The Root of Jesse

1  וְיָצָ֥א (And there will come forth) חֹ֖טֶר (a branch) מִגֵּ֣זַע (from the stump) יִשָׁ֑י (of Jesse),

וְנֵ֖צֶר (and a fresh shoot) מִשָּׁרָשָׁ֥יו (from his roots) יִפְרֶֽה׃ (will bear fruit).

2  וְנָחָ֥ה (And will rest) עָלָ֖יו (upon Him) ר֣וּחַ (the Spirit) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

ר֧וּחַ (the Spirit) חָכְמָ֣ה (of wisdom) וּבִינָ֗ה (and understanding),

ר֤וּחַ (the Spirit) עֵצָה֙ (of counsel) וּגְבוּרָ֔ה (and might),

ר֥וּחַ (the Spirit) דַּ֖עַת (of knowledge) וְיִרְאַ֥ת (and fear) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH);

3  וַהֲרִיח֖וֹ (and His delight is) בְּיִרְאַ֣ת (in the fear) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) לְמַרְאֵ֤ה (and by the sight) עֵינָיו֙ (of His eyes) יִשְׁפּ֔וֹט (will he judge),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) לְמִשְׁמַ֥ע (by the hearing) אָזְנָ֖יו (of his ears) יוֹכִֽיחַ׃ (He will decide).

4  וְשָׁפַ֤ט (And He will judge) בְּצֶ֙דֶק֙ (with righteousness) דַּלִּ֔ים (the lowly),

וְהוֹכִ֥יחַ (and settle disputes) בְּמִישׁ֖וֹר (with straightness) לְעַנְוֵי־ (for the poor) אָ֑רֶץ (of the earth).

וְהִֽכָּה־ (And He will strike) אֶ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) בְּשֵׁ֣בֶט (with the rod) פִּ֔יו (of His mouth),

וּבְר֥וּחַ (and with the breath) שְׂפָתָ֖יו (of His lips) יָמִ֥ית (He will slay) רָשָֽׁע׃ (the wicked).

5  וְהָ֥יָה (And will be) צֶ֖דֶק (righteousness) אֵז֣וֹר (the girdle) מָתְנָ֑יו (of His waist),

וְהָאֱמוּנָ֖ה (and faithfulness) אֵז֥וֹר (the girdle) חֲלָצָֽיו׃ (of His loins).

6  וְגָ֤ר (And will dwell) זְאֵב֙ (the wolf) עִם־ (with) כֶּ֔בֶשׂ (the lamb),

וְנָמֵ֖ר (and the leopard) עִם־ (with) גְּדִ֣י (the young goat) יִרְבָּ֑ץ (will lie down),

וְעֵ֨גֶל (and the calf) וּכְפִ֤יר (and the young lion) וּמְרִיא֙ (and the fatling) יַחְדָּ֔ו (together),

וְנַ֥עַר (and a child) קָטֹ֖ן (little) נֹהֵ֥ג (will lead) בָּֽם׃ (them).

7  וּפָרָ֤ה (And the cow) וָדֹב֙ (and the bear) תִּרְעֶ֔ינָה (will graze);

יַחְדָּ֖ו (together) יִרְבְּצ֣וּ (will lie down) יַלְדֵיהֶ֑ן (their young),

וְאַרְיֵ֖ה (and the lion) כַּבָּקָ֥ר (like the ox) יֹֽאכַל־ (will eat) תֶּֽבֶן׃ (straw).

8  וְשִֽׁעֲשַׁ֥ע (And will play) יוֹנֵ֖ק (the suckling) עַל־ (over) חֻ֣ר (the hole) פָּ֑תֶן (of a cobra),

וְעַל֙ (and over) מְאוּרַ֣ת (the den) צִפְעוֹנִ֔י (of a viper) גָּמ֖וּל (the one being weaned) יָד֥וֹ (his hand) הָדָֽה׃ (will stretch out).

9  לֹֽא־ (Not) יָרֵ֥עוּ (will they do harm) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַשְׁחִ֖יתוּ (will they destroy)

בְּכָל־ (in all) הַ֣ר (of the mountain) קָדְשִׁ֑י (of My holiness),

כִּֽי־ (for) מָלְאָ֣ה (will be full) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the earth) דֵּעָה֙ (of the knowledge) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

כַּמַּ֖יִם (as the waters) לַיָּ֥ם (the sea) מְכַסִּֽים׃פ (are covering).

