Psalms 24

The Earth Is the LORD’s

A Psalm of David.

David wrote as Israel’s shepherd-king, whose reign established Jerusalem as the nation’s political and worship center. His experience as a shepherd, warrior, fugitive, and ruler shaped his confidence in the Lord’s rule over every earthly power. The psalm prepares worshipers to approach the holy King who dwells in Zion.

The earth is the LORD’s,

The God of Israel possesses the whole earth because He created it. No land, kingdom, ruler, or people exists outside His authority. Israel’s covenant with the Lord did not make Him merely a national deity; He is the Maker and rightful King of all creation.

and the fullness thereof,

Every creature, harvest, resource, and treasure belongs to God. Psalm 50:10–12 likewise declares that the animals, forests, and cattle are His. Human beings receive the earth’s abundance as stewards and remain accountable to the One who provides it.

the world and all who dwell therein.

Every person belongs to God, regardless of nation, lineage, or status. Paul proclaimed the same truth in Athens, teaching that God made every nation and governs the boundaries and seasons of their existence (Acts 17:26). The Lord’s universal ownership anticipates Christ’s rightful reign over all nations and the day when the kingdoms of the world become His kingdom (Revelation 11:15).

For He has founded it upon the seas

God created the earth and set boundaries for the waters, demonstrating His authority over the chaos often associated with the sea in the ancient world. Genesis 1:9–10 records God’s gathering of the waters so that dry land appeared, bringing order and fruitfulness by His command. The world rests securely because its Creator rules every force that seems untamed or threatening.

and established it upon the waters.

The Lord continually sustains the creation He established. He set limits for the sea, as Proverbs 8:29 declares, and no flood, storm, or deep can exceed His decree. Jesus revealed the same divine authority when He commanded the wind and waves to be still (Mark 4:39). His power over the waters points to His work of bringing life, peace, and new creation out of judgment, death, and disorder.

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?

Mount Zion, the site of the temple in Jerusalem, represented the appointed place where the holy God dwelt among His covenant people. To ascend to worship was not merely a physical journey but an approach to the Lord’s presence. Israel’s worship required reverence, cleansing, and obedience because God is holy. Isaiah foresaw a day when nations would go up to the mountain of the LORD to learn His ways and walk in His paths (Isaiah 2:2–3).

Who may stand in His holy place?

The holy place belonged to God and could not be entered casually. Priests served there under God’s commands, and the people approached through the sacrifices and cleansing He provided. David’s question exposes humanity’s need for holiness before God. The following verses identify clean hands, a pure heart, truthful worship, and freedom from idolatry as marks of one fit to draw near. Ultimately, Jesus Christ grants believers access to God through His atoning blood, enabling them to draw near with sincere hearts in full assurance of faith (Hebrews 10:19–22).

Psa 15:2 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…
Exo 3:5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals”…
Jos 5:15 The Commander of the LORD’s army replied,…

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

Those who approach the holy King must possess integrity in conduct and motive. Clean hands portray righteous deeds, while a pure heart includes sincere thoughts, desires, and will. Israel’s priests washed before serving at the sanctuary (Exodus 30:19–21), yet outward cleansing could never substitute for a life devoted to God. Jesus likewise declared that the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8).

Jas 4:8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.…
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Psa 15:2 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…

who does not lift up his soul to an idol

Worship and deepest allegiance belong to the Lord alone. Israel repeatedly faced the lure of surrounding nations’ gods, but the first commandment forbade every rival devotion (Exodus 20:3). Idolatry includes any object of trust, love, or obedience raised above God. The worshiper welcomed into God’s presence is not divided between the Lord and false gods.

Ezk 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts…
Exo 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods before Me.…
1Jn 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

or swear deceitfully.

Truthful speech reflects reverence for God, whose name often stood behind an oath. False testimony injured neighbors and dishonored the God invoked as witness (Exodus 20:16). Jesus called His followers to plain and dependable honesty, so that their yes would be yes and their no, no (Matthew 5:33–37).

Lev 19:12 You must not swear falsely by My name…
Zec 8:17 do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor…
Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth…

He will receive blessing from the LORD

The worshiper who approaches God with clean hands, a pure heart, truthful speech, and undivided devotion receives favor from the covenant LORD. God alone grants the fullness of life, peace, protection, and fellowship that no human achievement can secure. The promise recalls God’s covenant with Abraham, whom God blessed in order that all nations might be blessed through his offspring. Obedient faith does not purchase God’s grace, but it marks those who truly seek Him. In Christ, the promised Seed of Abraham, believers receive every spiritual blessing and are brought into God’s presence.

and vindication from the God of his salvation.

God Himself renders the favorable judgment and righteousness His people need. He defends those who belong to Him, delivers them from accusation and oppression, and establishes their standing before Him. Israel’s God is not merely a distant judge but the personal Savior of those who seek His face. The ultimate ground of such vindication is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose righteousness is credited to those who trust in Him and whose saving work secures their final acceptance before God.

