At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter
In the context of the Gospel of John, this scene takes place during the arrest and trial of Jesus. The "servant girl" is likely a young female servant responsible for managing access to the courtyard of the high priest. This setting is significant as it highlights the vulnerability and fear of Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, in a hostile environment. The presence of a servant girl questioning Peter underscores the unexpected nature of the challenge to his loyalty, as it comes from someone of low social status, not a figure of authority.

Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?
The question posed by the servant girl is direct and confrontational. It implies that Peter's association with Jesus is known or suspected, reflecting the tension and danger for Jesus' followers at this time. The use of "this man" rather than Jesus' name may indicate a dismissive or derogatory attitude, common among those who opposed Jesus. This moment fulfills Jesus' earlier prophecy that Peter would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed (John 13:38), highlighting the theme of human weakness and fear.

“I am not,” he answered.
Peter's denial is significant as it marks a moment of personal failure and fear. Despite his earlier bold declarations of loyalty (John 13:37), Peter succumbs to fear of association with Jesus. This denial is a pivotal moment in Peter's spiritual journey, illustrating the struggle between faith and fear. It also serves as a reminder of the grace and forgiveness available through Christ, as Peter is later restored and becomes a foundational leader in the early Church (John 21:15-19). This denial contrasts with Jesus' unwavering commitment to His mission, even in the face of suffering and death.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Peter
One of Jesus' closest disciples, known for his boldness and later leadership in the early church. Here, he denies knowing Jesus.

2. Servant Girl
A young female servant responsible for watching the door, who questions Peter about his association with Jesus.

3. The Courtyard
The setting of this event, likely part of the high priest's residence, where Jesus was taken after His arrest.

4. Jesus

5. Denial of Peter
A significant event where Peter denies his association with Jesus, fulfilling Jesus' earlier prediction.
Teaching Points
The Weakness of Human Resolve
Despite Peter's earlier declarations of loyalty, he succumbs to fear. This reminds us of our own vulnerabilities and the need for divine strength.

The Pressure of Public Opinion
Peter's denial occurs in a public setting, illustrating how societal pressures can lead us to compromise our faith.

The Importance of Repentance
Peter's account does not end with denial; he later repents and is restored. This highlights the power of repentance and forgiveness.

The Role of Prophecy
Jesus' prediction of Peter's denial underscores the reliability of His words and the fulfillment of prophecy.

Courage in Witnessing
Peter's initial failure contrasts with his later boldness in Acts, encouraging us to seek the Holy Spirit's empowerment for witnessing.(17) On Peter's denials, comp. Notes on Matthew 26:69-75, and see in this Gospel John 13:38.

Art not thou also one of this man's disciples?--i.e., "Thou as well as thy friend, whom I know." There is no charge brought against him. The words are apparently simply words of recognition, or as furnishing a reason for admitting him with his friend, but Peter is conscious that he had attempted to kill, and had succeeded in wounding, one of the high priest's servants. He therefore dreads this recognition.
