Babylon Controls Jehoiakim

1  בְּיָמָ֣יו (In his days) עָלָ֔ה (came up) נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶ֑ל (of Babylon), וַיְהִי־ (and became) ל֨וֹ (to him) יְהוֹיָקִ֥ים (Jehoiakim) עֶ֙בֶד֙ (a vassal) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) שָׁנִ֔ים (years). וַיָּ֖שָׁב (And he turned) וַיִּמְרָד־ (and rebelled) בּֽוֹ׃ (against him).

2  וַיְשַׁלַּ֣ח (And sent) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) בּ֡וֹ (against him) אֶת־ (-) גְּדוּדֵ֣י (bands) כַשְׂדִּים֩ (of Chaldeans), וְאֶת־ (and) גְּדוּדֵ֨י (bands) אֲרָ֜ם (of Aram), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) גְּדוּדֵ֣י (bands) מוֹאָ֗ב (of Moabites), וְאֵת֙ (and) גְּדוּדֵ֣י (bands) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon). וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥ם (And He sent them) בִּֽיהוּדָ֖ה (against Judah) לְהַֽאֲבִיד֑וֹ (to destroy it) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) דִּבֶּ֔ר (He had spoken) בְּיַ֖ד (by) עֲבָדָ֥יו (His servants) הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ (the prophets). 3  אַ֣ךְ׀ (Surely) עַל־ (at) פִּ֣י (the commandment) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) הָֽיְתָה֙ (this came) בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה (upon Judah), לְהָסִ֖יר (to remove them) מֵעַ֣ל (from) פָּנָ֑יו (His sight), בְּחַטֹּ֣את (for the sins) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), כְּכֹ֖ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָֽׂה׃ (he had done), 4  וְגַ֤ם (and also) דַּֽם־ (of blood) הַנָּקִי֙ (the innocent) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) שָׁפָ֔ךְ (he poured out). וַיְמַלֵּ֥א (And he had filled) אֶת־ (-) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem) דָּ֣ם (with blood) נָקִ֑י (innocent), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) אָבָ֥ה (was willing) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לִסְלֹֽחַ׃ (to forgive).

5  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) יְהוֹיָקִ֖ים (of Jehoiakim) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

6  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And rested) יְהוֹיָקִ֖ים (Jehoiakim) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers), וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (and reigned) יְהוֹיָכִ֥ין (Jehoiachin) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place).

7  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) הֹסִ֥יף (added) עוֹד֙ (anymore) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) לָצֵ֖את (to go out) מֵֽאַרְצ֑וֹ (out of his land). כִּֽי־ (For) לָקַ֞ח (had taken) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) בָּבֶ֗ל (of Babylon) מִנַּ֤חַל (from the Brook) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) עַד־ (to) נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֔ת (Euphrates) כֹּ֛ל (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הָיְתָ֖ה (belonged) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) מִצְרָֽיִם׃פ (of Egypt).

8  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה (of eight) עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה (and ten) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יְהוֹיָכִ֣ין (Jehoiachin was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (and three) חֳדָשִׁ֔ים (months) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) נְחֻשְׁתָּ֥א (was Nehushta) בַת־ (daughter) אֶלְנָתָ֖ן (of Elnathan) מִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (of Jerusalem). 9  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

The Captivity of Jerusalem

10  בָּעֵ֣ת (At the time) הַהִ֔יא (that) עָלָה (came up) עַבְדֵ֛י (the servants) נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר (of Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (against Jerusalem), וַתָּבֹ֥א (and came) הָעִ֖יר (the city) בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃ (under siege). 11  וַיָּבֹ֛א (And came) נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) עַל־ (against) הָעִ֑יר (the city), וַעֲבָדָ֖יו (and his servants) צָרִ֥ים (lay siege) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (to it). 12  וַיֵּצֵ֞א (And went out) יְהוֹיָכִ֤ין (Jehoiachin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) עַל־ (to) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon)— ה֣וּא (he), וְאִמּ֔וֹ (and his mother), וַעֲבָדָ֖יו (and his servants), וְשָׂרָ֣יו (and his princes), וְסָֽרִיסָ֑יו (and his officers).

וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And took captive) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon) בִּשְׁנַ֥ת (in the year) שְׁמֹנֶ֖ה (eighth) לְמָלְכֽוֹ׃ (of his reign). 13  וַיּוֹצֵ֣א (And he carried out) מִשָּׁ֗ם (from there) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אוֹצְרוֹת֙ (the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וְאֽוֹצְר֖וֹת (and the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king). וַיְקַצֵּ֞ץ (And he cut in pieces) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֣י (the articles) הַזָּהָ֗ב (of gold) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֜ה (had made) שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה (Solomon) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) בְּהֵיכַ֣ל (in the temple) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had declared) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 14  וְהִגְלָ֣ה (And he carried away) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יְ֠רוּשָׁלִַם (Jerusalem), וְֽאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הַשָּׂרִ֞ים (the captains), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) כָּל־ (all) גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י (the mighty men) הַחַ֗יִל (of valor)— עֲשָׂרָה (ten) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) גּוֹלֶ֔ה (captives)— וְכָל־ (and every) הֶחָרָ֖שׁ (the craftsmn) וְהַמַּסְגֵּ֑ר (and smith). לֹ֣א (None) נִשְׁאַ֔ר (remained) זוּלַ֖ת (except) דַּלַּ֥ת (the poor) עַם־ (of the people) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

15  וַיֶּ֥גֶל (And he carried away) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹיָכִ֖ין (Jehoiachin) בָּבֶ֑לָה (to Babylon). וְאֶת־ (And) אֵ֣ם (the mother) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (of the king), וְאֶת־ (and) נְשֵׁ֨י (the wives) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (of the king), וְאֶת־ (and) סָרִיסָ֗יו (his eunuchs), וְאֵת֙ (and) אֱוִלֵי (the leaders) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) הוֹלִ֛יךְ (he carried) גּוֹלָ֥ה (into captivity) מִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (from Jerusalem) בָּבֶֽלָה׃ (to Babylon). 16  וְאֵת֩ (And) כָּל־ (all) אַנְשֵׁ֨י (the men) הַחַ֜יִל (of valor), שִׁבְעַ֣ת (seven) אֲלָפִ֗ים (thousand), וְהֶחָרָ֤שׁ (and the craftsmen) וְהַמַּסְגֵּר֙ (and the smiths) אֶ֔לֶף (a thousand), הַכֹּ֕ל (all) גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים (strong), עֹשֵׂ֣י (fit) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (for war). וַיְבִיאֵ֧ם (And brought these) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon) גּוֹלָ֖ה (captive) בָּבֶֽלָה׃ (to Babylon).

17  וַיַּמְלֵ֧ךְ (And made king) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon) אֶת־ (-) מַתַּנְיָ֥ה (Mattaniah) דֹד֖וֹ (his uncle) תַּחְתָּ֑יו (in his place), וַיַּסֵּ֥ב (and he turned) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃פ (to Zedekiah).

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah

18  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְאַחַ֤ת (and one) שָׁנָה֙ (years) צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Zedekiah was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְאַחַ֤ת (and one) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) חֲמִיטַל (was Hamutal) בַּֽת־ (daughter) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (of Jeremiah) מִלִּבְנָֽה׃ (of Libnah).

19  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And He did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) יְהוֹיָקִֽים׃ (Jehoiakim). 20  כִּ֣י׀ (For) עַל־ (on account) אַ֣ף (of the nose) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) הָיְתָ֤ה (this happened) בִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (in Jerusalem) וּבִ֣יהוּדָ֔ה (and Judah), עַד־ (that) הִשְׁלִכ֥וֹ (He finally cast out) אֹתָ֖ם (them) מֵעַ֣ל (from) פָּנָ֑יו (His presence).

וַיִּמְרֹ֥ד (And rebelled) צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ (Zedekiah) בְּמֶ֥לֶךְ (against the king) בָּבֶֽל׃ס (of Babylon).
