Boaz Redeems Ruth

1  וּבֹ֨עַז (And Boaz) עָלָ֣ה (went up) הַשַּׁעַר֮ (to the gate) וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב (and he sat) שָׁם֒ (there), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), הַגֹּאֵ֤ל (the kinsman-redeemer) עֹבֵר֙ (was passing by), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of whom) דִּבֶּר־ (had spoken) בֹּ֔עַז (Boaz). וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (And he said), ס֥וּרָה (Turn aside), שְׁבָה־ (sit) פֹּ֖ה (here) פְּלֹנִ֣י (such a one), אַלְמֹנִ֑י (such a one). וַיָּ֖סַר (And he turned aside) וַיֵּשֵֽׁב׃ (and sat).

2  וַיִּקַּ֞ח (And he took) עֲשָׂרָ֧ה (ten) אֲנָשִׁ֛ים (men) מִזִּקְנֵ֥י (from the elders) הָעִ֖יר (of the city) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said), שְׁבוּ־ (Sit) פֹ֑ה (here). וַיֵּשֵֽׁבוּ׃ (And they sat).

3  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said) לַגֹּאֵ֔ל (to the kinsman-redeemer), חֶלְקַת֙ (The piece) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (of the field) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) לְאָחִ֖ינוּ (to our brother) לֶאֱלִימֶ֑לֶךְ (to Elimelech) מָכְרָ֣ה (is selling) נָעֳמִ֔י (Naomi), הַשָּׁ֖בָה (the woman returning) מִשְּׂדֵ֥ה (from the fields) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab), 4  וַאֲנִ֨י (and I) אָמַ֜רְתִּי (said) אֶגְלֶ֧ה (I will uncover) אָזְנְךָ֣ (your ear), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), קְ֠נֵה (Buy it) נֶ֥גֶד (before) הַֽיֹּשְׁבִים֮ (those sitting here) וְנֶ֣גֶד (and before) זִקְנֵ֣י (the elders) עַמִּי֒ (of my people). אִם־ (If) תִּגְאַל֙ (you will redeem it) גְּאָ֔ל (redeem it). וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֨א (not) יִגְאַ֜ל (he will redeem it), הַגִּ֣ידָה (tell) לִּ֗י (me), וְאֵדַע (that I may know); כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֤ין (there is none) זוּלָֽתְךָ֙ (besides you) לִגְא֔וֹל (to redeem it), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I am) אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ (after you).

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), אָנֹכִ֥י (I) אֶגְאָֽל׃ (will redeem it).

5  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) בֹּ֔עַז (Boaz), בְּיוֹם־ (In the day) קְנוֹתְךָ֥ (of your buying) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (the field) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) נָעֳמִ֑י (of Naomi) וּ֠מֵאֵת (and from) ר֣וּת (Ruth) הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֤ה (the Moabitess), אֵֽשֶׁת־ (the wife) הַמֵּת֙ (of the dead), קָנִיתִי (you must buy it) לְהָקִ֥ים (to raise up) שֵׁם־ (the name) הַמֵּ֖ת (of the dead) עַל־ (on) נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ (his inheritance).

6  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) הַגֹּאֵ֗ל (the kinsman-redeemer), לֹ֤א (Not) אוּכַל֙ (I am able) לִגְאוֹל (to redeem it) לִ֔י (for myself), פֶּן־ (lest) אַשְׁחִ֖ית (I damage) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָתִ֑י (my own inheritance). גְּאַל־ (Redeem it) לְךָ֤ (for yourself). אַתָּה֙ (You have) אֶת־ (-) גְּאֻלָּתִ֔י (my redemption), כִּ֥י (for) לֹא־ (not) אוּכַ֖ל (I am able) לִגְאֹֽל׃ (to redeem it).

7  וְזֹאת֩ (And this) לְפָנִ֨ים (was formerly) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (in Israel) עַל־ (concerning) הַגְּאוּלָּ֤ה (the redemption) וְעַל־ (and concerning) הַתְּמוּרָה֙ (the exchange), לְקַיֵּ֣ם (to confirm) כָּל־ (every) דָּבָ֔ר (matter), שָׁלַ֥ף (would remove) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) נַעֲל֖וֹ (his sandal) וְנָתַ֣ן (and give it) לְרֵעֵ֑הוּ (to his companion), וְזֹ֥את (and this was) הַתְּעוּדָ֖ה (the testimony) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel). 8  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) הַגֹּאֵ֛ל (the kinsman-redeemer) לְבֹ֖עַז (to Boaz), קְנֵה־ (Buy it) לָ֑ךְ (for yourself). וַיִּשְׁלֹ֖ף (And he removed) נַעֲלֽוֹ׃ (his sandal).