Psa 43:1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case…
Isa 50:8 The One who vindicates Me is near. Who will dare?…
Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…

Such is the generation of those who seek Him,

God recognizes a people marked not by ancestry, status, or outward ceremony, but by earnest devotion to Him. Israel had been called to seek the LORD wholeheartedly and to walk in His commands (Deuteronomy 4:29; 10:12–13). Such seeking joins inward faith with obedient life, fitting the clean hands and pure heart described in Psalm 24:3–5. God continues to gather those who desire His kingdom above earthly gain (Matthew 6:33).

Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…
2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…
Psa 22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD…

who seek Your face,

Seeking God’s face is a longing to live before His presence, receive His favor, and know His will. Moses pleaded that God’s presence would go with Israel, for without Him they could not be distinguished from the nations (Exodus 33:14–16). David likewise made seeking the LORD’s face the settled desire of his heart (Psalm 27:8). The blessing of God’s shining face brings peace, mercy, and covenant fellowship (Numbers 6:24–26).

Psa 27:8 My heart said, “Seek His face.” Your face, O LORD,…
2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…
Hos 5:15 Then I will return to My place until they admit their guilt…

O God of Jacob.

The God sought by His people is the covenant God who revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He remained faithful to Jacob despite Jacob’s sin and weakness, met him in exile, preserved him through danger, and changed his name to Israel after Jacob clung to God for blessing (Genesis 28:13–15; 32:24–30). The title recalls God’s enduring faithfulness to His promises and His power to transform those who come to Him.

Lift up your heads, O gates!

Jerusalem’s gates are summoned as though they could rise in honor before the approach of the divine King. City gates represented security, public authority, and the life of the city; their opening signaled welcome rather than resistance. God does not enter as a dependent visitor but as the rightful Lord whose presence sanctifies His people.

Be lifted up, O ancient doors,

The enduring doors of the holy city are called to make way for the One who has chosen Zion as the place associated with His name and worship. The image recalls the joyful reception of the ark of the covenant, the visible sign of God’s covenant presence among Israel. God’s ancient purposes do not grow weak with time; He remains worthy of reverence from every generation.

that the King of Glory may enter!

The King of Glory is the Lord Himself, glorious in holiness, power, and covenant faithfulness. His entrance brings blessing to those who receive Him and judgment to those who oppose His rule. The royal imagery also points forward to Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David, whose entry into Jerusalem displayed His kingly authority and whose return will reveal Him openly as “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16).

Ezk 43:4-5 and the glory of the LORD entered the temple…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph…

Who is this King of Glory?

David calls worshipers to recognize the God entering in triumph as the sovereign Lord of all creation. The King of Glory is the LORD, whose presence sanctified Israel’s worship and whose reign extends over every nation and power. Christian faith recognizes Jesus Christ as the eternal Son who reveals God’s glory and will reign openly as King over all.

The LORD strong and mighty,

The LORD possesses unlimited power and faithfully defends His people. Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, preservation in the wilderness, and victories in the promised land showed that no human ruler or hostile force could withstand Him.

The God of Israel fights for righteousness and accomplishes His purposes against every enemy. Christ’s victory over sin, death, and Satan through His cross and resurrection fulfills the hope of God’s people for a conquering King, and His return will bring His righteous rule to completion.

Jerusalem’s gates are summoned to rise in welcome before Yahweh, the victorious King. Gates represented a city’s strength, authority, and security, yet no earthly defense can remain closed before the Lord who rules heaven and earth.

Be lifted up, O ancient doors,

The enduring doors of the holy city must yield to the God whose kingdom is everlasting. The imagery recalls the Lord’s presence among His people and fittingly anticipates Christ’s royal entrance into Jerusalem and His final return in glory.

that the King of Glory may enter!

The King of Glory is Yahweh, mighty in holiness, power, and salvation. Jesus Christ shares this divine glory as the incarnate Son, the King of kings who entered Jerusalem in humility and will come again in manifest majesty. God’s people are called to receive Him with reverence, faith, and willing obedience.

Ezk 43:4-5 and the glory of the LORD entered the temple…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…
Luk 19:38 “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”…

Who is He, this King of Glory?

The question summons worshipers to recognize the divine Warrior approaching in victory. Psalm 24 portrays the Lord as the Creator of the earth and the holy King welcomed into His dwelling. Israel’s kings possessed limited authority, but God alone rules over heaven, earth, nations, and every power opposed to His purposes.

Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…
Jas 2:1 My brothers, as you hold out your faith…
1Co 2:8 None of the rulers of this age understood it.…

The LORD of Hosts—

The covenant God of Israel commands the armies of heaven and holds all earthly armies under His sovereign authority. David confessed this name when he faced Goliath, trusting the Lord to defend His people and vindicate His own honor. The Lord does not depend upon human strength; all creation stands at His command.

1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…
Isa 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts;…”…
Isa 24:23 The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed;…

He is the King of Glory.

The Lord’s glory is His visible and moral majesty, displayed in creation, judgment, salvation, and His dwelling among His people. The royal welcome of Psalm 24 ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the risen and exalted King, whose return in glory will establish His righteous reign over all nations.
