Yahweh’s Love for Israel
(Genesis 25:19–28; Romans 9:6–29)
1 מַשָּׂ֥א (The burden) דְבַר־ (of the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand) מַלְאָכִֽי׃ (of Malachi).
2 אָהַ֤בְתִּי (I have loved) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH).
וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ say), בַּמָּ֣ה (In what way) אֲהַבְתָּ֑נוּ (have You loved us)
הֲלוֹא־ (Was not) אָ֨ח (a brother)? עֵשָׂ֤ו (Esau) לְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ (to Jacob) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH). וָאֹהַ֖ב (And I have loved) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob),
3 וְאֶת־ (and) עֵשָׂ֖ו (Esau), שָׂנֵ֑אתִי (I have hated) וָאָשִׂ֤ים (and I set) אֶת־ (-) הָרָיו֙ (his mountains) שְׁמָמָ֔ה (as a desolation) וְאֶת־ (and) נַחֲלָת֖וֹ (his inheritance) לְתַנּ֥וֹת (for the jackals) מִדְבָּֽר׃ (of the desert).
4 כִּֽי־ (If) תֹאמַ֨ר (should say), אֱד֜וֹם (Edom) רֻשַּׁ֗שְׁנוּ (We have been beaten down), וְנָשׁוּב֙ (and we will return) וְנִבְנֶ֣ה (and will build) חֳרָב֔וֹת (the ruins); כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), הֵ֥מָּה (They) יִבְנ֖וּ (may build), וַאֲנִ֣י (and I) אֶהֱר֑וֹס (I will tear down); וְקָרְא֤וּ (and they will call the name) לָהֶם֙ (to them) גְּב֣וּל (the Territory) רִשְׁעָ֔ה (of Wickedness), וְהָעָ֛ם (and The people) אֲשֶׁר־ (with whom) זָעַ֥ם (will be angry) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).
5 וְעֵינֵיכֶ֖ם (And your⁺ eyes) תִּרְאֶ֑ינָה (will see), וְאַתֶּ֤ם (and you⁺) תֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (will say), יִגְדַּ֣ל (Great is) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מֵעַ֖ל (from) לִגְב֥וּל (beyond the border) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
The Polluted Offerings
6 בֵּ֛ן (A son) יְכַבֵּ֥ד (honors) אָ֖ב (his father), וְעֶ֣בֶד (and a servant) אֲדֹנָ֑יו (his master). וְאִם־ (And if) אָ֣ב (the Father), אָ֣נִי (I am) אַיֵּ֣ה (where) כְבוֹדִ֡י (is My honor)? וְאִם־ (And if) אֲדוֹנִ֣ים (the Master), אָנִי֩ (I am) אַיֵּ֨ה (where) מוֹרָאִ֜י (is the fear due Me)? אָמַ֣ר׀ (Says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֗וֹת (Hosts) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (O priests), בּוֹזֵ֣י (despising) שְׁמִ֔י (My name).
וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם (And you⁺ say), בַּמֶּ֥ה (In what) בָזִ֖ינוּ (have we despised) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ (Your name)?
7 מַגִּישִׁ֤ים (By bringing near) עַֽל־ (upon) מִזְבְּחִי֙ (My altar); לֶ֣חֶם (food) מְגֹאָ֔ל (that is defiled)
וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ say), בַּמֶּ֣ה (In what way) גֵֽאַלְנ֑וּךָ (have we defiled You)
בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֕ם (By your⁺ saying that), שֻׁלְחַ֥ן (the table) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) נִבְזֶ֥ה (is despised) הֽוּא׃ (it is).
8 וְכִֽי־ (For when) תַגִּשׁ֨וּן (you⁺ offer) עִוֵּ֤ר (the blind) לִזְבֹּ֙חַ֙ (as a sacrifice), אֵ֣ין (is it not) רָ֔ע (evil)? וְכִ֥י (And when) תַגִּ֛ישׁוּ (you⁺ offer) פִּסֵּ֥חַ (the lame) וְחֹלֶ֖ה (and sick), אֵ֣ין (is it not) רָ֑ע (evil)? הַקְרִיבֵ֨הוּ (Offer it) נָ֜א (now) לְפֶחָתֶ֗ךָ (to your governor); הֲיִּרְצְךָ֙ (would he be pleased with you) א֚וֹ (or) הֲיִשָּׂ֣א (would he lift up) פָנֶ֔יךָ (your face)? אָמַ֖ר (Says) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).