9  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) בֹּ֨עַז (Boaz) לַזְּקֵנִ֜ים (to the elders) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֗ם (the people), עֵדִ֤ים (Witnesses) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺ are) הַיּ֔וֹם (this day) כִּ֤י (that) קָנִ֙יתִי֙ (I have bought) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֶֽאֱלִימֶ֔לֶךְ (belonged to Elimelech), וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לְכִלְי֖וֹן (belonged to Chilion) וּמַחְל֑וֹן (and Mahlon), מִיַּ֖ד (from the hand) נָעֳמִֽי׃ (of Naomi). 10  וְגַ֣ם (And also) אֶת־ (-) ר֣וּת (Ruth) הַמֹּאֲבִיָּה֩ (the Moabitess), אֵ֨שֶׁת (the widow) מַחְל֜וֹן (of Mahlon), קָנִ֧יתִי (I have acquired) לִ֣י (for myself) לְאִשָּׁ֗ה (for a wife), לְהָקִ֤ים (to raise up) שֵׁם־ (the name) הַמֵּת֙ (of the dead) עַל־ (on) נַ֣חֲלָת֔וֹ (his inheritance), וְלֹא־ (and not) יִכָּרֵ֧ת (will be cut off) שֵׁם־ (the name) הַמֵּ֛ת (of the dead) מֵעִ֥ם (from among) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers), וּמִשַּׁ֣עַר (and from at the gate) מְקוֹמ֑וֹ (of his place); עֵדִ֥ים (witnesses) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ are) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (this day).

11  וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֧ם (the people) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בַּשַּׁ֛עַר (at the gate), וְהַזְּקֵנִ֖ים (and the elders), עֵדִ֑ים (Witnesses)! יִתֵּן֩ (May make) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֶֽת־ (-) הָאִשָּׁ֜ה (the woman) הַבָּאָ֣ה (the one coming) אֶל־ (to) בֵּיתֶ֗ךָ (your house) כְּרָחֵ֤ל׀ (like Rachel) וּכְלֵאָה֙ (and like Leah), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) בָּנ֤וּ (built), שְׁתֵּיהֶם֙ (the two), אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); וַעֲשֵׂה־ (and you do) חַ֣יִל (virtuously) בְּאֶפְרָ֔תָה (in Ephrathah), וּקְרָא־ (and proclaim) שֵׁ֖ם (the name) בְּבֵ֥ית (in Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem). 12  וִיהִ֤י (And may be) בֵֽיתְךָ֙ (your house) כְּבֵ֣ית (like the house) פֶּ֔רֶץ (of Perez), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) יָלְדָ֥ה (bore) תָמָ֖ר (Tamar) לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (to Judah), מִן־ (from) הַזֶּ֗רַע (the seed) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִתֵּ֤ן (does give) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְךָ֔ (to you) מִן־ (from) הַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ה (the young woman) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).

Boaz Marries Ruth

13  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) בֹּ֤עַז (Boaz) אֶת־ (-) רוּת֙ (Ruth), וַתְּהִי־ (and she became) ל֣וֹ (to him) לְאִשָּׁ֔ה (for a wife), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he went in) אֵלֶ֑יהָ (to her). וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And gave) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) לָ֛הּ (to her) הֵרָי֖וֹן (conception), וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and she bore) בֵּֽן׃ (a son).

14  וַתֹּאמַ֤רְנָה (And said) הַנָּשִׁים֙ (the women) אֶֽל־ (to) נָעֳמִ֔י (Naomi), בָּר֣וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), אֲ֠שֶׁר (who) לֹ֣א (not) הִשְׁבִּ֥ית (has let cease) לָ֛ךְ (to you) גֹּאֵ֖ל (a kinsman-redeemer) הַיּ֑וֹם (this day), וְיִקָּרֵ֥א (and may be proclaimed) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel). 15  וְהָ֤יָה (And may he be) לָךְ֙ (to you) לְמֵשִׁ֣יב (a restorer) נֶ֔פֶשׁ (of life), וּלְכַלְכֵּ֖ל (and a nourisher) אֶת־ (-) שֵׂיבָתֵ֑ךְ (of your old age). כִּ֣י (For) כַלָּתֵ֤ךְ (your daughter-in-law) אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (who) אֲהֵבַ֙תֶךְ֙ (loves you)— יְלָדַ֔תּוּ (has borne him)— אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הִיא֙ (is) ט֣וֹבָה (better) לָ֔ךְ (to you) מִשִּׁבְעָ֖ה (than seven) בָּנִֽים׃ (sons).

16  וַתִּקַּ֨ח (And took) נָעֳמִ֤י (Naomi) אֶת־ (-) הַיֶּ֙לֶד֙ (the child) וַתְּשִׁתֵ֣הוּ (and laid him) בְחֵיקָ֔הּ (in her bosom), וַתְּהִי־ (and she became) ל֖וֹ (to him) לְאֹמֶֽנֶת׃ (a nurse). 17  וַתִּקְרֶאנָה֩ (And called) ל֨וֹ (for him) הַשְּׁכֵנ֥וֹת (the neighbor women) שֵׁם֙ (a name), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יֻלַּד־ (Has been born) בֵּ֖ן (a son) לְנָעֳמִ֑י (to Naomi). וַתִּקְרֶ֤אנָֽה (And they called) שְׁמוֹ֙ (his name) עוֹבֵ֔ד (Obed). ה֥וּא (He is) אֲבִי־ (the father) יִשַׁ֖י (of Jesse), אֲבִ֥י (the father) דָוִֽד׃פ (of David).

21  וְשַׂלְמוֹן֙ (and Salmon) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) בֹּ֔עַז (Boaz),

וּבֹ֖עַז (and Boaz) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עוֹבֵֽד׃ (Obed),

22  וְעֹבֵד֙ (and Obed) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יִשָׁ֔י (Jesse),

וְיִשַׁ֖י (and Jesse) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִֽד׃ (David).
