David Fetches the Ark
(2 Samuel 6:1–4)

1  וַיִּוָּעַ֣ץ (And counseled) דָּוִ֗יד (David) עִם־ (with) שָׂרֵ֧י (the captains) הָאֲלָפִ֛ים (of the thousands) וְהַמֵּא֖וֹת (and of the hundreds), לְכָל־ (with every) נָגִֽיד׃ (leader). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֜יד (David) לְכֹ֣ל׀ (to all) קְהַ֣ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), אִם־ (If) עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם (to you⁺) ט֜וֹב (it is good), וּמִן־ (and from) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God), נִפְרְצָה֙ (breaking forth) נִשְׁלְחָ֞ה (let us send out) עַל־ (to) אַחֵ֣ינוּ (our brothers) הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֗ים (remaining) בְּכֹל֙ (in all) אַרְצ֣וֹת (the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם (and with them) הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים (to the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם (and the Levites) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in their cities) מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ם (and their pasturelands), וְיִקָּבְצ֖וּ (that they may gather together) אֵלֵֽינוּ׃ (to us). 3  וְנָסֵ֛בָּה (And let us bring back) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (of our God) אֵלֵ֑ינוּ (to us), כִּי־ (for) לֹ֥א (not) דְרַשְׁנֻ֖הוּ (we sought Him) בִּימֵ֥י (in the days) שָׁאֽוּל׃ (of Saul).

4  וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ (And said) כָֽל־ (all) הַקָּהָ֖ל (the assembly) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (that they would do) כֵּ֑ן (so), כִּֽי־ (for) יָשַׁ֥ר (was right) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the thing) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) כָל־ (of all) הָעָֽם׃ (the people). 5  וַיַּקְהֵ֤ל (And gathered together) דָּוִיד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) מִן־ (from) שִׁיח֥וֹר (the Shihor) מִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt) וְעַד־ (and as far as) לְב֣וֹא (Lebo-) חֲמָ֑ת (Hamath), לְהָבִיא֙ (to bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) מִקִּרְיַ֖ת (from Kiriath-) יְעָרִֽים׃ (jearim).

6  וַיַּ֨עַל (And went up) דָּוִ֤יד (David) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בַּעֲלָ֔תָה (to Baalah), אֶל־ (to) קִרְיַ֥ת (Kiriath-) יְעָרִ֖ים (jearim)), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) לִיהוּדָ֑ה (was unto Judah), לְהַעֲל֣וֹת (to bring up) מִשָּׁ֗ם (from there) אֵת֩ (-) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ (of God) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (dwelling between) הַכְּרוּבִ֖ים (the cherubim), אֲשֶׁר־ (where) נִקְרָ֥א (is proclaimed) שֵֽׁם׃ (the name). 7  וַיַּרְכִּ֜יבוּ (And they carried) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֤וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) עַל־ (on) עֲגָלָ֣ה (a cart) חֲדָשָׁ֔ה (new) מִבֵּ֖ית (from the house) אֲבִינָדָ֑ב (of Abinadab). וְעֻזָּ֣א (And Uzza) וְאַחְי֔וֹ (and Ahio) נֹהֲגִ֖ים (were driving) בָּעֲגָלָֽה׃ (the cart).

8  וְדָוִ֣יד (And David) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) מְשַׂחֲקִ֛ים (played) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) בְּכָל־ (with all) עֹ֑ז (the might), וּבְשִׁירִ֤ים (and with singing), וּבְכִנֹּרוֹת֙ (and on harps), וּבִנְבָלִ֣ים (and on stringed instruments), וּבְתֻפִּ֔ים (and on tambourines), וּבִמְצִלְתַּ֖יִם (and on cymbals), וּבַחֲצֹצְרֽוֹת׃ (and with the trumpets).

9  וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (And they came) עַד־ (to) גֹּ֣רֶן (the threshing floor) כִּידֹ֑ן (of Chidon), וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (and put forth) עֻזָּ֜א (Uzza) אֶת־ (-) יָד֗וֹ (his hand) לֶאֱחֹז֙ (to hold) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אָר֔וֹן (the ark), כִּ֥י (for) שָֽׁמְט֖וּ (had stumbled) הַבָּקָֽר׃ (the oxen). 10  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֤ף (the anger) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּעֻזָּ֔א (against Uzza), וַיַּכֵּ֕הוּ (and He struck him) עַ֛ל (upon) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׁלַ֥ח (he stretched out) יָד֖וֹ (his hand) עַל־ (upon) הָאָר֑וֹן (the ark), וַיָּ֥מָת (and he died) שָׁ֖ם (there) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

11  וַיִּ֣חַר (And it was displeasing) לְדָוִ֔יד (to David) כִּֽי־ (because) פָרַ֧ץ (broke forth) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) פֶּ֖רֶץ (a breach) בְּעֻזָּ֑א (upon Uzza); וַיִּקְרָ֞א (and he called) לַמָּק֤וֹם (the place) הַהוּא֙ (that) פֶּ֣רֶץ (Perez-) עֻזָּ֔א (uzzah) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

12  וַיִּירָ֤א (And was afraid) דָוִיד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) בַּיּ֥וֹם (day) הַה֖וּא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הֵ֚יךְ (How) אָבִ֣יא (can I bring) אֵלַ֔י (to myself) אֵ֖ת (-) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God)? 13  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) הֵסִ֨יר (would move) דָּוִ֧יד (David) אֶת־ (-) הָאָר֛וֹן (the ark) אֵלָ֖יו (with him) אֶל־ (into) עִ֣יר (the City) דָּוִ֑יד (of David), וַיַּטֵּ֕הוּ (and he stretched it aside) אֶל־ (into) בֵּ֥ית (the house) עֹבֵֽד־ (of Obed-) אֱדֹ֖ם (edom) הַגִּתִּֽי׃ (the Gittite). 14  וַיֵּשֶׁב֩ (And remained) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים (of God) עִם־ (with) בֵּ֨ית (the house) עֹבֵ֥ד (of Obed-) אֱדֹ֛ם (edom) בְּבֵית֖וֹ (in his house) שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (three) חֳדָשִׁ֑ים (months), וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ (and blessed) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) עֹבֵֽד־ (of Obed-) אֱדֹ֖ם (edom) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) לֽוֹ׃פ (unto him).
