David Fetches the Ark
(1 Chronicles 13:1–7)

1  וַיֹּ֨סֶף (And gathered) ע֥וֹד (again) דָּוִ֛ד (David) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) בָּח֥וּר (chosen one) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand). 2  וַיָּ֣קָם׀ (And arose), וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) דָּוִ֗ד (David) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָם֙ (the people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) אִתּ֔וֹ (with him) מִֽבַּעֲלֵ֖י (from Baale) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah) לְהַעֲל֣וֹת (to bring up) מִשָּׁ֗ם (from there) אֵ֚ת (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), אֲשֶׁר־ (whose) נִקְרָ֣א (is called) שֵׁ֗ם (name) שֵׁ֣ם (by the name) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) צְבָא֛וֹת (of Hosts), יֹשֵׁ֥ב (who dwells) הַכְּרֻבִ֖ים (between the cherubim) עָלָֽיו׃ (on it).

3  וַיַּרְכִּ֜בוּ (And they mounted) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֤וֹן (the ark) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) אֶל־ (on) עֲגָלָ֣ה (a cart) חֲדָשָׁ֔ה (new), וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֔הוּ (and they carried it) מִבֵּ֥ית (out of the house) אֲבִינָדָ֖ב (of Abinadab) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה (on the hill). וְעֻזָּ֣א (And with Uzzah) וְאַחְי֗וֹ (and Ahio) בְּנֵי֙ (the sons) אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב (of Abinadab) נֹהֲגִ֖ים (driving) אֶת־ (-) הָעֲגָלָ֥ה (the cart) חֲדָשָֽׁה׃ (new). 4  וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֗הוּ (And they brought it) מִבֵּ֤ית (out of the house) אֲבִֽינָדָב֙ (of Abinadab) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּגִּבְעָ֔ה (on the hill) עִ֖ם (accompanying) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וְאַחְי֕וֹ (and Ahio) הֹלֵ֖ךְ (went) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הָאָרֽוֹן׃ (the ark).

Uzzah Touches the Ark
(1 Chronicles 13:8–14)

5  וְדָוִ֣ד׀ (And David) וְכָל־ (and all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) מְשַֽׂחֲקִים֙ (were playing) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בְּכֹ֖ל (on all kinds) עֲצֵ֣י (of wood instruments) בְרוֹשִׁ֑ים (of cypress), וּבְכִנֹּר֤וֹת (and on harps), וּבִנְבָלִים֙ (and on stringed instruments), וּבְתֻפִּ֔ים (and on tambourines), וּבִמְנַֽעַנְעִ֖ים (and on sistrums), וּֽבְצֶלְצֶלִֽים׃ (and on cymbals).

6  וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (And they came) עַד־ (to) גֹּ֣רֶן (threshing floor) נָכ֑וֹן (of Nacon), וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (and reached out) עֻזָּ֜א (Uzzah) אֶל־ (to) אֲר֤וֹן (the ark) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) וַיֹּ֣אחֶז (and took hold) בּ֔וֹ (of it), כִּ֥י (because) שָׁמְט֖וּ (had stumbled) הַבָּקָֽר׃ (the oxen). 7  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֤ף (the anger) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּעֻזָּ֔ה (against Uzzah), וַיַּכֵּ֥הוּ (and struck him) שָׁ֛ם (there) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) עַל־ (for) הַשַּׁ֑ל (the error), וַיָּ֣מָת (and he died) שָׁ֔ם (there) עִ֖ם (by) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God).

8  וַיִּ֣חַר (And became hot) לְדָוִ֔ד (David) עַל֩ (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) פָּרַ֧ץ (had burst forth) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) פֶּ֖רֶץ (a breach) בְּעֻזָּ֑ה (against Uzzah), וַיִּקְרָ֞א (and he called the name) לַמָּק֤וֹם (of the place) הַהוּא֙ (that) פֶּ֣רֶץ (Perez-) עֻזָּ֔ה (uzzah) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

9  וַיִּרָ֥א (And was afraid) דָוִ֛ד (David) אֶת־ (of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֑וּא (that), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and he said), אֵ֛יךְ (How) יָב֥וֹא (can come) אֵלַ֖י (to me) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)? 10  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) אָבָ֣ה (would) דָוִ֗ד (David) לְהָסִ֥יר (to turn aside) אֵלָ֛יו (to himself) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) עַל־ (into) עִ֣יר (the City) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), וַיַּטֵּ֣הוּ (and took it aside) דָוִ֔ד (David) בֵּ֥ית (into the house) עֹבֵֽד־ (of Obed-) אֱד֖וֹם (edom) הַגִּתִּֽי׃ (the Gittite). 11  וַיֵּשֶׁב֩ (And remained) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) עֹבֵ֥ד (of Obed-) אֱדֹ֛ם (edom) הַגִּתִּ֖י (the Gittite) שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (three) חֳדָשִׁ֑ים (months), וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ (and blessed) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) עֹבֵ֥ד (Obed-) אֱדֹ֖ם (edom) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ (his house).

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
(1 Chronicles 15:1–28)

12  וַיֻּגַּ֗ד (And it was told) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (to King) דָּוִד֮ (David), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), בֵּרַ֣ךְ (Has blessed) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֨ית (the house) עֹבֵ֤ד (of Obed-) אֱדֹם֙ (edom), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) ל֔וֹ (unto him), בַּעֲב֖וּר (because) אֲר֣וֹן (of the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God).

