David spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul. | 1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. |
He said: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, | 2He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. |
my God, my rock where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, you save me from violence. | 3My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! |
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. | 4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. | 5The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 6The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. |
I called to the LORD in my distress; I called to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help reached his ears. | 7In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because he burned with anger. | 8The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. | 9Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet. | 10He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. | 11He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness a canopy around him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
From the radiance of his presence, blazing coals were ignited. | 13From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard. | 14The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. |
He shot arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. |
The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. | 16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. |
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. | 17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. | 20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. | 21The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness. | 22For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes. | 23For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
I was blameless before him and kept myself from my iniquity. | 24I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. |
So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. | 25The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
With the faithful you prove yourself faithful, with the blameless you prove yourself blameless, | 26You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
with the pure you prove yourself pure; but with the crooked you prove yourself shrewd. | 27You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
You rescue an oppressed people, but your eyes are set against the proud--you humble them. | 28You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. |
LORD, you are my lamp; the LORD illuminates my darkness. | 29Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. |
With you I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall. | 30Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
God--his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. | 31The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock? Only our God. | 32Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
God is my strong refuge; he makes my way perfect. | 33The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. | 34He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You have given me the shield of your salvation; your help exalts me. | 36You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. | 37You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. | 38I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet. | 39I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. |
You have clothed me with strength for battle; you subdue my adversaries beneath me. | 40You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me. | 41You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They look, but there is no one to save them--they look to the LORD, but he does not answer them. | 42They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets. | 43I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. |
You have freed me from the feuds among my people; you have preserved me as head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. | 44You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
Foreigners submit to me cringing; as soon as they hear, they obey me. | 45Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. |
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. | 46Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
The LORD lives--blessed be my rock! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted. | 47The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
God--he grants me vengeance and casts down peoples under me. | 48The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men. | 49He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises about your name. | 50So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. |
He is a tower of salvation for his king; he shows loyalty to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever. | 51He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" |
