David’s Triumphs
(1 Chronicles 18:1–13; Psalm 60:1–12)

1  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) אַֽחֲרֵי־ (after) כֵ֔ן (this), וַיַּ֥ךְ (that struck) דָּוִ֛ד (David) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) וַיַּכְנִיעֵ֑ם (and subdued them), וַיִּקַּ֥ח (and took) דָּוִ֛ד (David) אֶת־ (-) מֶ֥תֶג (Metheg-) הָאַמָּ֖ה (ammah) מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (of the Philistines).

2  וַיַּ֣ךְ (And he defeated) אֶת־ (-) מוֹאָ֗ב (Moab), וַֽיְמַדְּדֵ֤ם (and he measured them off) בַּחֶ֙בֶל֙ (with a line), הַשְׁכֵּ֣ב (forcing down) אוֹתָ֣ם (them) אַ֔רְצָה (to the ground). וַיְמַדֵּ֤ד (And he measured off) שְׁנֵֽי־ (with two) חֲבָלִים֙ (lines) לְהָמִ֔ית (those to be put to death), וּמְלֹ֥א (and the fullness) הַחֶ֖בֶל (of the line) לְהַחֲי֑וֹת (those to be kept alive). וַתְּהִ֤י (And became) מוֹאָב֙ (the Moabites) לְדָוִ֔ד (of David) לַעֲבָדִ֖ים (servants), נֹשְׂאֵ֥י (lifting up) מִנְחָֽה׃ (tribute).

3  וַיַּ֣ךְ (And defeated) דָּוִ֔ד (David) אֶת־ (-) הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר (Hadadezer) בֶּן־ (son) רְחֹ֖ב (of Rehob) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) צוֹבָ֑ה (of Zobah) בְּלֶכְתּ֕וֹ (as he went) לְהָשִׁ֥יב (to recover) יָד֖וֹ (his hand) בִּֽנְהַר־׃ (at the River). 4  וַיִּלְכֹּ֨ד (And took) דָּוִ֜ד (David) מִמֶּ֗נּוּ (from him) אֶ֤לֶף (a thousand), וּשְׁבַע־ (and seven) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) פָּרָשִׁ֔ים (horsemen), וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים (and twenty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) אִ֣ישׁ (men) רַגְלִ֑י (on foot). וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר (And hamstrung) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) הָרֶ֔כֶב (chariot horse), וַיּוֹתֵ֥ר (and he spared) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (of them) מֵ֥אָה (a hundred) רָֽכֶב׃ (chariots).

5  וַתָּבֹא֙ (And came) אֲרַ֣ם (the Arameans) דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus) לַעְזֹ֕ר (to give help) לַהֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר (to Hadadezer) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) צוֹבָ֑ה (of Zobah), וַיַּ֤ךְ (and struck) דָּוִד֙ (David) בַּֽאֲרָ֔ם (Aram) עֶשְׂרִֽים־ (twenty) וּשְׁנַ֥יִם (and two) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) אִֽישׁ׃ (men). 6  וַיָּ֨שֶׂם (And put) דָּוִ֤ד (David) נְצִבִים֙ (garrisons) בַּאֲרַ֣ם (in Aram) דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus), וַתְּהִ֤י (and became) אֲרָם֙ (Aram) לְדָוִ֔ד (of David) לַעֲבָדִ֖ים (servants) נוֹשְׂאֵ֣י (and brought) מִנְחָ֑ה (tribute). וַיֹּ֤שַׁע (And preserved) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֔ד (David) בְּכֹ֖ל (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) הָלָֽךְ׃ (he went).

7  וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And took) דָּוִ֗ד (David) אֵ֚ת (-) שִׁלְטֵ֣י (the shields) הַזָּהָ֔ב (of gold) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָי֔וּ (belonged) אֶ֖ל (to) עַבְדֵ֣י (the servants) הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר (of Hadadezer), וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם (and he brought them) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (to Jerusalem). 8  וּמִבֶּ֥טַח (And from Betah) וּמִבֵּֽרֹתַ֖י (and from Berothai), עָרֵ֣י (cities) הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר (of Hadadezer), לָקַ֞ח (took) הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֛ד (David) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (bronze) הַרְבֵּ֥ה (being much) מְאֹֽד׃ס (very).

