Job Affirms His Integrity

1  וַיֹּ֣סֶף (And continued) אִ֭יּוֹב (Job) שְׂאֵ֥ת (to take up) מְשָׁל֗וֹ (his discourse), וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ (and he said),

2  חַי־ (As lives) אֵ֭ל (God)! הֵסִ֣יר (He has turned aside) מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י (my justice),

וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י (and Shaddai) הֵמַ֥ר (has embittered) נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (my soul);

3  כִּֽי־ (that) כָל־ (any) ע֣וֹד (still) נִשְׁמָתִ֣י (of my breath) בִ֑י (is in me),

וְר֖וּחַ (and the breath) אֱל֣וֹהַּ (of God) בְּאַפִּֽי׃ (is in my nostrils),

4  אִם־ (not) תְּדַבֵּ֣רְנָה (will speak) שְׂפָתַ֣י (my lips) עַוְלָ֑ה (wickedness),

וּ֝לְשׁוֹנִ֗י (and my tongue) אִם־ (not) יֶהְגֶּ֥ה (will muse) רְמִיָּֽה׃ (deceit).

5  חָלִ֣ילָה (Far be it) לִּי֮ (from me) אִם־ (that) אַצְדִּ֪יק (I justify) אֶ֫תְכֶ֥ם (you⁺);

עַד־ (until) אֶגְוָ֑ע (I die), לֹא־ (not) אָסִ֖יר (will I turn aside) תֻּמָּתִ֣י (my integrity) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (from me).

6  בְּצִדְקָתִ֣י (My righteousness) הֶ֭חֱזַקְתִּי (I hold fast), וְלֹ֣א (and not) אַרְפֶּ֑הָ (let go).

לֹֽא־ (Not) יֶחֱרַ֥ף (shall reproach me) לְ֝בָבִ֗י (my heart) מִיָּמָֽי׃ (in my days).

The Wicked Man’s Portion

7  יְהִ֣י (May he be) כְ֭רָשָׁע (like the wicked) אֹ֣יְבִ֑י (my enemy),

וּמִתְקוֹמְמִ֥י (and the one rising up against me) כְעַוָּֽל׃ (like the unjust).

8  כִּ֤י (For) מַה־ (what) תִּקְוַ֣ת (is the hope) חָ֭נֵף (of the godless), כִּ֣י (when) יִבְצָ֑ע (he is cut off),

כִּ֤י (when) יֵ֖שֶׁל (takes away) אֱל֣וֹהַּ (God) נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ (his life)?

9  הַֽ֭צַעֲקָתוֹ (His cry) יִשְׁמַ֥ע׀ (will hear) אֵ֑ל (God)

כִּֽי־ (when) תָב֖וֹא (comes) עָלָ֣יו (upon him) צָרָֽה׃ (distress)?

10  אִם־ (Indeed) עַל־ (upon) שַׁדַּ֥י (Shaddai) יִתְעַנָּ֑ג (will he delight himself)?

יִקְרָ֖א (Will he call upon) אֱל֣וֹהַּ (God) בְּכָל־ (at any) עֵֽת׃ (time)?

11  אוֹרֶ֣ה (I will teach) אֶתְכֶ֣ם (you⁺) בְּיַד־ (about the hand) אֵ֑ל (of God);

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that which is) עִם־ (with) שַׁ֝דַּ֗י (Shaddai) לֹ֣א (not) אֲכַחֵֽד׃ (will I hide).

12  הֵן־ (Behold) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺)— כֻּלְּכֶ֣ם (all of you⁺)— חֲזִיתֶ֑ם (you⁺ have seen this),

וְלָמָּה־ (and why) זֶּ֝֗ה (this), הֶ֣בֶל (vanity) תֶּהְבָּֽלוּ׃ (do you⁺ vainly utter)?

13  זֶ֤ה׀ (This is) חֵֽלֶק־ (the portion) אָדָ֖ם (of a man) רָשָׁ֥ע׀ (wicked) עִם־ (with) אֵ֑ל (God),

וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת (and the inheritance) עָ֝רִיצִ֗ים (of the ruthless) מִשַּׁדַּ֥י (which from Shaddai) יִקָּֽחוּ׃ (they received).

14  אִם־ (If) יִרְבּ֣וּ (should increase) בָנָ֣יו (his sons), לְמוֹ־ (it is for) חָ֑רֶב (the sword);

וְ֝צֶאֱצָאָ֗יו (and his offspring) לֹ֣א (not) יִשְׂבְּעוּ־ (shall be satisfied) לָֽחֶם׃ (with bread).

15  שְׂרִידוֹ (His survivor) בַּמָּ֣וֶת (in death) יִקָּבֵ֑רוּ (will be buried),

וְ֝אַלְמְנֹתָ֗יו (and his widows) לֹ֣א (not) תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃ (will lament).

16  אִם־ (Though) יִצְבֹּ֣ר (he heaps up) כֶּעָפָ֣ר (like the dust) כָּ֑סֶף (silver),

וְ֝כַחֹ֗מֶר (and like the clay) יָכִ֥ין (he piles up) מַלְבּֽוּשׁ׃ (clothing),

17  יָ֭כִין (he may pile it up) וְצַדִּ֣יק (and the righteous) יִלְבָּ֑שׁ (will wear it),

וְ֝כֶ֗סֶף (and the silver) נָקִ֥י (the innocent) יַחֲלֹֽק׃ (will divide).

18  בָּנָ֣ה (He builds) כָעָ֣שׁ (like the moth) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house),

וּ֝כְסֻכָּ֗ה (and like a booth) עָשָׂ֥ה (made by) נֹצֵֽר׃ (a watchman).

19  עָשִׁ֣יר (Rich), יִ֭שְׁכַּב (he lies down), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֵאָסֵ֑ף (shall he gather again);

עֵינָ֖יו (his eyes) פָּקַ֣ח (he opens), וְאֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ (and he is not).

20  תַּשִּׂיגֵ֣הוּ (Overwhelm him) כַ֭מַּיִם (like waters) בַּלָּה֑וֹת (terrors),

לַ֝֗יְלָה (in the night) גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ (steals him away) סוּפָֽה׃ (a tempest).

21  יִשָּׂאֵ֣הוּ (Carries him away) קָדִ֣ים (the east wind), וְיֵלַ֑ךְ (and he is gone);

וִֽ֝ישָׂעֲרֵ֗הוּ (and it sweeps him) מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ (from his place).

22  וְיַשְׁלֵ֣ךְ (And it hurls itself) עָ֭לָיו (upon him), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַחְמֹ֑ל (does it spare);

מִ֝יָּד֗וֹ (from its hand) בָּר֥וֹחַ (fleeing) יִבְרָֽח׃ (he flees).

23  יִשְׂפֹּ֣ק (It claps) עָלֵ֣ימוֹ (at him) כַפֵּ֑ימוֹ (its hands)

וְיִשְׁרֹ֥ק (and hisses) עָ֝לָ֗יו (at him) מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ (from his place).
