The Mighty Men Join David at Ziklag

1  וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these) הַבָּאִ֤ים (were those coming in) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִיד֙ (David) לְצִ֣יקְלַ֔ג (at Ziklag) ע֣וֹד (while) עָצ֔וּר (he was still a fugitive) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from) שָׁא֣וּל (Saul) בֶּן־ (son) קִ֑ישׁ (of Kish) וְהֵ֙מָּה֙ (and they) בַּגִּבּוֹרִ֔ים (among the mighty men) עֹזְרֵ֖י (helpers) הַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (in battle), 2  נֹ֣שְׁקֵי (armed) קֶ֗שֶׁת (with bows), מַיְמִינִ֤ים (using the right hand) וּמַשְׂמִאלִים֙ (and the left) בָּֽאֲבָנִ֔ים (with stones) וּבַחִצִּ֖ים (and with arrows) בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת (with the bow), מֵאֲחֵ֥י (brothers) שָׁא֖וּל (of Saul) מִבִּנְיָמִֽן׃ (from Benjamin).

3  הָרֹ֨אשׁ (The chief) אֲחִיעֶ֜זֶר (was Ahiezer), וְיוֹאָ֗שׁ (and Joash), בְּנֵי֙ (the sons) הַשְּׁמָעָ֣ה (of Shemaah) הַגִּבְעָתִ֔י (the Gibeathite);

וִיזוּאֵל (and Jeziel), וָפֶ֖לֶט (and Pelet) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַזְמָ֑וֶת (of Azmaveth);

וּבְרָכָ֕ה (and Berachah);

וְיֵה֖וּא (and Jehu) הָעֲנְּתֹתִֽי׃ (the Anathothite);

4  וְיִֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה (and Ishmaiah) הַגִּבְעוֹנִ֛י (the Gibeonite), גִּבּ֥וֹר (a mighty man) בַּשְּׁלֹשִׁ֖ים (among the thirty) וְעַל־ (and over) הַשְּׁלֹשִֽׁים׃ (the thirty);

וְיִרְמְיָ֤ה (and Jeremiah), וְיַחֲזִיאֵל֙ (and Jahaziel), וְי֣וֹחָנָ֔ן (and Johanan), וְיוֹזָבָ֖ד (and Jozabad) הַגְּדֵרָתִֽי׃ (the Gederathite);

5  אֶלְעוּזַ֤י (Eluzai), וִירִימוֹת֙ (and Jerimoth), וּבְעַלְיָ֣ה (and Bealiah), וּשְׁמַרְיָ֔הוּ (and Shemariah), וּשְׁפַטְיָ֖הוּ (and Shephatiah) הַחֲרִיפִי׃ (the Haruphite);

6  אֶלְקָנָ֡ה (Elkanah), וְ֠יִשִּׁיָּהוּ (and Jisshiah), וַעֲזַרְאֵ֧ל (and Azarel), וְיוֹעֶ֛זֶר (and Joezer), וְיָשָׁבְעָ֖ם (and Jashobeam) הַקָּרְחִֽים׃ (the Korahites);

7  וְיוֹעֵאלָ֧ה (and Joelah) וּזְבַדְיָ֛ה (and Zebadiah) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יְרֹחָ֖ם (of Jeroham) מִן־ (of) הַגְּדֽוֹר׃ (Gedor).

8  וּמִן־ (And some) הַגָּדִ֡י (of the Gadite) נִבְדְּל֣וּ (separated themselves) אֶל־ (unto) דָּוִיד֩ (David) לַמְצַ֨ד (at the stronghold) מִדְבָּ֜רָה (in the wilderness), גִּבֹּרֵ֣י (mighty men) הַחַ֗יִל (of valor), אַנְשֵׁ֤י (men) צָבָא֙ (trained) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (for battle), עֹרְכֵ֥י (setting in array) צִנָּ֖ה (shield) וָרֹ֑מַח (and spear), וּפְנֵ֤י (and their faces) אַרְיֵה֙ (of the lion) פְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (the face), וְכִצְבָאיִ֥ם (and as gazelles) עַל־ (on) הֶהָרִ֖ים (the mountains) לְמַהֵֽר׃ס (as swift):

9  עֵ֖זֶר (Ezer) הָרֹ֑אשׁ (the first), עֹבַדְיָה֙ (Obadiah) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (the second), אֱלִיאָ֖ב (Eliab) הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁי׃ (the third), 10  מִשְׁמַנָּה֙ (Mishmannah) הָרְבִיעִ֔י (the fourth), יִרְמְיָ֖ה (Jeremiah) הַחֲמִשִֽׁי׃ (the fifth), 11  עַתַּי֙ (Attai) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י (the sixth), אֱלִיאֵ֖ל (Eliel) הַשְּׁבִעִֽי׃ (the seventh), 12  יֽוֹחָנָן֙ (Johanan) הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י (the eighth), אֶלְזָבָ֖ד (Elzabad) הַתְּשִׁיעִֽי׃ (the ninth), 13  יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Jeremiah) הָעֲשִׂירִ֔יס (the tenth), מַכְבַּנַּ֖י (and Machbanai) עַשְׁתֵּ֥י (the one) עָשָֽׂר׃ (and tenth).