9 וְעַתָּ֛ה (And now), חַלּוּ־ (beseech) נָ֥א (please), פְנֵי־ (the face)? אֵ֖ל (Of God) וִֽיחָנֵ֑נוּ (and He will be gracious to us) מִיֶּדְכֶם֙ (from your⁺ hand), הָ֣יְתָה (has come) זֹּ֔את (this) הֲיִשָּׂ֤א (will he lift up) מִכֶּם֙ (your⁺); פָּנִ֔ים (faces) אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).
10 מִ֤י (Who) גַם־ (even) בָּכֶם֙ (among you⁺) וְיִסְגֹּ֣ר (will shut) דְּלָתַ֔יִם (the doors) וְלֹֽא־ (so that not) תָאִ֥ירוּ (you⁺ could kindle fire) מִזְבְּחִ֖י (on My altar) חִנָּ֑ם (in vain). אֵֽין־ (There is not) לִ֨י (for Me) חֵ֜פֶץ (delight) בָּכֶ֗ם (in you⁺) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), וּמִנְחָ֖ה (And an offering) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶרְצֶ֥ה (I will accept) מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃ (from your⁺ hand).
11 כִּ֣י (For) מִמִּזְרַח־ (from the rising) שֶׁ֜מֶשׁ (of the sun) וְעַד־ (and to) מְבוֹא֗וֹ (its going down) גָּד֤וֹל (is great) שְׁמִי֙ (My name) בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the nations); וּבְכָל־ (and in every) מָק֗וֹם (place) מֻקְטָ֥ר (incense) מֻגָּ֛שׁ (shall be offered) לִשְׁמִ֖י (to My name), וּמִנְחָ֣ה (and offering); טְהוֹרָ֑ה (a pure) כִּֽי־ (Indeed) גָד֤וֹל (will be great) שְׁמִי֙ (My name) בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the nations), אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).
12 וְאַתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺) מְחַלְּלִ֣ים (profane) אוֹת֑וֹ (it) בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֗ם (by your⁺ saying), שֻׁלְחַ֤ן (The table) אֲדֹנָי֙ (of the Lord) מְגֹאָ֣ל (is defiled); ה֔וּא (it) וְנִיב֖וֹ (and its fruit) נִבְזֶ֥ה (Is contemptible). אָכְלֽוֹ׃ (Its food).
13 וַאֲמַרְתֶּם֩ (And You⁺ also say) הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), מַתְּלָאָ֜ה (a weariness) וְהִפַּחְתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ sneer at) אוֹת֗וֹ (it) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts);
וַהֲבֵאתֶ֣ם (And you⁺ bring) גָּז֗וּל (the stolen), וְאֶת־ (and) הַפִּסֵּ֙חַ֙ (the lame), וְאֶת־ (and) הַ֣חוֹלֶ֔ה (the sick); וַהֲבֵאתֶ֖ם (and you⁺ bring) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּנְחָ֑ה (the offering)! הַאֶרְצֶ֥ה (Should I accept) אוֹתָ֛הּ (this) מִיֶּדְכֶ֖ם (from your⁺ hands)? אָמַ֥ר (Says) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).
14 וְאָר֣וּר (And cursed is) נוֹכֵ֗ל (the one plotting), וְיֵ֤שׁ (and is) בְּעֶדְרוֹ֙ (in his flock) זָכָ֔ר (a male), וְנֹדֵ֛ר (and vowing it), וְזֹבֵ֥חַ (and sacrificing) מָשְׁחָ֖ת (what is blemished); לַֽאדֹנָ֑י (to the Lord) כִּי֩ (For) מֶ֨לֶךְ (a King), גָּד֜וֹל (great) אָ֗נִי (I am) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), וּשְׁמִ֖י (And My name) נוֹרָ֥א (is feared) בַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (among the nations).