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) דָּוִ֗ד (David) וַיַּעַל֩ (and brought up) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים (of God) מִבֵּ֨ית (from the house) עֹבֵ֥ד (of Obed-) אֱדֹ֛ם (edom) עִ֥יר (to the City) דָּוִ֖ד (of David) בְּשִׂמְחָֽה׃ (with joy). 13  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) כִּ֧י (when) צָעֲד֛וּ (had gone) נֹשְׂאֵ֥י (those carrying) אֲרוֹן־ (the ark) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) שִׁשָּׁ֣ה (six) צְעָדִ֑ים (paces), וַיִּזְבַּ֥ח (that he sacrificed) שׁ֖וֹר (an ox) וּמְרִֽיא׃ (and a fattened calf).

14  וְדָוִ֛ד (And David) מְכַרְכֵּ֥ר (danced) בְּכָל־ (with all) עֹ֖ז (his might) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וְדָוִ֕ד (and David) חָג֖וּר (was wearing) אֵפ֥וֹד (a ephod) בָּֽד׃ (linen). 15  וְדָוִד֙ (And David) וְכָל־ (and all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מַעֲלִ֖ים (brought up) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) בִּתְרוּעָ֖ה (with shouting) וּבְק֥וֹל (and with the voice) שׁוֹפָֽר׃ (of the shofar).

Michal’s Contempt for David
(1 Chronicles 15:29–16:3)

16  וְהָיָה֙ (And as) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) בָּ֖א (came into) עִ֣יר (the City) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), וּמִיכַ֨ל (and Michal) בַּת־ (daughter) שָׁא֜וּל (of Saul) נִשְׁקְפָ֣ה׀ (looked) בְּעַ֣ד (through) הַחַלּ֗וֹן (a window) וַתֵּ֨רֶא (and saw) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) דָּוִד֙ (David) מְפַזֵּ֤ז (leaping) וּמְכַרְכֵּר֙ (and whirling) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וַתִּ֥בֶז (and she despised) ל֖וֹ (him) בְּלִבָּֽהּ׃ (in her heart).

17  וַיָּבִ֜אוּ (And they brought) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) וַיַּצִּ֤גוּ (and set) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) בִּמְקוֹמ֔וֹ (in its place) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָאֹ֔הֶל (of the tabernacle) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָטָה־ (had erected) ל֖וֹ (for it) דָּוִ֑ד (David), וַיַּ֨עַל (and offered) דָּוִ֥ד (David) עֹל֛וֹת (burnt offerings) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וּשְׁלָמִֽים׃ (and peace offerings).

18  וַיְכַ֣ל (And had finished) דָּוִ֔ד (David) מֵהַעֲל֥וֹת (offering) הָעוֹלָ֖ה (the burnt offerings) וְהַשְּׁלָמִ֑ים (and the peace offerings), וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ (and he blessed) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people) בְּשֵׁ֖ם (in the name) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (of Hosts). 19  וַיְחַלֵּ֨ק (And he distributed) לְכָל־ (among all) הָעָ֜ם (the people), לְכָל־ (among whole) הֲמ֣וֹן (the multitude) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (of Israel), לְמֵאִ֣ישׁ (from the men) וְעַד־ (and to) אִשָּׁה֒ (the women) לְאִ֗ישׁ (to everyone) חַלַּ֥ת (loaf) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (of bread) אַחַ֔ת (one), וְאֶשְׁפָּ֣ר (and date cake) אֶחָ֔ד (one) וַאֲשִׁישָׁ֖ה (and cake of raisins) אֶחָ֑ת (one). וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And departed) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אִ֥ישׁ (each) לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃ (to his house).

20  וַיָּ֥שָׁב (And returned) דָּוִ֖ד (David) לְבָרֵ֣ךְ (to bless) אֶת־ (-) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house). וַתֵּצֵ֞א (And came out) מִיכַ֤ל (Michal) בַּת־ (the daughter) שָׁאוּל֙ (of Saul) לִקְרַ֣את (to meet) דָּוִ֔ד (David), וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), מַה־ (How) נִּכְבַּ֨ד (honored) הַיּ֜וֹם (today) מֶ֣לֶךְ (was the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) נִגְלָ֤ה (has uncovered himself) הַיּוֹם֙ (today) לְעֵינֵ֨י (in the eyes) אַמְה֣וֹת (of the maidservants) עֲבָדָ֔יו (of his servants); כְּהִגָּל֥וֹת (is openly) נִגְל֖וֹת (uncovered) אַחַ֥ד (as one) הָרֵקִֽים׃ (of the vain ones).

21  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) דָּוִד֮ (David) אֶל־ (to) מִיכַל֒ (Michal), לִפְנֵ֣י (It was before) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) בָּֽחַר־ (chose) בִּ֤י (me) מֵֽאָבִיךְ֙ (instead of your father) וּמִכָּל־ (and all) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house), לְצַוֺּ֨ת (to appoint) אֹתִ֥י (me) נָגִ֛יד (ruler) עַל־ (over) עַ֥ם (the people) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). וְשִׂחַקְתִּ֖י (And I will play) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 22  וּנְקַלֹּ֤תִי (And I will be more undignified) עוֹד֙ (even) מִזֹּ֔את (than this), וְהָיִ֥יתִי (and I will be) שָׁפָ֖ל (humble) בְּעֵינָ֑י (in my eyes), וְעִם־ (and as for) הָֽאֲמָהוֹת֙ (the maidservants) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of whom) אָמַ֔רְתְּ (you have spoken), עִמָּ֖ם (by them) אִכָּבֵֽדָה׃ (I will be honored).

23  וּלְמִיכַל֙ (And to Michal) בַּת־ (the daughter) שָׁא֔וּל (of Saul) לֹֽא־ (not) הָ֥יָה (there were) לָ֖הּ (unto her) יָ֑לֶד (children) עַ֖ד (until) י֥וֹם (the day) מוֹתָֽהּ׃פ (of her death).
