When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.1Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick and about to die.2And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to come and heal his servant.3And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
They came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is worthy to have You grant this,4And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”5For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.6Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.7Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes; and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”8For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”9When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
And when the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.10And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.11And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
Then He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!”14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.15And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”16And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.17And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.18And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”19And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’ ”20When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
At that very hour Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.21And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
So He replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.22Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”23And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
After John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?24And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.25But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.26But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’27This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”28For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
All the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. For they had received the baptism of John.29And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
“To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like?31And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’32They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’34The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”35But wisdom is justified of all her children.
Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.36And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.37And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.38And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a sinner!”39Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he said.40And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
“Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.41There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
When they were unable to repay him, he forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”42And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
“I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.43Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.44And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived.45Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.46My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
Therefore I tell you, because her many sins have been forgiven, she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”47Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”48And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”49And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”50And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
