Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.
They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king."2And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king."
So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He replied, "You say so."3So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied.
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no basis for an accusation against this man."4Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."
But they persisted in saying, "He incites the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!" 5But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here."
Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.
When he learned that he was from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who also happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some miraculous sign.8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.
So Herod questioned him at considerable length; Jesus gave him no answer.9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.
The chief priests and the experts in the law were there, vehemently accusing him.10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.
Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.
That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other, for prior to this they had been enemies. 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends--before this they had been enemies.
Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,
and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. When I examined him before you, I did not find this man guilty of anything you accused him of doing.14and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, he has done nothing deserving death.15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
I will therefore have him flogged and release him." 16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him."

But they all shouted out together, "Take this man away! Release Barabbas for us!"18But the whole crowd shouted, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!"
(This was a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.)19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
Pilate addressed them once again because he wanted to release Jesus.20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.
But they kept on shouting, "Crucify, crucify him!"21But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
A third time he said to them, "Why? What wrong has he done? I have found him guilty of no crime deserving death. I will therefore flog him and release him."22For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him."
But they were insistent, demanding with loud shouts that he be crucified. And their shouts prevailed.23But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.
So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.24So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
He released the man they asked for, who had been thrown in prison for insurrection and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
As they led him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country. They placed the cross on his back and made him carry it behind Jesus.26As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
A great number of the people followed him, among them women who were mourning and wailing for him.27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.
But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.
For this is certain: The days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never nursed!'29For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!'
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'30Then "'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"'
For if such things are done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?" 31For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
Two other criminals were also led away to be executed with him.32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.
So when they came to the place that is called "The Skull," they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals--one on his right, the other on his left.
[But Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing."] Then they threw dice to divide his clothes.34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The people also stood there watching, but the rulers ridiculed him, saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!"35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is God's Messiah, the Chosen One."
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine,36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar
and saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."
There was also an inscription over him, "This is the king of the Jews." 38There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
One of the criminals who was hanging there railed at him, saying, "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!"
But the other rebuked him, saying, "Don't you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?
And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom."42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
And Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." 43Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body.
