David spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul. | 1David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. |
He said: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, | 2He sang: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; |
my God, my rock where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, you save me from violence. | 3my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. |
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. | 4I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. |
For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. | 5“The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me. |
The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 6The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. |
I called to the LORD in my distress; I called to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help reached his ears. | 7But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears. |
Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because he burned with anger. | 8“Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger. |
Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. | 9Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. |
He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet. | 10He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. |
He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. | 11Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness a canopy around him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds. |
From the radiance of his presence, blazing coals were ignited. | 13A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard. | 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. |
He shot arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused. |
The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. | 16Then at the command of the LORD, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. |
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. | 17“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 19They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me. |
He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. | 20He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. |
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. | 21The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness. | 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. |
Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes. | 23I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. |
I was blameless before him and kept myself from my iniquity. | 24I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. |
So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. | 25The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. |
With the faithful you prove yourself faithful, with the blameless you prove yourself blameless, | 26“To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. |
with the pure you prove yourself pure; but with the crooked you prove yourself shrewd. | 27To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. |
You rescue an oppressed people, but your eyes are set against the proud--you humble them. | 28You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them. |
LORD, you are my lamp; the LORD illuminates my darkness. | 29O LORD, you are my lamp. The LORD lights up my darkness. |
With you I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall. | 30In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. |
God--his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. | 31“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. |
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock? Only our God. | 32For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? |
God is my strong refuge; he makes my way perfect. | 33God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect. |
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. | 34He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. |
He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 35He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. |
You have given me the shield of your salvation; your help exalts me. | 36You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great. |
You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. | 37You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. |
I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. | 38“I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered. |
I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet. | 39I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet. |
You have clothed me with strength for battle; you subdue my adversaries beneath me. | 40You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. |
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me. | 41You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. |
They look, but there is no one to save them--they look to the LORD, but he does not answer them. | 42They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer. |
I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets. | 43I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt. |
You have freed me from the feuds among my people; you have preserved me as head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. | 44“You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. |
Foreigners submit to me cringing; as soon as they hear, they obey me. | 45Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit. |
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. | 46They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. |
The LORD lives--blessed be my rock! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted. | 47“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! |
God--he grants me vengeance and casts down peoples under me. | 48He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me |
He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men. | 49and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. |
Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises about your name. | 50For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. |
He is a tower of salvation for his king; he shows loyalty to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever. | 51You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.” |