9  וַיִּשְׁמַ֕ע (And heard) תֹּ֖עִי (Toi) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) חֲמָ֑ת (of Hamath) כִּ֚י (that) הִכָּ֣ה (had) דָוִ֔ד (David) אֵ֖ת (defeated) כָּל־ (all) חֵ֥יל (the army) הֲדַדְעָֽזֶר׃ (of Hadadezer). 10  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) תֹּ֣עִי (Toi) אֶת־ (-) יֽוֹרָם־ (Joram) בְּנ֣וֹ (his son) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ (King) דָּ֠וִד (David) לִשְׁאָל־ (to ask) ל֨וֹ (him) לְשָׁל֜וֹם (of welfare) וּֽלְבָרֲכ֗וֹ (and to bless him), עַל֩ (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נִלְחַ֤ם (he had fought) בַּהֲדַדְעֶ֙זֶר֙ (against Hadadezer) וַיַּכֵּ֔הוּ (and defeated him). כִּי־ (For) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) מִלְחֲמ֥וֹת (of wars) תֹּ֖עִי (with Toi) הָיָ֣ה (had been) הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר (Hadadezer). וּבְיָד֗וֹ (And with him) הָי֛וּ (he brought) כְּלֵֽי־ (articles) כֶ֥סֶף (of silver), וּכְלֵֽי־ (and articles) זָהָ֖ב (of gold), וּכְלֵ֥י (and articles) נְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ (of bronze). 11  גַּם־ (Also) אֹתָ֕ם (these) הִקְדִּ֛ישׁ (dedicated) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֖ד (David) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), עִם־ (along with) הַכֶּ֤סֶף (the silver) וְהַזָּהָב֙ (and the gold) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הִקְדִּ֔ישׁ (he had dedicated) מִכָּל־ (from all) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) כִּבֵּֽשׁ׃ (he had subdued)— 12  מֵאֲרָ֤ם (from Aram), וּמִמּוֹאָב֙ (and from Moab), וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and from the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon), וּמִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (and from the Philistines), וּמֵֽעֲמָלֵ֑ק (and from Amalek), וּמִשְּׁלַ֛ל (and from the plunder) הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר (of Hadadezer) בֶּן־ (son) רְחֹ֖ב (of Rehob), מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) צוֹבָֽה׃ (of Zobah).

13  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And made himself) דָּוִד֙ (David) שֵׁ֔ם (a name) בְּשֻׁב֕וֹ (when he returned) מֵהַכּוֹת֥וֹ (from his striking) אֶת־ (-) אֲרָ֖ם (Aram) בְּגֵיא־ (in the Valley) מֶ֑לַח (of Salt), שְׁמוֹנָ֥ה (eight) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand). 14  וַיָּ֨שֶׂם (And he put) בֶּאֱד֜וֹם (in Edom) נְצִבִ֗ים (garrisons). בְּכָל־ (Throughout all) אֱדוֹם֙ (Edom) שָׂ֣ם (he put) נְצִבִ֔ים (garrisons), וַיְהִ֥י (and became) כָל־ (all) אֱד֖וֹם (Edom) עֲבָדִ֣ים (servants) לְדָוִ֑ד (of David). וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע (And preserved) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֔ד (David) בְּכֹ֖ל (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) הָלָֽךְ׃ (he went).

(1 Chronicles 18:14–17)

15  וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ (And reigned) דָּוִ֖ד (David) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וַיְהִ֣י (and was) דָוִ֗ד (David) עֹשֶׂ֛ה (doing) מִשְׁפָּ֥ט (judgment) וּצְדָקָ֖ה (and justice) לְכָל־ (to all) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (his people).

16  וְיוֹאָ֥ב (And Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֖ה (of Zeruiah) עַל־ (was over) הַצָּבָ֑א (the army);

וִיהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (and Jehoshaphat was) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיל֖וּד (of Ahilud) מַזְכִּֽיר׃ (was recorder);

17  וְצָד֧וֹק (and Zadok) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיט֛וּב (of Ahitub) וַאֲחִימֶ֥לֶךְ (and Ahimelech) בֶּן־ (son) אֶבְיָתָ֖ר (of Abiathar) כֹּהֲנִ֑ים (were priests);

וּשְׂרָיָ֖ה (and Seraiah) סוֹפֵֽר׃ (was the scribe);

18  וּבְנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (and Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada) וְהַכְּרֵתִ֖י (and was over both the Cherethites) וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י (and the Pelethites);

וּבְנֵ֥י (and the sons) דָוִ֖ד (of David) כֹּהֲנִ֥ים (priests) הָיֽוּ׃פ (were).
