Jehoahaz Reigns in Israel

1  בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (In the year) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (twenty) וְשָׁלֹשׁ֙ (and third) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לְיוֹאָ֥שׁ (of Joash) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ (of Ahaziah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), מָ֠לַךְ (became king) יְהוֹאָחָ֨ז (Jehoahaz) בֶּן־ (son) יֵה֤וּא (of Jehu) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria) שְׁבַ֥ע (seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַ֠יֵּלֶךְ (and went) אַחַ֨ר (after) חַטֹּ֜את (the sins) יָרָבְעָ֧ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֛ט (of Nebat), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הֶחֱטִ֥יא (had caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel). לֹא־ (Not) סָ֥ר (he did depart) מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ (from them). 3  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (against Israel), וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֞ם (and He delivered them) בְּיַ֣ד׀ (into the hand) חֲזָאֵ֣ל (of Hazael) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָ֗ם (of Aram) וּבְיַ֛ד (and into the hand) בֶּן־ (of Ben-) הֲדַ֥ד (hadad) בֶּן־ (son) חֲזָאֵ֖ל (of Hazael), כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

4  וַיְחַ֥ל (And pleaded) יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז (Jehoahaz) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י (before) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (and listened) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH). כִּ֤י (For) רָאָה֙ (He saw) אֶת־ (-) לַ֣חַץ (the oppression) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כִּֽי־ (because) לָחַ֥ץ (oppressed) אֹתָ֖ם (them) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אֲרָֽם׃ (of Aram). 5  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And gave) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (to Israel) מוֹשִׁ֔יעַ (a deliverer), וַיֵּ֣צְא֔וּ (and they went out) מִתַּ֖חַת (from under) יַד־ (the hand) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram). וַיֵּשְׁב֧וּ (And dwelt) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶ֖ם (in their tents) כִּתְמ֥וֹל (as yesterday) שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ (and the day before yesterday).

6  אַ֠ךְ (Nevertheless), לֹֽא־ (not) סָ֜רוּ (they did depart) מֵחַטֹּ֧אות (from the sins) בֵּית־ (of the house) יָרָבְעָ֛ם (of Jeroboam) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הֶחֱטִי (had caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel). בָּ֣הּ (In them) הָלָ֑ךְ (he walked), וְגַם֙ (and also) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֔ה (the wooden image) עָמְדָ֖ה (remained) בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (in Samaria).

7  כִּ֣י (For) לֹא֩ (none) הִשְׁאִ֨יר (He left) לִיהוֹאָחָ֜ז (of Jehoahaz) עָ֗ם (of the people), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים (fifty) פָּֽרָשִׁים֙ (horsemen), וַעֲשָׂ֣רָה (and ten) רֶ֔כֶב (chariot), וַעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (and ten) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) רַגְלִ֑י (foot soldiers); כִּ֤י (for) אִבְּדָם֙ (had destroyed them) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram) וַיְשִׂמֵ֥ם (and made them) כֶּֽעָפָ֖ר (like the dust) לָדֻֽשׁ׃ (for threshing).

8  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֧י (of the acts) יְהוֹאָחָ֛ז (of Jehoahaz), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he did), וּגְבוּרָת֑וֹ (and his might), הֲלוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

9  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) יְהֽוֹאָחָז֙ (Jehoahaz) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֖הוּ (and they buried him) בְּשֹׁמְר֑וֹן (in Samaria). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יוֹאָ֥שׁ (Joash) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

10  בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (In the year) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (thirty) וָשֶׁ֙בַע֙ (and seventh) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לְיוֹאָ֖שׁ (of Joash) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), מָ֠לַךְ (became king) יְהוֹאָ֨שׁ (Jehoash) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹאָחָ֤ז (of Jehoahaz) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria) שֵׁ֥שׁ (six) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 11  וַיַּֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). לֹ֣א (Not) סָ֗ר (did he depart) מִכָּל־ (from all) חַטֹּ֞אות (the sins) יָרָבְעָ֧ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֛ט (of Nebat), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הֶחֱטִ֥יא (caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel), בָּ֥הּ (in them) הָלָֽךְ׃ (he walked).

12  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֤י (of the acts) יוֹאָשׁ֙ (of Joash), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did), וּגְב֣וּרָת֔וֹ (and his might) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (with which) נִלְחַ֔ם (he fought) עִ֖ם (against) אֲמַצְיָ֣ה (Amaziah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

13  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) יוֹאָשׁ֙ (Joash) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וְיָרָבְעָ֖ם (and Jeroboam) יָשַׁ֣ב (sat) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֑וֹ (his throne). וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר (And was buried) יוֹאָשׁ֙ (Joash) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria) עִ֖ם (with) מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).

Elisha’s Final Prophecy

14  וֶֽאֱלִישָׁע֙ (And Elisha) חָלָ֣ה (had become sick) אֶת־ (with) חָלְי֔וֹ (the illness) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (from which) יָמ֖וּת (would die) בּ֑וֹ (He), וַיֵּ֨רֶד (and came down) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) וַיֵּ֤בְךְּ (and wept) עַל־ (over) פָּנָיו֙ (his face), וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and said), אָבִ֣י׀ (My father), אָבִ֔י (my father), רֶ֥כֶב (the chariot) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃ (and its horsemen).

15  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha) קַ֖ח (Take) קֶ֣שֶׁת (a bow) וְחִצִּ֑ים (and some arrows).

וַיִּקַּ֥ח (And he took) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) קֶ֥שֶׁת (a bow) וְחִצִּֽים׃ (and arrows).