14  אֵ֥לֶּה (These) מִבְּנֵי־ (from the sons) גָ֖ד (of Gad) רָאשֵׁ֣י (were captains) הַצָּבָ֑א (of the host), אֶחָ֤ד (one) לְמֵאָה֙ (over a hundred) הַקָּטָ֔ן (the least), וְהַגָּד֖וֹל (and the greatest) לְאָֽלֶף׃ (over a thousand).

15  אֵ֣לֶּה (These) הֵ֗ם (are) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (the ones who) עָבְר֤וּ (passed over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ (the Jordan) בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (in the month) הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first), וְה֥וּא (and it) מְמַלֵּ֖א (had overflowed) עַל־ (on) כָּל־ (all) גִּדיֹתָיו (its banks). וַיַּבְרִ֙יחוּ֙ (And they put to flight) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣עֲמָקִ֔ים (in the valleys), לַמִּזְרָ֖ח (to the east) וְלַֽמַּעֲרָֽב׃ס (and to the west).

16  וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ (And there came) מִן־ (some from) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) בִנְיָמִן֙ (of Benjamin) וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (and Judah) עַד־ (to) לַמְצָ֖ד (the stronghold) לְדָוִֽיד׃ (to David). 17  וַיֵּצֵ֣א (And went out) דָוִיד֮ (David) לִפְנֵיהֶם֒ (to meet them) וַיַּ֙עַן֙ (and he answered) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), אִם־ (If) לְשָׁל֞וֹם (in peace) בָּאתֶ֤ם (you⁺ have come) אֵלַי֙ (to me) לְעָזְרֵ֔נִי (to help me), יִֽהְיֶה־ (will be) לִּ֧י (of me) עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם (with you⁺) לֵבָ֖ב (a heart) לְיָ֑חַד (united); וְאִֽם־ (but if) לְרַמּוֹתַ֣נִי (to betray me) לְצָרַ֗י (to my enemies)— בְּלֹ֤א (without) חָמָס֙ (violence) בְּכַפַּ֔י (in my hands)— יֵ֛רֶא (shall see) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) אֲבוֹתֵ֖ינוּ (of our fathers) וְיוֹכַֽח׃ס (and judge you).

18  וְר֣וּחַ (And the Spirit) לָבְשָׁ֗ה (came upon) אֶת־ (-) עֲמָשַׂי֮ (Amasai) רֹ֣אשׁ (chief) הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁים (of the Thirty):

לְךָ֤ (To you), דָוִיד֙ (O David),

וְעִמְּךָ֣ (and with you), בֶן־ (O son) יִשַׁ֔י (of Jesse)!

שָׁל֨וֹם׀ (Peace), שָׁל֜וֹם (peace) לְךָ֗ (to you),

וְשָׁלוֹם֙ (and peace) לְעֹ֣זְרֶ֔ךָ (to your helpers).

כִּ֥י (For) עֲזָרְךָ֖ (helps you) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God).

וַיְקַבְּלֵ֣ם (And received them) דָּוִ֔יד (David) וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם (and made them) בְּרָאשֵׁ֥י (leaders) הַגְּדֽוּד׃פ (of the troop).

19  וּמִֽמְּנַשֶּׁ֞ה (And some from Manasseh) נָפְל֣וּ (fell) עַל־ (to) דָּוִ֗יד (David) בְּבֹא֨וֹ (when he was going) עִם־ (with) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֧ים (the Philistines) עַל־ (against) שָׁא֛וּל (Saul) לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to the battle). וְלֹ֣א (Not) עֲזָרֻ֑ם (they did help them), כִּ֣י (for) בְעֵצָ֗ה (by counsel) שִׁלְּחֻ֜הוּ (sent him away) סַרְנֵ֤י (the lords) פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ (of the Philistines) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), בְּרָאשֵׁ֕ינוּ (With our heads) יִפּ֖וֹל (he may fall) אֶל־ (to) אֲדֹנָ֥יו (his master) שָׁאֽוּל׃ (Saul). 20  בְּלֶכְתּ֣וֹ (When he went) אֶל־ (to) צִֽיקְלַ֗ג (Ziklag), נָפְל֣וּ (they fell) עָלָ֣יו׀ (to him) מִֽמְּנַשֶּׁ֡ה (from Manasseh):

