Jehoahaz Succeeds Josiah
(2 Kings 23:31–35)

1  וַיִּקְחוּ֙ (And took) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז (Jehoahaz) בֶּן־ (son) יֹאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ (of Josiah), וַיַּמְלִיכֻ֥הוּ (and they made him king) תַֽחַת־ (in place) אָבִ֖יו (of his father) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

2  בֶּן־ (Was a son) שָׁל֧וֹשׁ (of three) וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים (and twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) יוֹאָחָ֣ז (Joahaz) בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (and three) חֳדָשִׁ֔ים (months) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem). 3  וַיְסִירֵ֥הוּ (And turned him aside) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (at Jerusalem), וַֽיַּעֲנֹשׁ֙ (and he imposed a fine) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (on the land) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) כִכַּר־ (talents) כֶּ֖סֶף (of silver) וְכִכַּ֥ר (and a talent) זָהָֽב׃ (of gold).

4  וַיַּמְלֵ֨ךְ (And caused to reign) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) מִצְרַ֜יִם (of Egypt) אֶת־ (-) אֶלְיָקִ֣ים (Eliakim) אָחִ֗יו (his brother) עַל־ (over) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and Jerusalem), וַיַּסֵּ֥ב (and he turned) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יְהוֹיָקִ֑ים (to Jehoiakim). וְאֶת־ (And) יוֹאָחָ֤ז (Joahaz) אָחִיו֙ (his brother) לָקַ֣ח (took) נְכ֔וֹ (Neco) וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ (and carried him off) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃פ (to Egypt).

Jehoiakim Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 23:36–37)

5  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים (Jehoiakim was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְאַחַ֤ת (and one) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֔ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ (his God).

6  עָלָ֣יו (Against him) עָלָ֔ה (came up) נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶ֑ל (of Babylon) וַיַּֽאַסְרֵ֙הוּ֙ (and bound him) בַּֽנְחֻשְׁתַּ֔יִם (in bronze) לְהֹלִיכ֖וֹ (to carry him off) בָּבֶֽלָה׃ (to Babylon). 7  וּמִכְּלֵי֙ (And some of the articles from) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הֵבִ֥יא (carried off) נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר (Nebuchadnezzar) לְבָבֶ֑ל (to Babylon), וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם (and he put them) בְּהֵיכָל֖וֹ (in his temple) בְּבָבֶֽל׃ (at Babylon).

8  וְיֶתֶר֩ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֨י (of the acts) יְהֽוֹיָקִ֜ים (of Jehoiakim), וְתֹֽעֲבֹתָ֤יו (and the abominations) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂה֙ (he did), וְהַנִּמְצָ֣א (and what was found) עָלָ֔יו (against him), הִנָּ֣ם (behold) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (they are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the book) מַלְכֵ֥י (of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (and Judah). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יְהוֹיָכִ֥ין (Jehoiachin) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

9  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁמוֹנֶ֤ה (of eight) שָׁנִים֙ (years) יְהוֹיָכִ֣ין (Jehoiachin was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה (and three) חֳדָשִׁים֙ (months) וַעֲשֶׂ֣רֶת (and ten) יָמִ֔ים (days) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

10  וְלִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת (And at the return) הַשָּׁנָ֗ה (of the year) שָׁלַח֙ (summoned him) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) נְבֽוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֔ר (Nebuchadnezzar) וַיְבִאֵ֣הוּ (and took him) בָבֶ֔לָה (to Babylon), עִם־ (with) כְּלֵ֖י (the vessels) חֶמְדַּ֣ת (desirable) בֵּית־ (from the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיַּמְלֵךְ֙ (and caused to reign) אֶת־ (-) צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Zedekiah) אָחִ֔יו (his brother) עַל־ (over) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) וִֽירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ (and Jerusalem).

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah

11  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֧ים (of twenty) וְאַחַ֛ת (and one) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Zedekiah was) בְמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וְאַחַ֤ת (and one) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem). 12  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And He did) הָרַ֔ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (his God); לֹ֣א (not) נִכְנַ֗ע (did he humble himself) מִלִּפְנֵ֛י (before) יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) מִפִּ֥י (from the mouth) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

13  וְ֠גַם (And also) בַּמֶּ֤לֶךְ (against King) נְבֽוּכַדְנֶאצַּר֙ (Nebuchadnezzar) מָרָ֔ד (he rebelled), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הִשְׁבִּיע֖וֹ (had caused him to swear) בֵּֽאלֹהִ֑ים (by God). וַיֶּ֤קֶשׁ (And he stiffened) אֶת־ (-) עָרְפּוֹ֙ (his neck) וַיְאַמֵּ֣ץ (and strengthened) אֶת־ (-) לְבָב֔וֹ (his heart) מִשּׁ֕וּב (against turning) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 14  גַּ֠ם (Also) כָּל־ (all) שָׂרֵ֨י (the leaders) הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים (of the priests) וְהָעָם֙ (and the people) הִרְבּ֣וּ (multiplied) לִמְעָול־ (to act unfaithfully) מַ֔עַל (an unfaithfulness) כְּכֹ֖ל (like all) תֹּעֲב֣וֹת (the abominations) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (of the nations), וַֽיְטַמְּאוּ֙ (and they defiled) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הִקְדִּ֖ישׁ (He had consecrated) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

The Fall of Jerusalem
(2 Kings 25:1–7)

