Then Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
where he was being tempted by the devil for 40 days. During that time he ate nothing at all, and when they were over he became hungry.2where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was famished.
The devil told him, "Since you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread."3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.'" 4Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone.'"
The devil also took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. 5Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world.
He told Jesus, "I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 6And he said to him, "To you I will grant this whole realm--and the glory that goes along with it, for it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.
So if you will worship me, all this will be yours."7So then, if you will worship me, all this will be yours."
But Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" 8Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
The devil also took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 9Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you to watch over you carefully.10for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,'
With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'" 11and 'with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "It has been said, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'" 12Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"
After the devil had finished tempting Jesus in every possible way, he left him until another time.13So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time.
Then Jesus returned to Galilee by the power of the Spirit. Meanwhile, the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country. 14Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the surrounding countryside.
He began to teach in their synagogues and was continuously receiving praise from everyone.15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by all.
Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been raised. As was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. When he stood up to read, 16Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free,18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
and to announce the year of the Lord's favor." 19to proclaim the year of the Lord' s favor."
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. While the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him, 20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you've heard it read aloud." 21Then he began to tell them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read."
All the people began to speak well of him and to wonder at the gracious words that flowed from his mouth. They said, "This is Joseph's son, isn't it?"22All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
So he told them, "You will probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, heal yourself! Do everything here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.'"23Jesus said to them, "No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself!' and say, 'What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.'"
He added, "I tell all of you with certainty, a prophet is not accepted in his hometown. 24And he added, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
I'm telling you the truth—there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when it didn't rain for three years and six months and there was a severe famine everywhere in the land. 25But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land.
Yet Elijah wasn't sent to a single one of those widows except to one at Zarephath in Sidon. 26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.
There were also many lepers in Israel in the prophet Elisha's time, yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
All the people in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. 28When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage.
They got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw him off. 29They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.
But he walked right through the middle of them and went away.30But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.
Then Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and began teaching the people on Sabbath days.31So he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.
They were utterly amazed at what he taught, because his message was spoken with authority.32They were amazed at his teaching, because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue was a man who had a demon. He screamed with a loud voice, 33Now in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
"Oh, no! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"34"Ha! Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God."
But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he said, "and come out of him!" At this, the demon threw the man down in the middle of the synagogue and came out of him without hurting him.35But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!" Then, after the demon threw the man down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.
Overwhelmed with amazement, they all kept saying to one another, "What kind of statement is this?—because with authority and power he gives orders to unclean spirits, and they come out!" 36They were all amazed and began to say to one another, "What's happening here? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"
So news about him spread to every place in the surrounding region.37So the news about him spread into all areas of the region.
Then Jesus got up to leave the synagogue and went into Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, so they asked Jesus about her. 38After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
He bent over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began serving them. 39So he stood over her, commanded the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them.
When the sun was setting, everyone who had any friends suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and began healing them. 40As the sun was setting, all those who had any relatives sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He placed his hands on every one of them and healed them.
Even demons came out of many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus rebuked them and ordered them not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. 41Demons also came out of many, crying out, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
At daybreak he left and went to a deserted place, while the crowds kept looking for him. When they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 42The next morning Jesus departed and went to a deserted place. Yet the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.
But he told them, "I have to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God in other cities, because I was sent to do that also." 43But Jesus said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do."
So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee. 44So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