עַ֠דְנַח (Adnah), וְיוֹזָבָ֤ד (and Jozabad), וִידִֽיעֲאֵל֙ (and Jediael), וּמִיכָאֵ֣ל (and Michael), וְיוֹזָבָ֔ד (and Jozabad), וֶאֱלִיה֖וּא (and Elihu), וְצִלְּתָ֑י (and Zillethai), רָאשֵׁ֥י (the heads) הָאֲלָפִ֖ים (of the thousands) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) לִמְנַשֶּֽׁה׃ (from Manasseh).

21  וְהֵ֗מָּה (And they) עָזְר֤וּ (helped) עִם־ (with) דָּוִיד֙ (David) עַֽל־ (against) הַגְּד֔וּד (the bands), כִּֽי־ (for) גִבּ֥וֹרֵי (mighty men) חַ֖יִל (of valor) כֻּלָּ֑ם (all were), וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and they were) שָׂרִ֖ים (captains) בַּצָּבָֽא׃ (in the army).

22  כִּ֚י (For) לְעֶת־ (at that time) י֣וֹם (day) בְּי֔וֹם (by day) יָבֹ֥אוּ (they came) עַל־ (to) דָּוִ֖יד (David) לְעָזְר֑וֹ (to help him), עַד־ (until) לְמַחֲנֶ֥ה (a camp) גָד֖וֹל (great it was), כְּמַחֲנֵ֥ה (like the camp) אֱלֹהִֽים׃פ (of God).

David’s Army Grows at Hebron

23  וְ֠אֵלֶּה (And these were) מִסְפְּרֵ֞י (the numbers) רָאשֵׁ֤י (of the heads) הֶֽחָלוּץ֙ (of the armed) לַצָּבָ֔א (of the host) בָּ֥אוּ (who came) עַל־ (to) דָּוִ֖יד (David) חֶבְר֑וֹנָה (at Hebron) לְהָסֵ֞ב (to turn over) מַלְכ֥וּת (the kingdom) שָׁא֛וּל (of Saul) אֵלָ֖יו (to him), כְּפִ֥י (according to the word) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

24  בְּנֵ֣י (Of the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) נֹשְׂאֵ֥י (bearing) צִנָּ֖ה (shield) וָרֹ֑מַח (and spear), שֵׁ֧שֶׁת (six) אֲלָפִ֛ים (thousand) וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה (and eight) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) חֲלוּצֵ֥י (armed) צָבָֽא׃ס (of the host).

25  מִן־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (Of the sons) שִׁמְע֗וֹן (of Simeon), גִּבּ֤וֹרֵי (mighty men) חַ֙יִל֙ (of valor) לַצָּבָ֔א (of the host) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וּמֵאָֽה׃ס (and a hundred).

26  מִן־ (-) בְּנֵי֙ (Of the sons) הַלֵּוִ֔י (of Levi) אַרְבַּ֥עַת (four) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred), 27  וִיהוֹיָדָ֖ע (and Jehoiada) הַנָּגִ֣יד (the leader) לְאַהֲרֹ֑ן (from Aaron), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred); 28  וְצָד֥וֹק (and Zadok) נַ֖עַר (a young man) גִּבּ֣וֹר (mighty) חָ֑יִל (of valor), וּבֵית־ (and of the house) אָבִ֥יו (of his father) שָׂרִ֖ים (captains) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וּשְׁנָֽיִם׃ס (and two).

29  וּמִן־ (And) בְּנֵ֧י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֛ן (of Benjamin), אֲחֵ֥י (brothers) שָׁא֖וּל (of Saul), שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) אֲלָפִ֑ים (thousand)— וְעַד־ (and until) הֵ֙נָּה֙ (then) מַרְבִּיתָ֔ם (the greatest part of them) שֹׁמְרִ֕ים (were keeping) מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (the charge) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) שָׁאֽוּל׃ס (of Saul).

30  וּמִן־ (And) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֣ה (and eight) מֵא֑וֹת (hundred) גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי (mighty men) חַ֔יִל (of valor), אַנְשֵׁ֥י (men) שֵׁמ֖וֹת (of renown) לְבֵ֥ית (according to the house) אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ס (of their fathers).

31  וּמֵחֲצִי֙ (And of the half-) מַטֵּ֣ה (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), שְׁמוֹנָ֥ה (eight) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) אָ֑לֶף (thousand) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) נִקְּבוּ֙ (were marked) בְּשֵׁמ֔וֹת (by name), לָב֖וֹא (to come) לְהַמְלִ֥יךְ (and make king) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִֽיד׃ס (David).

