Acts 21
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1And when having drawn away from them, we began sailing, and having run a direct course, we came unto Cos, then next unto Rhodes and from there unto Patara. 2And having found a ship passing over unto Phoenicia, having gone on board, we set sail. 3And having sighted Cyprus, and having left it on the left side, we sailed unto Syria and landed at Tyre. For there the ship was unloading its cargo. 4Then having sought out the disciples, we remained there seven days; who told Paul through the Spirit not to go up unto Jerusalem. 5And when it happened that we completed the days, having gone out, we journeyed, all accompanying us with wives and children until the outside of the city. And having bowed the knees upon the shore, having prayed, 6Having said farewell to one another. Then we went up into the ship; and they returned unto their own.

7And we, having completed the voyage from Tyre, arrived at Ptolemais, and having greeted the brothers, stayed one day with them.

8And on the next day, having gone out, we came unto Caesarea; and having entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, being from out of the seven, we stayed with him. 9And with this man there were four daughters, virgins, prophesying. 10And staying on many days, a certain one came down from Judea, a prophet named Agabus; 11And having come to us and having taken the belt of Paul, and having bound his own feet and hands, he said, This says the Holy Spirit, The man of whom is this belt, thusly the Jews will bind in Jerusalem and will hand him over into the hands of the ethnicities. 12And when we heard these things, both we and those of that place entreated him not to go up unto Jerusalem. 13Then Paul answered, What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I have readiness to not only be bound but rather to also die at Jerusalem for (for the sake of) the name of the Lord Jesus. 14And he not being persuaded, we were silent having said, The will of the Lord be done.

15And after these days, having prepared our bags for the journey, we went up unto Jerusalem. 16And also [some] of the disciples from Caesarea went with us, bringing one with whom we should lodge, a certain Mnason, a Cypriot, an early (old, original, from the beginning) disciple.

17And we having arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers gladly received us. 18And on the next day, Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders arrived. 19And having greeted them, he explained one by one each of the things God had done among the ethnicities through his ministry (diakonias). 20And those having heard, glorified God. And they said to him, You see, brother, how many myriads there are among the Jews having believed and all are zealous ones for the law. 21And they have been informed (instructed orally or by word of mouth) concerning you that you teach apostasy from Moses to all those Jews among the ethnicities, telling them not to circumcise the children nor to walk in the customs. 22What is it then? Certainly they will hear that you have come. 23This then do you that we say to you. We have four men that have a vow upon them. 24Take these, be purified with them, and spend upon them, so that they will shave the head; and all will know that of which they have been informed about you is nothing, but rather that you yourself walk orderly (walk in line/rank/cadence) also, keeping (observing, guarding) the law. 25And concerning those having believed of the ethnicities, we wrote, having adjudged them to keep from the things offered to idols, and blood, and what is strangled, and fornication (sexual immorality). 26Then Paul, having taken the men on the next day with them, and having been purified, entered into the temple, announcing the fulfillment of the days of purification until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them.

27And when seven days were about to be completed, Jews from Asia having seen him in the temple stirred up all the crowd and laid hands upon him, 28Crying out (shouting), Men, Israelites, help! This is the man who is teaching all everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place; and still also he brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place. 29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple. 30And the whole city was moved (excited, stirred up) and there was a riotous gathering (mob, running together) of the people. And having laid hold of Paul, they dragged him outside the temple and the doors were directly shut. 31And while they were seeking to kill him, there came a report to the commander (military leader of a thousand) of the cohort (tenth part of a legion) that all of Jerusalem was in an uproar; 32Who at once, having taken with him soldiers and centurions (captain of a hundred), ran down upon them. And having seen the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33Then the commander having drawn near, laid hold upon him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains (bonds), and inquired who he might be and what it is he had been doing. 34And some were calling out one thing and others a different thing in the crowd. And he not being able to certainly know on account of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks. 35And when he came upon the stairs, it happened that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence (force) of the crowd. 36For the multitude of the people followed crying out (shouting), Away with him.

37And being about to be brought into the barracks, Paul says to the commander, Is it permitted to me to say something to you? And he said, Do you know Greek (the Greek language)? 38You then are not the Egyptian who before these days, having led a revolt and having led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the assassins? 39And Paul said, I am a Jewish man of Tarsus, a citizen of no insignificant city of Cilicia. I implore (beg, request) you, allow me to speak to the people. 40And he having allowed him, Paul standing upon the stairs waved his hand to the people; and a great silence having taken place, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language (dialekto like dialect), saying,
