment marked their removal from the privileges, security, and inheritance associated with Israel. Ezr 2:62 These men searched for their family records… nor will they enter the land of Israel. God would deny them a place in the land promised to His people. Like the unbelieving generation in the wilderness, they would forfeit the blessing they had presumed upon. Num 14:30 Surely none of you will enter the land in which I swore… Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD. By exposing and judging the false prophets, God would show Israel that He alone speaks truth and rules over His people. Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.… Because they have led My people astray, False prophets bore real guilt for directing Israel away from the Lord. Rather than calling the people to repentance, they reinforced rebellion and encouraged confidence in lies. Jer 50:6 My people are lost sheep; their shepherds have led… saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, As Babylon’s threat drew near, these leaders denied the coming judgment and assured Jerusalem that disaster would not fall. Their message contradicted God’s warnings and left the people unprepared for the consequences of their sin. Jer 6:14 They dress the wound of My people with very little care,… and whitewashing any flimsy wall that is built, Their promises were like a weak wall covered to appear sound. Outward reassurance could not strengthen a nation weakened by idolatry, injustice, and disobedience. When God’s judgment came, the false security they promoted would collapse. Act 23:3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you,… tell those whitewashing the wall that it will fall. Israel’s false prophets concealed the nation’s spiritual corruption by promising safety and peace despite persistent rebellion against God. Their message resembled a weak wall covered with fresh plaster: attractive on the surface but unable to endure pressure. God would expose the emptiness of their assurances and bring down the false security they had built. Ezk 22:28 Her prophets whitewash these deeds by false visions… Rain will come in torrents, God’s judgment would strike with overwhelming force, like a violent storm that no human effort could restrain. Jerusalem’s coming destruction would prove that the prophets’ promises of peace were false. Ezk 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed.… I will send hailstones plunging down, The hailstones portray the severity of God’s direct intervention against sin. Judgment would not be accidental or merely political; it would come under God’s sovereign hand against those who had deceived His people. Exo 9:23-25 So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven,… and a windstorm will burst forth. The storm completes the picture of total collapse. Neither the false prophets nor those who trusted them could preserve the wall of lies when God brought the consequences of Judah’s rebellion. Jer 23:19-20 Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with fury… Surely when the wall has fallen, Jerusalem’s false security would collapse under Babylon’s judgment. The prophets who promised peace had built confidence on lies rather than on God’s word. Isa 30:13-14 This iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail… you will not be asked, Their failure would be plain to all. When the city fell, no defense or explanation could conceal the emptiness of their claims. Ezk 12:22-25 Son of man, what is this proverb that you have… ‘Where is the whitewash with which you covered it?’ The assurances of peace had only hidden Israel’s rebellion and coming judgment. What appeared secure would be exposed as weak and deceptive. Mat 23:27-28 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!… Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Ezekiel speaks with divine authority, delivering God’s judgment against the false prophets who promised peace while Jerusalem stood under imminent danger. Amo 3:8 The lion has roared—who will not fear?… In My wrath I will release a windstorm, God compares His coming judgment to a violent storm that no human defense can withstand. The false security built by the prophets will be swept away. Jer 23:19 Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with fury… and in My anger torrents of rain and hail will fall The judgment will be overwhelming and unavoidable, exposing the lies that had persuaded the people to trust in safety rather than repent before the Lord. Ezk 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed.… with destructive fury. God’s anger is directed against deliberate deception and rebellion. The destruction of the false prophets’ message will reveal that the Lord alone has spoken truth. Isa 28:2 Behold, the Lord has one who is strong and mighty.… I will tear down the wall you whitewashed The false prophets had given Jerusalem a deceptive appearance of safety, like a weak wall covered to hide its defects. Their messages of peace concealed the nation’s rebellion and the certainty of coming judgment. Act 23:3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you,… and level it to the ground, so that its foundation is exposed. God would expose the emptiness of their assurances. What appeared secure had no sound foundation because it rested on lies rather than obedience to the LORD. Mic 1:6 Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble… The city will fall, and you will be destroyed within it. Jerusalem’s destruction would demonstrate that the false prophets could not save those who trusted them. This was fulfilled when Babylon captured and destroyed the city in 586 BC. Ezk 33:21 In the twelfth year of our exile, on the fifth day… Then you will know that I am the LORD. Through judgment, the people would recognize the LORD’s authority, holiness, and faithfulness to His word. Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,… And after I have vented My wrath against the wall and against those who whitewashed it, God’s judgment falls on both the false security promised to Judah and the prophets who created it. The wall pictures the nation’s confidence in deceptive assurances of peace, while the whitewash represents messages that concealed spiritual corruption and approaching danger. Jerusalem’s leaders and false prophets ignored God’s warnings as Babylon’s invasion drew near. Act 23:3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you,… I will say to you: ‘The wall is gone, and so are those who whitewashed it— The fall of Jerusalem would expose the emptiness of their promises. The false prophets could not preserve the city or protect the people from the consequences of rebellion. God would remove both the deceptive message and those responsible for spreading it. Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,… those prophets of Israel Those prophets of Israel were false prophets in Ezekiel’s day who claimed divine authority while speaking from their own imaginations. Rather than confronting Judah’s idolatry and rebellion, they reinforced the nation’s self-deception. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… who prophesied to Jerusalem This refers to the false prophets who prophesied concerning Jerusalem, promising peace when Babylon’s final assault was imminent. Jer 23:14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen… and saw a vision of peace for her They promised Jerusalem safety and stability, denying that God’s judgment would fall on the city. Their visions of peace directly contradicted the warnings God had given through His true prophets. Jer 14:13 “Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets…”… when there was no peace, Ezekiel exposed the false prophets’ message as a lie. They promised peace for Jerusalem when there was no peace, even though the city’s continued sin had brought it under God’s judgment and Babylon’s destruction was approaching. Jer 6:14 They dress the wound of My people with very little care,… declares the Lord GOD.’ This confirms that the judgment against these prophets came from the sovereign God, whose word would prove true. Ezk 11:5 And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me…
Reproof of False ProphetessesGod again addresses Ezekiel by the title that reminds him of his human weakness and his calling to speak God’s message to Israel. Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”… set your face against Ezekiel was to confront them openly and firmly, declaring God’s opposition to their deception. Ezk 25:2 Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites… the daughters of your people Certain women among the exiles claimed prophetic authority and influenced others through false visions and practices. Jer 14:17 My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease… who prophesy out of their own imagination. Their messages did not come from the Lord but from their own desires and inventions. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… Prophesy against them Ezekiel was commanded to expose their false claims and announce God’s judgment against them. Ezk 6:2 Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel…… and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: Ezekiel speaks under God’s authority, announcing judgment not from personal opinion but from the Lord Himself. Deu 18:18-20 I will raise up for them a prophet like you… Woe to the women who sew magic charms on their wrists God condemns women who practiced false prophecy and occult deception, using ritual objects to gain influence over others. Deu 18:10-12 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son… and make veils for the heads of people of every height, Their practices, including veils symbolizing deception or concealment, reached people of every height throughout the community, regardless of status or position, and were used to conceal deception beneath claims of spiritual insight. Isa 3:16-23 The LORD also says: “Because the daughters of Zion… in order to ensnare their souls. Rather than leading people to the Lord, they trapped them in fear, false hope, and spiritual bondage. Pro 23:27-28 For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an adulteress… Will you ensnare the souls of My people but preserve your own? These women sought personal advantage while exploiting those whom God claimed as His own. Their attempts to secure themselves would not protect them from His judgment. Ezk 34:2-4 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel… You have profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. False prophetesses treated the honor of God as something to be traded for small payments of food. In a time of hardship, barley and bread had value, yet such rewards were insignificant compared with the responsibility of speaking God’s word faithfully. Their ministry was driven by personal gain rather than obedience, and they used God’s name to give authority to messages He had not spoken. Mic 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach… By lying to My people who would listen, They found an audience among those willing to hear reassuring words instead of God’s warning of judgment. Their messages encouraged false security and kept the people from repentance. By claiming divine authority for their inventions, they led Israel away from the truth at the very time the nation needed to heed God’s call to turn from sin. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… you have killed those who should not have died Their deceit brought ruin upon people who might otherwise have responded to God’s warning. Those persuaded by false promises of peace were unprepared for the judgment that came upon Jerusalem and Judah. The prophets bore real guilt because their words helped lead others toward destruction. Psa 94:21 They band together against the righteous… and spared those who should not have lived. They also strengthened the wicked by assuring them that they would escape judgment. Rather than exposing sin and calling for repentance, they gave the guilty confidence to continue in rebellion. God condemns such corruption because it overturns His justice, condemning the innocent while comforting those who persist in evil. Pro 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous… Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: God announces His own judgment against the false prophetesses of Jerusalem. Their practices and messages stood under His authority and would not escape His scrutiny. Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… See, I am against the magic charms The women used occult objects and rituals to influence or deceive others. Such practices violated God’s law and drew people away from trusting Him. Mic 5:12 I will cut the sorceries from your hand… with which you ensnare souls like birds, Their promises of safety and favorable outcomes trapped people in false hope. Like birds caught in a net, their victims were held by deception and fear. Psa 124:7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare… and I will tear them from your arms. God would remove the instruments of their influence and end their power over those they had misled. Jer 31:11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and redeemed him… So I will free the souls you have ensnared like birds. The Lord would deliver His people from the false prophets’ control, exposing their lies and restoring those they had bound. 2Ti 2:26 Then they will come to their senses and escape… I will also tear off your veils God would expose the false prophetesses who used symbolic acts and deceptive promises to mislead the people. Their practices gave false security to those facing coming judgment. Isa 25:7 On this mountain He will swallow up the shroud… and deliver My people from your hands, The Lord would remove His people from the influence of those who profited from fear, superstition, and lies. Though Judah had embraced deception, God remained determined to judge the deceivers and preserve those who belonged to Him. Ezk 34:10 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against… so that they will no longer be prey in your hands. The false prophetesses treated vulnerable people as objects to exploit, strengthening the wicked while discouraging the righteous. God would end their power to ensnare and manipulate the nation. Ezk 34:22 I will save My flock, and they will no longer be prey.… Then you will know that I am the LORD. The judgment of the false prophetesses would demonstrate that the Lord alone speaks truth and rules over Israel. Their exposure would confirm the certainty of His word and the reality of His authority. Ezk 6:7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know… Because you have disheartened the righteous with your lies, The false prophetesses troubled those who sought to remain faithful to the Lord, burdening them with messages God had not given. Their deception weakened confidence in God’s word and disturbed the spiritual health of the community. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… even though I have caused them no grief, The sorrow placed upon the righteous did not come from God’s judgment or command. The Lord had not spoken against them as the false prophets claimed, and He rejects the lies that misrepresented His dealings with His people. Ezk 18:32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death,… and because you have encouraged the wicked not to turn from their evil ways to save their lives, By offering false assurances of peace and safety, these women strengthened the wicked in their rebellion. Rather than warning them of coming judgment and calling them to repentance, they gave them confidence to continue in sin, placing their lives in danger. Ezk 18:21-23 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins… therefore you will no longer see false visions or practice divination. God announced judgment against the women who claimed supernatural insight while deceiving His people. Their visions and divination contradicted God’s revealed will and encouraged false security in Jerusalem despite the coming Babylonian judgment. By ending their deceptive practices, God would expose their claims and remove their influence. Mic 3:6-7 Therefore night will come over you without visions… I will deliver My people from your hands. The false prophets had ensnared many in spiritual deception, but the Lord would act to rescue those whom they had misled. His judgment would demonstrate that no human scheme, occult practice, or false message could prevent Him from carrying out His purposes for Israel. Ezk 34:27 The trees of the field will give their fruit,… Then you will know that I am the LORD.” The downfall of the deceivers and the deliverance of God’s people would reveal the Lord’s authority, faithfulness, and holiness. Israel would learn through judgment that He alone speaks truth and rules over the nation. Ezk 6:7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