32  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (And of the sons) יִשָּׂשכָ֗ר (of Issachar) יוֹדְעֵ֤י (knowing) בִינָה֙ (discernment) לַֽעִתִּ֔ים (of the times), לָדַ֖עַת (knowing) מַה־ (what) יַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה (ought to do) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), רָאשֵׁיהֶ֣ם (their heads) מָאתַ֔יִם (two hundred) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲחֵיהֶ֖ם (their brothers) עַל־ (at) פִּיהֶֽם׃ס (their command).

33  מִזְּבֻל֞וּן (Of Zebulun) יוֹצְאֵ֣י (going forth) צָבָ֗א (to the host), עֹרְכֵ֧י (arranging) מִלְחָמָ֛ה (battle) בְּכָל־ (with all) כְּלֵ֥י (weapons) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (of war), חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (fifty) אָ֑לֶף (thousand) וְלַעֲדֹ֖ר (and to help) בְּלֹא־ (without) לֵ֥ב (a heart) וָלֵֽב׃ס (and a heart).

34  וּמִנַּפְתָּלִ֖י (And of Naphtali) שָׂרִ֣ים (captains) אָ֑לֶף (a thousand), וְעִמָּהֶם֙ (and with them) בְּצִנָּ֣ה (with shield) וַחֲנִ֔ית (and spear) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) וְשִׁבְעָ֖ה (and seven) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

35  וּמִן־ (And) הַדָּנִי֙ (of the Danite) עֹרְכֵ֣י (arranging) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (for battle) עֶשְׂרִֽים־ (twenty) וּשְׁמוֹנָ֥ה (and eight) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

36  וּמֵאָשֵׁ֗ר (And of Asher) יוֹצְאֵ֥י (going forth) צָבָ֛א (to the host) לַעֲרֹ֥ךְ (to arrange) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (for battle) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

37  וּמֵעֵ֣בֶר (And from the other side) לַ֠יַּרְדֵּן (of the Jordan), מִן־ (of) הָראוּבֵנִ֨י (the Reubenite), וְהַגָּדִ֜י (and the Gadite), וַחֲצִ֣י׀ (and the half-) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה (of Manasseh), בְּכֹל֙ (with every) כְּלֵי֙ (of weapon) צְבָ֣א (of war) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (for battle), מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים (and twenty) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand).

38  כָּל־ (All) אֵ֜לֶּה (these) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (men) מִלְחָמָה֮ (of war) עֹדְרֵ֣י (keeping) מַעֲרָכָה֒ (rank), בְּלֵבָ֤ב (heart) שָׁלֵם֙ (with a perfect), בָּ֣אוּ (came) חֶבְר֔וֹנָה (to Hebron) לְהַמְלִ֥יךְ (to make king) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֖יד (David) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וְ֠גַם (and) כָּל־ (all) שֵׁרִ֧ית (the rest) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) לֵ֥ב (were of mind) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לְהַמְלִ֥יךְ (to make king) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִֽיד׃ (David).

39  וַיִּהְיוּ־ (And they were) שָׁ֤ם (there) עִם־ (with) דָּוִיד֙ (David) יָמִ֣ים (days) שְׁלוֹשָׁ֔ה (three) אֹכְלִ֖ים (eating) וְשׁוֹתִ֑ים (and drinking), כִּֽי־ (for) הֵכִ֥ינוּ (had prepared) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ (their brothers). 40  וְגַ֣ם (And near) הַקְּרֽוֹבִים־ (those near) אֲ֠לֵיהֶם (to them) עַד־ (as far as) יִשָׂשכָ֨ר (Issachar) וּזְבֻל֜וּן (and Zebulun) וְנַפְתָּלִ֗י (and Naphtali) מְבִיאִ֣ים (were bringing) לֶ֡חֶם (food) בַּחֲמוֹרִ֣ים (on the donkeys), וּבַגְּמַלִּ֣ים (and on the camels), וּבַפְּרָדִ֣ים׀ (and on the mules), וּֽבַבָּקָ֡ר (and on the oxen), מַאֲכָ֡ל (and provisions) קֶ֠מַח (of flour), דְּבֵלִ֨ים (and cakes of figs), וְצִמּוּקִ֧ים (and cakes) וְיַֽיִן־ (of and raisins), וְשֶׁ֛מֶן (and wine), וּבָקָ֥ר (and oil), וְצֹ֖אן (and oxen), לָרֹ֑ב (and sheep). כִּ֥י (Indeed), שִׂמְחָ֖ה (there was joy) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (in Israel).
