1As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

1Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."

2Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say."

3The high priests kept accusing him of many things.

3The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly.

4So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"

4Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!"

5But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished.

5But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.

6At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.

6Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

7Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion.

7The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.

8So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.

8The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"

9Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"

10because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy.

10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

11But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.

12So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call 'the King of the Jews'?"

12Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

13"Crucify him!" they shouted back.

13They shouted back, "Crucify Him!"

14"Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"

14But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"

15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.

15Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

16The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard.

16The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort.

17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head.

17They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;

18They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"

18and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

19They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him.

19They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him.

20When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.

20After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

21They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.

21They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross.

22They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place.

22Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it.

24Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get.

24And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.

25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

26The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."

26The inscription of the charge against Him read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

27They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left.

28	28And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors."

29Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—

29Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

30save yourself and come down from the cross!"

30save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"

31In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!

31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself.

32Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.

32"Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")

34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

35When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"

35When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."

36So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"

36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down."

37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.

38The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.

38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"

39When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

40Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome.

40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome.

41They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.

41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

42It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,

42When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

44Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.

44Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.

45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.

45And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