15  וַיִּשְׁלַ֡ח (And sent) יְהוָה֩ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֨י (God) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֧ם (of their fathers) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (to them) בְּיַ֥ד (by) מַלְאָכָ֖יו (His messengers), הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם (rising up early) וְשָׁל֑וֹחַ (and sending them), כִּֽי־ (because) חָמַ֥ל (He had compassion) עַל־ (on) עַמּ֖וֹ (His people) וְעַל־ (and on) מְעוֹנֽוֹ׃ (His dwelling place). 16  וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ (And they) מַלְעִבִים֙ (mocked) בְּמַלְאֲכֵ֣י (the messengers) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) וּבוֹזִ֣ים (and despised) דְּבָרָ֔יו (His words) וּמִֽתַּעְתְּעִ֖ים (and scoffed) בִּנְבִאָ֑יו (at His prophets), עַ֠ד (until) עֲל֧וֹת (arose) חֲמַת־ (the wrath) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) בְּעַמּ֖וֹ (against His people), עַד־ (until) לְאֵ֥ין (there was no) מַרְפֵּֽא׃ (healing).

17  וַיַּ֨עַל (And He brought up) עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (against them) אֶת־ (-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) כַּשְׂדִּיִּים (the Chaldeans), וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג (and he killed) בַּחוּרֵיהֶ֤ם (their young men) בַּחֶ֙רֶב֙ (with the sword) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) מִקְדָּשָׁ֔ם (of their sanctuary) וְלֹ֥א (and not) חָמַ֛ל (had compassion) עַל־ (on) בָּח֥וּר (young man) וּבְתוּלָ֖ה (or virgin), זָקֵ֣ן (on the aged) וְיָשֵׁ֑שׁ (or the weak). הַכֹּ֖ל (All) נָתַ֥ן (He gave) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (into his hand). 18  וְ֠כֹל (And all) כְּלֵ֞י (the articles from) בֵּ֤ית (the house) הָאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God), הַגְּדֹלִ֣ים (great) וְהַקְּטַנִּ֔ים (and small), וְאֹֽצְרוֹת֙ (and the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וְאֹצְר֥וֹת (and the treasures) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) וְשָׂרָ֑יו (and of his leaders), הַכֹּ֖ל (the entirety) הֵבִ֥יא (he brought in) בָבֶֽל׃ (to Babylon). 19  וַֽיִּשְׂרְפוּ֙ (And they burned) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) וַֽיְנַתְּצ֔וּ (and broke down) אֵ֖ת (-) חוֹמַ֣ת (the wall) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem), וְכָל־ (and all) אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ (its palaces) שָׂרְפ֣וּ (they burned) בָאֵ֔שׁ (with the fire), וְכָל־ (and all) כְּלֵ֥י (the vessels) מַחֲמַדֶּ֖יהָ (desirable) לְהַשְׁחִֽית׃ס (destroyed).

20  וַיֶּ֛גֶל (And he carried away) הַשְּׁאֵרִ֥ית (those who escaped) מִן־ (from) הַחֶ֖רֶב (the sword) אֶל־ (to) בָּבֶ֑ל (Babylon), וַֽיִּהְיוּ־ (and they were) ל֤וֹ (unto him) וּלְבָנָיו֙ (and unto his sons) לַעֲבָדִ֔ים (for servants) עַד־ (until) מְלֹ֖ךְ (the reigning) מַלְכ֥וּת (of the kingdom) פָּרָֽס׃ (of Persia) 21  לְמַלֹּ֤אות (to fulfill) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּפִ֣י (by the mouth) יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ (of Jeremiah), עַד־ (until) רָצְתָ֥ה (had enjoyed) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֶת־ (-) שַׁבְּתוֹתֶ֑יהָ (her Sabbaths). כָּל־ (All) יְמֵ֤י (the days) הָשַּׁמָּה֙ (of her desolation) שָׁבָ֔תָה (she kept Sabbath), לְמַלֹּ֖אות (to the fullness) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (of seventy) שָׁנָֽה׃פ (years).

The Proclamation of Cyrus
(Ezra 1:1–4; Isaiah 45:1–25)

22  וּבִשְׁנַ֣ת (And in the year) אַחַ֗ת (first) לְכ֙וֹרֶשׁ֙ (of Cyrus) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) פָּרַ֔ס (of Persia), לִכְל֥וֹת (to fulfill) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּפִ֣י (by the mouth) יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ (of Jeremiah), הֵעִ֣יר (stirred up) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) ר֙וּחַ֙ (the spirit) כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ (of Cyrus) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) פָּרַ֔ס (of Persia) וַיַּֽעֲבֶר־ (and he caused to pass over) קוֹל֙ (a proclamation) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) מַלְכוּת֔וֹ (his kingdom), וְגַם־ (and also) בְּמִכְתָּ֖ב (in writing), לֵאמֹֽר׃ס (saying),

23  כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ׀ (Cyrus) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) פָּרַ֗ס (of Persia):

כָּל־ (All) מַמְלְכ֤וֹת (the kingdoms) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the earth) נָ֣תַן (has given) לִ֗י (to me) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), וְהֽוּא־ (and He) פָקַ֤ד (has commanded) עָלַי֙ (to me) לִבְנֽוֹת־ (to build) ל֣וֹ (for Him) בַ֔יִת (a house) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה (in Judah).

מִֽי־ (Who is) בָכֶ֣ם (among you⁺) מִכָּל־ (of all) עַמּ֗וֹ (his people)? יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֛יו (his God) עִמּ֖וֹ (be with him), וְיָֽעַל׃ (and may he go up).