10  וְהָיָה֙ (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day) הַה֔וּא (that) שֹׁ֣רֶשׁ (that the root) יִשַׁ֗י (of Jesse) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) עֹמֵד֙ (is standing) לְנֵ֣ס (will be as a banner for) עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples). אֵלָ֖יו (Him) גּוֹיִ֣ם (The nations) יִדְרֹ֑שׁוּ (will seek out), וְהָיְתָ֥ה (and will be) מְנֻחָת֖וֹ (His resting place) כָּבֽוֹד׃פ (in glory). 11  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in day) הַה֗וּא (that), יוֹסִ֨יף (will add) אֲדֹנָ֤י׀ (the Lord) שֵׁנִית֙ (a second time) יָד֔וֹ (with His hand) לִקְנ֖וֹת (to recover) אֶת־ (-) שְׁאָ֣ר (the remnant) עַמּ֑וֹ (of His people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יִשָּׁאֵר֩ (will remain) מֵאַשּׁ֨וּר (from Assyria), וּמִמִּצְרַ֜יִם (and from Egypt), וּמִפַּתְר֣וֹס (and from Pathros), וּמִכּ֗וּשׁ (and from Cush), וּמֵעֵילָ֤ם (and from Elam), וּמִשִּׁנְעָר֙ (and from Shinar), וּמֵ֣חֲמָ֔ת (and from Hamath), וּמֵאִיֵּ֖י (and from the islands) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea).

12  וְנָשָׂ֥א (And He will set up) נֵס֙ (a banner) לַגּוֹיִ֔ם (for the nations)

וְאָסַ֖ף (and He will gather) נִדְחֵ֣י (the banished ones) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel),

וּנְפֻצ֤וֹת (and the dispersed ones) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) יְקַבֵּ֔ץ (He will gather together)

מֵאַרְבַּ֖ע (from the four) כַּנְפ֥וֹת (wings) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

13  וְסָ֙רָה֙ (And will be turned aside) קִנְאַ֣ת (the jealousy) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim),

וְצֹרְרֵ֥י (and the adversaries) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) יִכָּרֵ֑תוּ (will be cut off).

אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (Ephraim) לֹֽא־ (not) יְקַנֵּ֣א (will envy) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah),

וִֽיהוּדָ֖ה (and Judah) לֹֽא־ (not) יָצֹ֥ר (will harass) אֶת־ (-) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (Ephraim).

14  וְעָפ֨וּ (And they will fly down) בְכָתֵ֤ף (on the shoulder) פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ (of the Philistines) יָ֔מָּה (westward);

יַחְדָּ֖ו (together) יָבֹ֣זּוּ (they will plunder) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) קֶ֑דֶם (of the east).

אֱד֤וֹם (Upon Edom) וּמוֹאָב֙ (and Moab) מִשְׁל֣וֹח (they will send forth) יָדָ֔ם (their hands),

וּבְנֵ֥י (and the sons) עַמּ֖וֹן (of Ammon) מִשְׁמַעְתָּֽם׃ (will be their subjects).

15  וְהֶחֱרִ֣ים (Will devote to destruction) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֵ֚ת (-)

לְשׁ֣וֹן (the tongue) יָם־ (of the Sea) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt),

וְהֵנִ֥יף (and He will wave) יָד֛וֹ (His hand) עַל־ (over) הַנָּהָ֖ר (the River)

בַּעְיָ֣ם (with the might) רוּח֑וֹ (of His wind)

וְהִכָּ֙הוּ֙ (and will strike it) לְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (into seven) נְחָלִ֔ים (streams),

וְהִדְרִ֖יךְ (for one to tread) בַּנְּעָלִֽים׃ (in sandals).

16  וְהָיְתָ֣ה (And there will be) מְסִלָּ֔ה (a highway) לִשְׁאָ֣ר (for the remnant) עַמּ֔וֹ (of His people)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יִשָּׁאֵ֖ר (remain) מֵֽאַשּׁ֑וּר (from Assyria),

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) הָֽיְתָה֙ (it was) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (for Israel)

בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) עֲלֹת֖וֹ (of his coming up) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).