16  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And he said) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (to the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), הַרְכֵּ֤ב (Put) יָֽדְךָ֙ (your hand) עַל־ (on) הַקֶּ֔שֶׁת (the bow).

וַיַּרְכֵּ֖ב (And he drove) יָד֑וֹ (his hand), וַיָּ֧שֶׂם (and put) אֱלִישָׁ֛ע (Elisha) יָדָ֖יו (his hands) עַל־ (on) יְדֵ֥י (hands) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

17  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), פְּתַ֧ח (Open) הַחַלּ֛וֹן (the window) קֵ֖דְמָה (to the east).

וַיִּפְתָּ֑ח (And he opened it), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) אֱלִישָׁ֤ע (Elisha), יְרֵה֙ (Shoot). וַיּ֔וֹר (And he shot).

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said),

חֵץ־ (The arrow) תְּשׁוּעָ֤ה (of deliverance) לַֽיהוָה֙ (of YHWH),

וְחֵ֣ץ (and the arrow) תְּשׁוּעָ֣ה (of deliverance) בַֽאֲרָ֔ם (from Aram).

וְהִכִּיתָ֧ (And for you must strike) אֶת־ (-) אֲרָ֛ם (Aram) בַּאֲפֵ֖ק (at Aphek)

עַד־ (until) כַּלֵּֽה׃ (you have consumed them).

18  וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (And he said), קַ֥ח (Take) הַחִצִּ֖ים (the arrows).

וַיִּקָּ֑ח (And he took them), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and he said) לְמֶֽלֶךְ־ (to the king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), הַךְ־ (Strike) אַ֔רְצָה (the ground).

וַיַּ֥ךְ (And he struck) שָֽׁלֹשׁ־ (three) פְּעָמִ֖ים (times) וַֽיַּעֲמֹֽד׃ (and he stood).

19  וַיִּקְצֹ֨ף (And was angry) עָלָ֜יו (with him) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), לְהַכּ֨וֹת (You should have struck) חָמֵ֤שׁ (five) אוֹ־ (or) שֵׁשׁ֙ (six) פְּעָמִ֔ים (times); אָ֛ז (then) הִכִּ֥יתָ (you would have struck) אֶת־ (-) אֲרָ֖ם (Aram) עַד־ (up to) כַּלֵּ֑ה (completion). וְעַתָּ֕ה (And) שָׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) פְּעָמִ֖ים (times) תַּכֶּ֥ה (you will strike) אֶת־ (-) אֲרָֽם׃ס (Aram).

20  וַיָּ֥מָת (And died) אֱלִישָׁ֖ע (Elisha), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֑הוּ (and they buried him).

וּגְדוּדֵ֥י (And the bands from) מוֹאָ֛ב (Moab) יָבֹ֥אוּ (came) בָאָ֖רֶץ (into the land) בָּ֥א (at the coming in) שָׁנָֽה׃ (of the year). 21  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), הֵ֣ם׀ (as they) קֹבְרִ֣ים (were burying) אִ֗ישׁ (a man), וְהִנֵּה֙ (that suddenly) רָא֣וּ (they spied) אֶֽת־ (-) הַגְּד֔וּד (a band), וַיַּשְׁלִ֥יכוּ (and they cast) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֖ישׁ (the man) בְּקֶ֣בֶר (in the tomb) אֱלִישָׁ֑ע (of Elisha), וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ (and he was let down) וַיִּגַּ֤ע (and touched) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man) בְּעַצְמ֣וֹת (the bones) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (of Elisha), וַיְחִ֖י (and he was revived) וַיָּ֥קָם (and stood) עַל־ (on) רַגְלָֽיו׃פ (his feet).

22  וַֽחֲזָאֵל֙ (And Hazael) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram) לָחַ֖ץ (oppressed) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֥י (the days) יְהוֹאָחָֽז׃ (of Jehoaha z). 23  וַיָּחָן֩ (And was gracious) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֹתָ֤ם (to them) וַֽיְרַחֲמֵם֙ (and had compassion on them) וַיִּ֣פֶן (and turned) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) לְמַ֣עַן (on account) בְּרִית֔וֹ (of His covenant) אֶת־ (with) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham), יִצְחָ֣ק (Isaac), וְיַֽעֲקֹ֑ב (and Jacob). וְלֹ֤א (And not) אָבָה֙ (would) הַשְׁחִיתָ֔ם (He destroy them) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) הִשְׁלִיכָ֥ם (cast them) מֵֽעַל־ (from) פָּנָ֖יו (His presence) עַד־ (even to) עָֽתָּה׃ (now).

24  וַיָּ֖מָת (And died) חֲזָאֵ֣ל (Hazael) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram), וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (and reigned) בֶּן־ (Ben-) הֲדַ֥ד (hadad) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place). 25  וַיָּ֜שָׁב (And turned) יְהוֹאָ֣שׁ (Jehoash) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹאָחָ֗ז (of Jehoahaz) וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and took) אֶת־ (-) הֶֽעָרִים֙ (the cities) מִיַּד֙ (from the hand) בֶּן־ (of Ben-) הֲדַ֣ד (hadad) בֶּן־ (son) חֲזָאֵ֔ל (of Hazael) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לָקַ֗ח (he had taken) מִיַּ֛ד (from the hand) יְהוֹאָחָ֥ז (of Jehoahaz) אָבִ֖יו (his father) בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (in the war). שָׁלֹ֤שׁ (Three) פְּעָמִים֙ (times) הִכָּ֣הוּ (defeated him) יוֹאָ֔שׁ (Joash) וַיָּ֖שֶׁב (and returned) אֶת־ (-) עָרֵ֥י (the cities) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).
